I have been waiting months for this lens to come out since its initial press release at around Feb. 2006. And now, it's available here in HK. :)

Kaso kulang pa funds ko  hehehe.. ipon ipon pa.

Retails at around 6,600.00 hkd. From a low of 6,300hkd to a high of 6,900hkd based on my last canvas with forumer Willy P.

Kelan kaya ito magiging available locally (Philippines)?

Hi,

I'm also waiting for this lens but funds would not be available until the last quarter of this year. A friend of mind told me the JTPhotoworld should have this lens here by next month. As for the price I still don't have any idea.

Roy

Does this mean the non-macro version will be discontinued? Seems it'll be priced exactly like the non-macro version?

Or maybe this means reduced prices on the non-macro version? That would test my resolve to buy only Nikkor lenses! :) It's such a great lens even compared to the Nikkor version!

A couple of shots I took with one I borrowed from a friend:

hi gerry,

i dont think it will be discontinued. and even so, i think there is a lot more in the market for the non-macro version. the price difference here in hong kong is almost 1thou hkd for the non-macro versus the macro version. im hoping the macro version price will lower a bit in a few months time when more stores start offering them. even i had to control myself from buying the non-macro because based on reviews alone, good buy ang old version.

sensya na po for always referring to prices here in hk kasi i am based here. at least you guys back home have an idea how much the going prices are here.

i have the older version, non-macro and non-dg and i haven't used it enough to determine if it's really a "great" lens.

hsm is pretty good though, but not as reliable as the AF-S in my 18-70 nikon lens.

this macro version should be better.

though sigma just came out with a 50-150mm f/2.8 DC lens. :)

& I have the Oldest  70-210 f2.8 which would only do f3.0 on a D70/s but would go to f2.8 on a F100 or S2pro. this alone is fun to use what more yung latest iteration.

those are good quality shots....did you have to post process or are they as is?

what's making me lean over this unit is really the price when compared to the canon 2.8 L version....later on i plan to add the 2x teleconverter and it costs 10t for the sigma model. so lens plus teleconverter would be 60t...on the other hand the canon is 68t plus around 18t for the teleconverter....haaayy......decisions in life :-(

Yup that 50-150 is a very interesting and useful lens. I wonder how Sigma will price this one. They price their DC lenses almost, if not just as high as their FF lenses (example, the 18-50mm 2.8 EX DC is 26K, while the 24-70 2.8 EX DG is around 25K, i think). I really hope they get this lens right (design and pricing) and/or nikon and canon pick up on this idea and incorporate VR/IS on it. Just thinking out loud....

hi vince.

i saw the 50-150mm f/2.8 at bhphoto already and it costs about $670.
the 18-50 f/2.8 is priced lower na, i think. jan tan emailed me their latest pricelist and it's lower than 24K now.

going back to the 70-200mm f/2.8, I went thru all my flickr images and compiled them for everyone: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chewychua/sets/72157594245623799/

you'll find the images to be rather warm compared to my other nikkor shots, but it's not bad.

i like this one, because it's of my sweetie, just taken this afternoon at canyon woods. heheheh

Hi,

Just bought one last weekend at JT....performance looks promising... :D You will really need to test the lens since one of the copy I've tested has some front focusing problems.

I'll do some test and hopefully I could give some feedback on this lens.

Hi Roy,
Congratulations on your new lens. hehe Just curious, is it worth it to get this lens especially since the nikkor 80-200 f2.8 is priced below it (i bought mine for 43K, i think). How nice is its macro feature?

i was able to test roy's new glass this afternoon.

pretty neat. super silent! and fast focusing.

definitely faster than my 80-200. :)

roy - if you like you can borrow my lens to compare the color, sharpness and contrast of the 2 glass:)

Thanks Vince,

I bought this lens instead of the Nikon 80-200mm for 2 reasons.

1st is because of the HSM...I was so spoiled with the AFS of my kit lens so i decided I wanted a quiet lens...:)

2nd is the minimum focusing distance compared to other lenses of the same range. I don't know if this would qualify as a Macro lens since the ratio is only 1:3.4(not completely sure).

Right now the price of the nikon 80-200mm is equal if not higher than the new sigma.

For me its worth it to get this lens specially since JT gave a 12months 0%interest via BPI or Equitable Credit card.

Thanks again,
Roy

Bosing...salamat sa pagpapahiram mo sa akin ng 80-200mm before I bought the Sigma...medyo mabibilis ung test subject ko kaya ung HSM ang naging kicker sa pagkuha ng lens na ito.

