Hi DPP Members,

Here is the second installation of ultra-popular Photo Face Off. We introduced this last month and printed the results in the last issue of DPP.

As Nick mentioned in the previous Photo Face Off, here's how it works:

a. We are posting two photographs with one distinct theme. You, the reader, will judge which image you like better and make a vote in our poll. We are not telling you which photographer took what photo so there will be no bias here. We also encourage you to comment in a post, what you like or don't like about the image. The PHOTO FACE-OFF will be fun but its main purpose is to be educational. We all hope to learn from the comments posted by our readers because we will be hearing different opinions and perspectives.

b. At the end of the voting, we will announce which photographer took what photo. The two photos will be featured in an upcoming DPP magazine issue along with the best comments posted on the thread.

We emphasize that pointless bashing won't be tolerated.

So here we go. Have fun everyone and looking forward to hearing your takes on our second Photo Face Off.

I like mono and I like motion... Photo 1 was my personal pic...

I can't execute either shot so I won't comment on their technicalities, but for a fashion mag spread, I like the first one a lot. Both are really nice to stare at :)

photo A works for me.. it seems to have more dynamics.. more movements.. more of something..

Photo A hands down. And that's not to say that Photo B is a bad one. But that we might be comparing apples to oranges unlike in the first installment where both images were shot inside a train.

Photo A could be a stand alone pic for a campaign. Photo B, a part of some series in a fashion spread.

Photo A is billboard material. Plus, the bw treatment heightens the energy with no color to distract.

Having said that, Photo B is more fashion than A where A can be an ad for almost anything that calls for energy or movement... Bose, some concert, an energy drink, a mental institution... just kidding :)

thumbs-up for Photo A.

I like the tone the light throw from the side.

Im no expert when it comes to portraiutre.
Both images are good.
But photo A gets my attention from the lighting going to the composition
and the way it was converted to black white.
Details are tack sharp and just like what others have noticed....its a billboard material.:)

PHOTO A for me. Very Dynamic. I agree with Otep! More skin wins:Grin:

For over all visual impact...ill pick Photo A Dynamic, The Attitude, love the mono convertion and most of all 3 is better than one... ha ha ha..

but since this is face off challenge DPP has the right to pick 2 photos to post in this face off, the photographers has no control which photo are they willing to put in this challenge.

Like Raul Echivarre mentioned "we might be comparing apples to oranges"

Infairness to Photographer in Photo B, im sure he has more awesome photo to put in this challenge if he has an option to do so. = )

Cheers!

I feel photo A is more dynamic:)

Photo B - laymen like myself favor simplicity. my wife loves the pose as it shows top to bottom (especially the high-heeled footwear....) fashion formal wear.

Haha! But, if you look real close there is more skin showing in Photo B. I guess you are referring to geography, rather than quantity...

photo A for me ... more impact

04-29-2009, 06:13 PM
Both photos are awesome but because photo A is more difficult to execute and the model's face deserved a second look, it is the winner in my book...;)

OT: As a surgeon, I can't avoid being distracted by the lump in the neck of the model in Photo B.

Photo B for me, since the theme is "Fashion", the simplicity of the image greatly enhances the fashion elements!

Photo A for sure achieves attention better, but the disadvantage is that, as mentioned by the others you tend to concentrate more on the dynamism and 'skin' rather than the theme.

if we'll talk about fashion... then it's photo A for me... the expression, pose and overall composition suits what the model is wearing... jacket and jeans which for me shows ruggedness & flare and that's what im feeling when i look at this photo. Kudos to this shot! yebah!

Photo: A definitely wins.

Like what others have said, Photo-A has more impact, more dynamic and monochrome rules. This photo sort of reminds me of those Avedon photos done for the Calvin Klein campaign.

Photo B, on the other hand, does really catch my eye. If I saw this photo in a magazine, I would probably skip it. That's not saying its bad, but its looks so ordinary in a Preview or Mega magazine. Also, looking closely, I think some Photoshop softening needs to be done on the feet, neck and hands.

Just my 2 cents.

Photo A takes the cake for me.

As what most would say mono sets a different mood and i like the play of emotions.

Photo A
The most striking feature of the image is its movement, and its conversion to monochrome black further highlighted this. The features represented on the image strikes the deeply withheld animal inside the viewer. The model's use of facial expressions adds to the depth of that impression. It clearly takes and keeps a lot of attention away from the peaceful and refined and into the chaotic and wild.

Photo B is an excellent image.
Shadow details are clear. Lighting is fantastic. Skintone is clear and defined. Impact is gentle and muted. Movement is refined.

Fashion and glamour photography requires a clear representation of a message. It could be strong, like Photo A, or it could be subtle like Photo B.

Like most, I have a clear attachment to Photo A, electively, because of the dynamics of the composition. I dislike the composite though, putting three images together into one when only one will quite achieve the objective.

Photo B's model is void of expression, something that makes it immediately uninteresting when pitted with Photo A.

My vote goes to Photo A.

Photo A wins for me while photo B is quite good but when you see photo a it immediately grabs your attention and makes you look at it for more than 5 seconds. For me the Rock n Roll style applied to it catches my fancy.

