View Full Version : LX3 flash
gianbautista 05-20-2009, 09:27 AM Hi Guys!
I'm getting my LX3 this weekend! I'd just like to ask what are the possible external flashes what will work with it. I saw a Leica flash for the D-LUX4. I'm expecting it to be expensive though:(
Is there a cheaper unit that i can use? What do you use?
TIA!
Gian
David Tong 05-20-2009, 09:35 AM Get Olympus flashguns, they work perfectly (except FL40, I think).
Patrick.Te Seng 05-25-2009, 03:54 PM Tried my Canon 430EX on my LX-3 clone and it won't fire when shutter is pressed. It does fire when I switch modes using the top knob. Do I have to change something in the setting for external flash?
David Tong 05-25-2009, 04:35 PM Patrick: Not sure about the LX3, but try taping off the Canon contact pins before mounting. ETTL won't work, of course, as Pana can't speak Canon... But center pin firing should work.

Thanks David. The 430EX works in manual mode with my el-cheapo Holga, so was just puzzled why it wouldn't work in manual mode with the LX-3.
So an Olympus flash works out of the box with TTL?
Francis Tuason 05-26-2009, 09:02 AM yes, the Olympus FL-36R, FL-50R and the discontinued FL-20 is fully compatible with the Lx3...
other compatible flash,
Metz 58 Af-1 for Oly/Pana
Metz 48 Af-1 for Oly/Pana
johnluthergarcia 05-29-2009, 07:07 AM Pentax's AF-540FGZ (and probably the 360FGZ to) works with the LX3, not in TTL but close to it.
Use the LX3 in Av or M mode, select the desired aperture & ISO. Set the 540FGZ to A (Auto) mode, match the aperture value, ISO and zoom. From my short testing last night, the output was consistent even when bouncing the flash.
Will post some sample pictures later. :)
JonDexterTan 05-29-2009, 08:07 AM i would suggest the Olympus FL-36r, as it has a small profile (two AA batts only) and high end flash features including tilt/swing head, remote capability and full TTL compatibility with the LX3. my cousin just sold his yesterday for 8k. hehehe.
here's mine.

gianbautista 06-04-2009, 12:55 PM Hi guys,
whats a good compact flash for the LX3? Something like a SB400 or Sunpak PF20XD. I don't want to bring around a flash that's bigger than the camera that i'm bringing. hehehe
thanks!
ryanmatignas 07-04-2009, 10:32 PM Hello! I got an lx3 last week.
was wondering if any of you tried any analog flash on it already? was looking into buying a colorsplash flash and or diana flash for it, but it wouldn't work.
what gives? help!

dindin_lagdameo 07-04-2009, 10:51 PM I tried attaching the SB400 to my LX3 but can't seem to make it work. I thought it would be a plug and play kind of thing.
Help!

the FL-36R is a pretty compact full featured flash that would sit well on your LX-3. imagine getting a flash with tilt, swivel, and diffuser compatibilities without the huge weight and size of full featured speelites, on top of that all it fully-TTLs with the LX-3, no need on guessing for exposure settings with non-TTL compatible speedlites.

Hi Kai.
I tried this last saturday, a diana flash from Team Manila but it won't work. Also tried the colorsplash and, again, it wouldn't work. My lx3 won't detect the two cameras.
What gives?
Oh. And i was told the analog flash'll fry the electronics.. Any truth in that?
Finally, to all the photo gurus there: will a flash sync adapter used on an analog flash and a digital camera with hotshoe (lx3 or any digicam) solve the problems of frying the electronics? (or something like that?) help!

Hi! Have you tried the Olympus FL-20? It's pretty cheap in ebay
kaihuang 07-13-2009, 02:56 AM been using the diana flash since last year, no problem naman so far.. a few of my friends are using it na din, havent heard any horror stories yet..
color splash wont work on the lx3 for some reason.. the diana flash works. we got ours through team manila's lomo store din.
replying to your pm in a few.
kaihuang 07-13-2009, 03:01 AM @dindin, not sure about sb400, but sb800 works.. plug and play style.
@daniel, malakas lang sa battery since its always firing at full blast. but the effect works for me.. so its all good. tagal lang mag recycle and need to bring extra batteries for a whole evening of shooting.
dongsantos 07-20-2009, 11:20 PM I suggest using original accessories/flashes for your cameras...then again where can one buy an orinal Lumix flash like this one here in Manila yuh?