I'll try to post some pics pag nabigyan ko na ng full test itong lens na ito...:)

I am also considering the Nikon 80-200 AFD. AFS sana if meron but its hard to find.

Just a few questions:

1. Is the noise of the 80-200 that loud that it could be a deal breaker?

2. More importantly, is the focusing of the Sigma a lot better than the Nikon. I read from kenrockwell that the AFD version is 80% as fast as the AFS version in focusing. My question is how much faster is the SIgma vs the AFD version?

Decisions... decisions...

levi lacandula
09-26-2006, 12:11 PM
@ john

if you're planning on buying the nikkor glass get the AFD or the VR.

Aside from the difficulty of getting the AFS version, its quite pricey (almost the same as the VR version).

i have the AFD version and tested Roy's new sigma 70-200... here's my take on your questions.

1. yep, AFD is indeed noisy if you compare it to the new sigma. is it a deal breaker? it depends on what you usually shoot. i do travel photography and i really dont mind the noise and "jerking" feel when the lens is focusing. whats bussing me is the weight of the lens! hehehe

2. based from personal experience, the new sigma focuses faster than my AFD. not sure though how much faster. the AFD is no slow (focusing) lens though..

.. good luck!

roy_delacruz
09-26-2006, 01:48 PM
@john

1. Between the Nikon AF-D and Sigma the Nikon version is a bit noisy(this is subject to personal preference) - The noise of the sigma is almost the same as my 18-70 kit lens...maybe my ears could be wrong :D

2. Just like Levi said the sigma focuses a lot faster than the Nikon AF-D, but the af speed of nikon af-d will differ with the bodies you use. It is a lot faster on the D2 bodies than the D70.

Optical quality would be the same (based on my personal experience). I went the Sigma way because of the HSM(AFS) and I also could not afford the AF-S / VR version of Nikon.

I suggest you try out the lenses so that you can easily decide which one to get.

Regards,
Roy :)

Thanks for the info. It's good to hear from someone who has handled both lenses. I have just come from testing a 80-200 AFD. In my opinion its not that far from my 28-70 f2.8 AFS in terms of focus speed (tested in in an office so lighting is not that bad but not great either).

Have you guys by any chance tried shooting sports with the lens? AF speed is one of the things I'm looking at. If the 80-200 AFD's speed is enough for me to shoot sports then I might just get this lens. By the way, I am planning to use this lens in school plays also.

John, I was able to shoot the AF3 race last Sunday using just one lens, the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. You can check the photos at www.pbase.com/hochiabaya/af31 (http://www.pbase.com/hochiabaya/af31)

Minor PP using levels in some pictures. Some no adjustments at all.

Hope this helps.

Hi John,

In 2003 and 2004 I shot UAAP ballgames with this lens. AF speed is not slow but not as fast as Canon's USM. My most prized photo using this lens is a picture of Paolo Bugia and Doug Kramer blocking a driving Glen Manching (UST). If you wanna see the photo it's slide number 19 on my portfolio (URL below).

John,

I own a Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 AFD and a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 HSM. When it comes to fast focusing i would say the Sigma HSM is faster than the Nikon AFD. I sold my Nikon 80-200mm and stick with the Sigma 70-200 HSM.

I hope this helps.

looks like this lens, both length and speed, is a pretty good one to have.

personally, i've recently decided to go after this one, instead of its more expensive canon L IS cousin. in my case, price is probably my main deciding factor, given that i probably won't get to use it that often as i would want to.

Did not own a sigma but i do have the 80-200 f2.8 Nikon lens and it is the build of the lens that i went for. the sigma just does not cut it as a sturdy lens and the sigma that my friend used to own had its paint peeling off after a year or so...did not really appeal to me after that.

so its more of a durability thing, rather than performance?

how often did your friend use his lens? it might've been just (more than) normal wear-n-tear.

yeah. i have the 70-200 f2.8 non macro version though. after a year of use (not hardcore), i noticed some of the paint peeling off. but it's really more of a cosmetic defect. the lens, for me, still rocks!

I've been using the non-macro version for 3 years... very well-built... fast focussing... stunning sharpness... well-saturated colors. The only thing I don't like is the strange bokeh textures it provides compared to my other fast fixed focal lenses.

Hi Hubert,

Fortunately YES! Sigma's HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) works perfectly with Nikon's D40/40x body. You may also want to try the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX HSM DG Macro (a bit cheaper and not as heavy as the 70-200mm beast). I find the 50-150mm more of an all-around lens since I mostly do portrait shots. Having the Macro feature on both is a plus factor (allows a decent close-focussing distance).

i agree this is a very good lens.. my only gripe about is its weight.. but other than that it's a real gem.. best used with a monopod... :)

The 70-200 2.8 EX DG HSM? SOFT. Get the Canon. Or the Nikkor. But that's just my view. To each his own.

