:D I've been wanting to buy a wide lens with a bigger opening (F2.8). My camera is a Nikon D50 with 18-70 mm DX ED lens and a 70-300mm G lens. Does anyone know what lens should I buy? The cheapest please.

The Nikon 17-55 F2.8 automatically pops in my mind but that is an expensive lens. Next would be the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 which is around 23-27k in price.

The nikon 12-24mm is also wide but it only comes with a constant f4 opening.

you dont actually use F2.8 on a wide-end of the lens.

I don't think cheap and F2.8 really go together. But the only practical wide lens is the 12-24 f/4. Which is equivalent to 18-36 on full frame.

You already have a good wide angle with the kit lens at 18mm. At f/3.5, that is within half a stop of f/2.8. Try bumping the ISO :)

I'm not sure you would be ready to spend mucho dinero on a 14mm f/2.8 or a 10.5 f/2.8 fisheye:Grin:

you may want to look at a tokina 12-24mm f/4 . I bought one and it has been attached to my Dslr since.

12-24 is highly recommended...sigma 10-20 is also nice.

Nikon 12-24 gets my vote! :) If you want really wide, maybe the Nikon 10.5 Fisheye!

The Tamron 11-18 seems affordable. USD 550 I think.

Here's a Digital Wide Zoom (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/digital-wide-zooms/comparison.htm) comparison article from Ken Rockwell.

contemplating whether to get a nikon 12-24 or a tokina 12-24mm

both lenses are deemed good to excellent according to several online reviews, but I still can't decide...

I have a similar dilema...which wide angle to purchase...i have a canon 20d and i am considering getting the 16mm - 35mm f2.8 (main reason....f2.8) however, the 10-22mm does have an ultra wide angle....any thoughts / suggestions?

I shoot mainly sports but I must say most the places I've been to do have awesome views that cry out "WIDE ANGLE LENS"....would love to hear from the masters of landscape photography...

Based on Levi's pictures the Tokina 12-24 is a great performer compared to the Nikkor, at a much more affordable price. I would get one though I am not much of a landscape or UWA shooter :) though a fish might suit me

Hey Leni,

I would say 10-22mm the smaller aperture isn't a big factor here since landscapes would make you use a larger DOF which requires a tripod :) If you're gonna go wide, might as well get the widest :)

How much does the NIkon 12-24 and Tokina 12-24 cost?

I believe the Nikon Costs 40+ while the Tokina lies in the mid 20s :)

you may want to look at the new tokina 10-17mm fisheye. It can be mounted on a nikon, canon and pentax.

ninjaedit: available in Hongkong already

I'm voting for the Tokina 12-24 because the IQ is great for its price. Sigma 10-20 is softer especially in the corners. Most complaints I have read are all about uneven corner-side softness. My friend has one and the right-side is extremely softer than the left even at F8; did i mention corners are somewhat soft even at smaller apertures as well? It could be sample variation but the number of better copies are so few that one might think that the good copies are the sample variation.

The Tokina gets my vote, IQ is similar to the Nikkor, but the Nikkor handles flares and contra light a bit better. Build quility the Tokina wins hands down, for something that costs 40+K I'd expect better quality plastics, the Tokina is built like a tank.. heck all Tokinas are built like tanks.... hmmm since I'm pursuing the Tokina 28-80 2.8 i might as well get rid of everything else and get the 80-200 2.8 and go all Tokina... hehe

back on topic. The Tokina is a good choice with almost no compromises when it comes to quality, I had a Sigma 10-20 before although I found the range useful, it's sharpest images come from 20mm @ f5.6. When I had to give it up for streamlining purposes, I took a really long and hard look at the Nikkor 12-24 & Tokina 12-24 the Tokina won out in the end.

Peace!

Hi ken. you mentioned that you took a really long and hard look between the Nikkor 12-24 & Tokina 12-24. Is price the only real factor why you opted for the Tokina? Or does the Nikkor has other disadvantages as well?

Hi Cezar,

Just want to know what your experience is with the 70-300mm G lens. Will it autofocus in the Nikon D50 as from what I know, it is an old model lens. It's quite inexpensive thought so I am interested if I can make use of it and what is the quality of the image produced.

Thanks

Hi ernie:

I have used a 70-300G on my D50 before. Yes, it autofocuses on the D50. Really cheap zoom lens. IQ is good stopped down though a bit slow at f4. Sold mine when i opted for a walkaround lens since i seldom change lenses for tele shots

Thanks Carlo for the valuable comments.

Found one selling for 8k in Glorietta and will check out the reviews first. May I know how much you sold yours so I can get an idea of whether it is a good investment (if I need to sell it in the future).

Regards,

Ernie