Alvin Lee 07-24-2009, 10:00 PM How can i make my SB600 work with the LX3?
den_lim 09-07-2009, 11:29 AM what's the best small bounce flash for the lx3?
andrewong 09-07-2009, 12:46 PM How can i make my SB600 work with the LX3?
I use my radio trigger.
Ryan_Valiente 09-07-2009, 01:59 PM How can i make my SB600 work with the LX3?
Manual mode.
carlo_mendoza 09-07-2009, 03:50 PM How about any 'prohibited' flashes on the LX3? voltage incompatibilities as I saw on other forums...
carlo_mendoza 09-10-2009, 12:06 PM is it safe to use the SB800 on the LX3?
Ryan_Valiente 09-10-2009, 11:51 PM is it safe to use the SB800 on the LX3?
Yes.
Same with SB900.
Only SB400 won't work on the LX3. :(
renelouesperanzate 11-16-2009, 04:00 PM I'm looking for a flash for this camera also. I had read that Oly FL36 works perfectly for an LX3 but so far only Camerahaus carries it and on an order-basis only (15K). My first choice was actually a Metz 48 AF1 for Oly/Pana but cant find a store that sells it. (JT, Aperture, Camerahaus, etc)
My last resort would be Hidalgo since I had never been there but would go if needed. It is so far from our place.. haha.. Thanks for any input.
johnluthergarcia 11-16-2009, 04:07 PM I highly doubt if a shop in Hidalgo would carry a Metz 48 AF1 for Oly/Pana... your best bet would just be to go with Camerahaus (with local warranty) or buy from ebay (you have to ship it abroad at your own expense to have it serviced if it gets broken).
renelouesperanzate 11-16-2009, 05:34 PM Thanks for the input. I'd dig in some more and try to find where I could buy locally. If all else fails, I might just get that order basis FL36 before the first week of December where I would need it.
jc.jaime 11-16-2009, 08:09 PM i highly recommend the FL36. doesn't dwarf the LX3 as much as the FL50.. works with full auto TTL as well. plus the manual mode of the flash is really fun to work with. hth:)
renelouesperanzate 11-16-2009, 10:42 PM Haha. I see. Well I went to Digital Zoom at GB5 hoping to find an FL36r and sure enough there is one, grabbed it for 13K, fair enough of a price. Now I had a new toy to play with, everything seems to be working very nice on auto, haven't tried manual yet.
johnluthergarcia 11-17-2009, 09:25 AM 13K? Tempting... tempting... tempting.... :D
melvingracilla 11-17-2009, 12:10 PM i highly recommend the FL36. doesn't dwarf the LX3 as much as the FL50.. works with full auto TTL as well. plus the manual mode of the flash is really fun to work with. hth:)
@jc.jaime
do you have a pic of that flash?
jc.jaime 11-17-2009, 12:33 PM here you go sir.. attached to the LX3. photo taken by my gf

melvingracilla 11-17-2009, 11:42 PM nice jaime! i noticed that the lumix FL360 and olympus FL50 has the same looks. is there a big difference between the lumix and olympus flash?
carlo_mendoza 11-18-2009, 01:39 PM You might be referring to the Olympus FL36, not the FL50

size wise, the FL50 is about 1-2inches larger than the FL36 meaning that you'll have to support the flash to avoid any possible damage to the hot shoe or locking pin. though the FL50 does have a higher GN value plus a faster charge up time for the flash. though a higher GN value isn't really necessary esp with the limited zoom capability of the LX3.
if by lumix flash, you mean this flash (https://www.bigcitydigital.co.uk/digital-camera-accessories-282/miscellaneous-panasonic-accessories-308/panasonic-lx3-accessories-333/panasonic-dmw-fl220e-flash-7729.htm), then yes. the lumix does not have the swivel functions of the FL36. BIG DIFFERENCE. hth:)

mackypablo 06-27-2010, 12:13 PM Canon 270EX work just fine with it.
TTL? Thanks.
carljeffreyrogel 06-27-2010, 01:34 PM I used an SB800 on mine. It works just fine but looks odd due to the size difference.