+ f/2.8 very much usable albeit a tad soft for poster prints (good for wildlife or low light)
+ very sharp stepped down to f/5.6
+ bokeh is fantastic! best I've seen in any lens so far
+ focuses as near as an arm's length away
+ HSM, so its relatively fast and quiet
+ costs half as much as its Nikon or Canon counterpart
+ compatible with Sigma teleconverters, and works great (I have a 2x)

- Its terribly unwieldy handheld (consider a monopod)
- minor corner light falloff at wide angle, although vignetting not that apparent
- performance at 200mm very dissapointing
- on a 1.5x crop, is too zoomed to be useful for portraiture (consider 50-150mm instead)

nice pics spam.. who's the girl? she looks like bianca araneta... hehehe...

i agree this is a very good lens.. my only gripe about is is it's weight.. but other than that it's a real gem.. best used with a monopod... :)

that is the reason y i settled for the 50-150 instead..

wats d update on ur 18-70? any new pics taken lately? :)

Ey migs, congrats on the 50-150 sir :) pm you pag nandyan ako sa manila, shoot tayo :) took pics already with the 18-70, will post later, i have a couple of pics posted on my flickr :) check it out dude :D

Confusing!!! I'm planning to get either a 70-200 2.8 sigma but the 50-150 2.8 is also good at a cheaper price. The P50T for the 70-200 2.8 Sigma is still a bit too high. I haven't seen any used units here yet being sold.

I have a Tokina 28-80 2.8 for portraits so kinda leaning on a 70-200 2.8.

Love my Sigma 14mm (even if it hunts at times) so I have no problems w/ 3rd party lenses

but got this also in the process

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y12/rsh78ph/sigma/sigmama.jpg

Now, my cam w/ this wont fit! What can accomodate this!!!

Sad to say, I wasn't able to test the telecon because some customer was complaining for such a stupid thing and I praise Joy (attendant) for handling it well.

Yet, I might get to try it tom. My Sigma 14mm has a problem, the focus ring - a tooth got busted. It makes a whining noise at times. Doesn't affect the performance but irritates me (HSM nga so SILENT dapat) so I had it fixed. I'll pick the lens up muna tom. since the part will arrive from Japan in a month pa!!! ryan, hmmmmm i used my lowepro minitrekker before. now i use my pelican 1510 for all of my gears, the sigma is attached to my d50 once it's in the pelican. then when i shoot around, i usually put the lens in a lowepro lens case 4 attached to a lowepro toploader zoom :D when i'm lazy, i attach the lens to the body and use the toploader. with the hood in reverse :D with a toploader 75 or 70, the lens will fit snuggly. but i suggest, since you have other lenses, get a toploader zoom aw, then get a lowepro lc4 :D and other lens cases for the other lenses :D

worthwhile investment for the gears dude hehehehehehe easier to lug around if you use the lowepro system as well. i think tamrac does have lens cases as well, you can use that as well and attach it using the tamrac MAS system. either way, win win :D

It really seems like a great lens. Really the only thing missing is VR... but I suppose that depends on your shooting style as well. Sports people won't really mind since I think higher shutter speeds are a priority and panning hardly uses VR anyway... Which incidentally is probably what I'll be using this for once I get it.

So we've heard the praising and waxing poetically about this lens... How about the downsides? Are there any quirks and niggles that you'd prefer not to have when using this? Any problems aside from peeling paint and the rare but oft-heard QA issues of SIGMA?

I just wanted to see the black-hat/devil's advocate side for this lens...

major downside of the lens is the weight, it's really hard to lug around your neck always especially if you use the unpadded neck straps that the manufacturers supply with the cam. another downside would be the paint chipping of the body. personally, i don't mind the paint chipping of, as long as the qa of the lens itself is ok :D

If you plan to have panning shots w/ this lens, get a monopod w/ a ball and socket head. P1,900 at JT for this type of monopod (if I remember correctly).

Downside? No OS. Hehehe... P30T more, you'll get the Nikkor 70-200 2.8 w/ VR (if you see it as you have saved P47T already and just a few thousand short for the vr)

for a 70-200mm at constant 2.8, you can't expect a light lens...it's the same weight as the canon 70-200 2.8...if you wan't something lighter then go for the canon 70-200 f4

With those apertures for indoor events you need a tripod to get sharp pictures unless the light is sufficient enough to get you a shutter speed that is quite over the focal range of your lens plus the teleconverter.

marvindungao's photos are phenomenal! ang ganda ng bokeh and the sharpness and contrast are simply astounding...but why does the macro version of this lens get a good bashing sa reviews, like at fredmiranda.com (the non-macro however is highly recommended there)? there are reports of misfocusing just out of the box, and you have to send it back to the shop for recalibration. is that the common experience with you guys? i'm really looking forward to buying a copy of this lens, unless its a ton of headaches before it works right...