Both are Great Photos! Good Job!

photo A. works well as a spread, plus the different motions that were captured in the spread.... winner :)

I'm with photo A... it immediately got my attention... more movement... nice ligthing... photo B is also good, but it attracts less attention since it gives the feel that it's a bit common, since you normally see fashion spreads with just 1 model and good lighting in a steady pose...

Photo A. Catches more attention.

I dont have any idea about fashion.. =) But for me, photo B is so classic that you can usually see in a fashion magazine. Photo A is so urban oriented that mostly you can see in billboards.

Both pictures are great and they have they're own unique approach. And off course, I only voted for one which is simple yet elegant

looks to me like fashion vs glamour.

photo A is more of a glamour shot emphasizing the attributes of the model.

while photo B looks more like a fashion shot as it focus more on the style of the clothes, hair and shoes.

i call it a tie.

The first photo works for me. It screams more emotion, movement, and life. I like that it's done in black and white and leaves you with simple, raw conveyances of the photograph. It also captures more element in a frame from a spherical viewpoint of multiple frames.

Photo A. It conveys unconventional ideas, dynamic, sexyness, and most of all having fun.

Cheers.

Photo A for me. I just can't my eyes out on it. The emotion is very intense. I want to go inside the photo, embrace her to stop her from moving... hehehe.

Photo A as other said is good for ads that show dynamism.

Photo B is good for ads for a clothing company like.... hmmm... folded n hung?

Both are great! But photo A is just more appealing for me. more skin and a beautiful latina face I guess. :D

Photo A conveys more emotion, its more sexy, its more appealing to men. Its like the animal inside her is struggling to get out.

i like photo A. the mono treatment, movement and the expression of the model conveys energy and ruggedness, to my taste more appealing

I think we have a runaway winner here.. for me it's Photo A. I agree with most comments that Photo A is more dynamic, the facial expressions denotes strong emotion, sharpness and contrast were explicitly depicted being converted to monochrome. Billboard material.

I am not a fashion photographer but as a customer of magazines I would have to say Photo A is more appealing to me. The gritty B&W treatment definitely grabs attention and is punctuated even more by the hard light on the subject. The model's emotion can definitely be felt as I viewed it.

Photo B's colors are also appealing. It has a subtle look which is pleasing to the eye. The model seems to be in a very awkward pose and even if she tries to hide it with her face, one can tell the awkwardness in her position. But I think the reason I like Photo A more is that photos similar to Photo B can be seen in many billboards along the major thoroughfares in Manila. It's not the fault of the photo in my book, it's just that I have seen it more often compared to Photo A.

Photo A for me. I love fashion shots that show movement and this one has lots of it. Very dynamic plus the subtle lens flares also add to the impact. I also love B&W. Photo B is technically sound but it is more f your typical fashion shot.

I choose photo A, refreshing and very strong impact to the readers it catches my attention.

Most likely photo A for billboard that requires short look that can convey the message in a short span of time and photo B in a page of a fashion magazine. Cheers!

I voted for Photo B - For me its unique. It made me think if the model is a girl of boy. No offense. maybe because of the make up. it made me think also the pose of holding the leg. Something that will catch your attention and think. Theres a lot of questions in photo b why the shot has to be like that. A thousand words for this photo.

While Photo A is very common for me. ive seen lots of shots in mags like that. is the model duplicated? i will choose photo A if theres only one model shot in the frame...
i like the tone and contrast by the way...

Congrats to both of you... Good Luck!

I like both shots. While I'm no expert, the technical aspects of both shots are at par with each other (I'm assuming the 'flare' on Photo A was intentional). Impactwise, Photo A wins it hands down but the colors of Photo B and the way the Photographer controls the lights and shadows are excellent and quite talks about the mood of the photograph. But since the theme is 'Fashion Photography' I went with Photo A as the 'Lifestyle' aspect of the photo speaks more to me than Photo B.

Photo A for visual impact. the mono treatment helped in toning down the movements in the shot; there is so much dynamics in the picture without making it look 'trying too hard'.

I'd pick Photo A, it's not just any fashion photo, it's more like an entry to Lee's past photo contest which tells a story. It gives out an edgier look (has character), complemented by the black and white treatment.

But that we might be comparing apples to oranges...

..the BW treatment heightens the energy with no color to distract.

I agree. There might be some mismatch. Picture A has much more to offer than B (more impact, more models, more contrast, more skin! haha)

Picture A is a runaway winner. Picture B is not half-bad, though.

I think i'll go for b, cannot take such a picture, its awsome and the contrast is really great. kuddos for the photographer

Both are shots we've seen before. But if I really have to pick I'd go for A, there's more going on, it communicates more, it has more emotion going on, photo B is just another fashion shot.

I vote for photo number 1...I could sense that both photos had comprehensive layout to follow prior to the photo shoot. The photographer of photo number did a lot of efforts to end up with that final image such as lighting, model movements and emotions and composing the three images, while photo number 2 is just a simple one light source and a bounce reflector that give the photographer an easy work.
Both images are good but I go for the hardwork done by the Photographer.