Thanks Bambam....i also read from other forums that the non macro version was more favored over the macro version. I am not sure if this is true or not i haven't got the chance to try out the macro one, maybe Im just lucky that I was able to get a good copy..

Well, I went ahead and doggone did it. I was torn between this lens and the 50-150mm f/2.8, because for the same sharp IQ output of both Sigmas, the pros and cons were now squarely on price and weight, all to the advantage of the lighter, cheaper 50-150mm. But yesterday, I passed by Acel in Hidalgo and they were selling a 70-200mm store display model for the same price as a brand new50-150mm!...Well, not anymore, because its mounted on my cam as of today

I never understood the weight issue, until I started carrying it around. Oo nga! you really have to know how to pace yourself with this lens or you'll soon find yourself with strained biceps and shoulders. But the output! wow!simply incredible. Tutoo nga sabi nila, when you see your images, the fatigue just melts away...thanks sir Marvin D for the inspiration. No wonder a lot of owners gave it good reviews around the Internet...

PS Hope to post some photos from this lens soon...

Congrats Bambam.... post some shots...

yeah about the weight issue its heavy.. every after a wedding I always feel a strain on my wrist, If you have a battery grip try to shoot sideways and mount the grip on your shoulders.. it will help a lot with the weight to avoid camera shake. Try to shoot more with that lens after some time you'll get use to the weight... just like carrying a 70-200 with a VR =)

Bambam Ilusorio
11-09-2007, 02:30 PM
Thanks! Thanks for that tip too. I was debating with the camera grip issue whether I should get one while I was in Hidalgo. I didn't because instictively I've always shot verticals with the same button, and is faster (for me) since you don't transfer/reposition your hand anymore. But you've pointed out the advantage of virtual VR (or in my case, IS)in getting a grip, so hmmm...but how do you mount in your shoulder, as you've mentioned? also, I have yet to shoot a wedding with this kind of weight, and I didn't realize your wrist will suffer too..yaiks! No weight training for that  I guess you're right, practice practice.

How about a monopod by the way? How does that affect your shooting of weddings?

marvindungao
11-09-2007, 11:15 PM
nope.. i haven't tried to shoot with a monopod..kc with my kind of shooting.. usually events... it involves alot of walking and quick movement.. so i guess a monopod would not help me that much or in worst baka lalo lng ako mahirapan....

wel about the position of shooting ...its hard to describe but you will shoot side ways..and can only do that with horizontal shooting.... your shoulder will act as the monopod while you hold the camera normally in your right hand and adjust the s zoom with your left... sorry magulo ko mag describe..

Emmanuel - I think this and the 70-300vr are two different animals. I feel that 300mm will be short for birding. My dream lens for that is the 50-500 Sigma. I missed a chance to own one. Sayang!!!

Emmanuel Deoferio
11-14-2007, 11:37 AM
Ryan, you're right the 50-500 is great for birding and be able to close in on distant subjects but I'm concerned about its weight. At least for the Nikkor 70-300VR its holdable, the Sigma 70-200 is fast and able to shoot in low-light.

If you need the range you can always get the Sigma TC 1.4 or 2.0. It'll bump up your aperture as well but a 280mm F4 is preferrable to a 300mm 5.6 i think...

ryanhayudini
11-18-2007, 09:27 PM
diego - 200mm at 2.8 is a bit soft yet very useable (see my post on the sigma 70-200 2.8 thread) even when cropped. I'll try to do your request. It sharper at f/4.

This lens isn't the same as the 70-200vr but I feel that it is at the same level as the nikon 80-200 but took this lens for its HSM (faster focusing plus works on my D40x) as I have sold my D80.

I agree. Though I think the 1.4X TC is the way to go. Using a 2X TC is pushing it.

A bit OT here: You sold your D 80? Why? Normally, everybody is upgrading to a D 80 from a D 40. You took the road less travelled. BTW: any experienced with the APO Sigmas 50-150 mm f/2.8 HSM? Thanks:)

Diego - Just have plans  Also, some limitations of the D40x can be worked around to get the same quality as the D80 and I have no CLS plans so I won't miss the commander mode. I learned the differences when I both had them (had a D40 way back). I was told that the 50-150 is a sharp lens and great for portraits you can ask Alan Sevilla as he owned one and I think Miggy had one before. I didn't get that one because I wanted a reach of atleast 200.

Oh....ok thanks. Anyway the D40/40x can still be use in a CLS like mode. I did it, I used it with a falcon eyes IR trigger and an IR receptor and I can command and trigger 2-3 slave flash.....cheap pa. So I think the D 40/40x has no limitations (except the lens) U just have to work URself around it:)

Question on the Macro version guys... Is the tripod collar removable? I find it sort of a hindrance when hand-holding the lens. It intereferes with zooming since you have to move your hand everytime. Makes tracking some subjects pretty cumbersome.

Just saw it nga. I think they improved the focusing distance and lens coating. I am guessing that it will be priced the same here. Anyway, I won't sell this unless I get my hands on a 70-200vr  since that will be a real upgrade but I would rather spend the money on a D300 (iso performance is the bomb!)

So there are 3 versions of this lens

this is so intresting..

btw, it is easy to see if the item is defective or "lemon" right? i might get too jumpy and get it without testing thoroughly due to excitement. :)

i still have to save enough money to get one though.

sir randy_b, stunning, sharp photos! seems you got a nice copy of the lens. i'm starting to doubt my first gen sigma 70-200, although it was highly rated vs the macro version. did you have yours calibrated after purchase, or was it problem-free from the box?

Besides the focal range, this lens is compatible with full frame / 35mm cameras - DG designation.

The 50-150 is a DC lens and is compatible only with APS-C sized sensors.

Ey Marty! Nice meeting you too. Yup, bought the lens wasn't able to resist. Got a good sample, fast focus and relatively sharp. Also acts as a 1.5 kg weight for my biceps. :D

Overall I'm pleased with this piece of glass, bang for the buck. Some caveats a little soft wide open, warm tone, CA at end of zoom range & weighs like a tank. These are minor quips but I love the images I'm getting from the lens so far.

i have a gut feeling if you check carefully there may be a bit front/backfocusing, and if corrected it'll be much sharper. not saying that from your images ha, it's just that 2 out of the 3 sigmas i use had a teeny bit of front focusing. thought they were a bit soft wide open too. now they're really sharp wide open!

Guys, what's the purpose of locking the aperture at the larger aperture number? I recently bought a pre-owned Sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO EX HSM (non-macro, non-DG) and have been shooting it for days now. Since the manual isn't provided, I'm just wondering about "Lock aperture at largest aperture number"... what's the purpose? Thanks!

Ronald - I also used my 70-200 on my D40/x before. Lock? Since your lens has a manual aperature ring. You should put it on 2.8.

I use to think that the D40+70-200 2.8 would be an ok combo since the weight of the heavy lens is compensated by the ultra light D40/x body. Yet, when I used a D80/200 w/ this lens, found out that it was more balanced hence less likely of shaking.

Yes, the weight of the lens is something to get used too. I love this lens (can't afford the nikkor vr counterpart)

ryanhayudini

Ronald - Its used on SLRs (film) w/ no aperature setting on its body.

NatTiongson
04-08-2008, 10:19 AM
All modern lenses from Nikkor (G-type) w/o aperture rings are set to the highest aperture (smallest opening) by default. The aperture is then opened to the appropriate setting by camera when you are about to take the shot.

When using old lenses with manual aperture rings they have to be set to the highest aperture (smallest opening) to mimic new lenses, this will enable the camera to control the aperture.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikortek.htm

"For an AF camera to control the aperture on any non-G lens with an aperture ring you just turn the aperture ring to the minimum setting in orange (usually f/22) and flick the lock so it stays there, and then everything is done on the camera body. If for some reason the lens is set otherwise the camera will flash something like " F - - " to let you know to set the lens back to the minimum setting."

Although this is a Sigma lens it will have to work this way when mounted on Nikons.

That's so true! :D A heavier body is better to counter balance the weight of the lens. I mounted it on Mic's D80, the combo had better handling. A D80, batt grip and this lens would rock.

If a batt grip isn't available, then another way to balance the setup is to mount a flash (SB600, 800, etc.)...

But as I always shoot with a tripod, I have nothing to worry about :-)

I have a friend who has this lens mounted on a D70, he will not use the lens / camera combo unless he's wearing bicep compressors and using a monopod. :D

OS would definitely make this a much better lens... Unfortunately, SIGMA has this habit of pricing OS lenses near enough the competition's main products (IS/VR versions) that it might just be better to bite the bullet and spend that little bit more for the Nikkor or Canon version... :Scared:
