View Full Version : What lens should I buy?
juniejumig 04-17-2009, 11:24 AM We have a Canon 450D at the office and I'm responsible for the requisition of additional equipment for our dSLR. We usually use our dSLR for:
1. event photography (product launches, festivals, sponsored concerts, etc.)
2. food/product photography (product shots from beverages to candies to chips)
I have an allocation specifically for 2 lenses with P25,000.00 budget each. My question is, what are those two lenses that I should buy that will fit my requirements?
Thank you all!
johnluthergarcia 04-17-2009, 02:47 PM IMO... just buy the 24-105L, it's a very versatile and competent lens.
David Tong 04-17-2009, 02:58 PM 2 lenses for 25K total? That'd be kinda hard...
50mm f/1.8 with kenko tubes for #2... Event, frankly, a flash is more useful if you have the kit.

thanks, johnluthergarcia! can you suggest one more lens? i need to use my budget kasi—2 lenses at P25,000 each max.

thanks, david. actually, it's 2 lenses at P25,000 EACH. do you have a lens suggestion for #1?
David Tong 04-17-2009, 03:32 PM As I've mentioned, if you already have a kit lens, it'll more that suffice for events, but if you don't have a flash, you'll have a tough time doing anything indoors.

+1 on this. Get a decent flash unit instead. Built-in flash is not enough for indoor events most of the time.
Then get a 50mm for your food photos.

thanks, arnold! i forgot to mention i'm also buying a decent flash—canon speedlite ex II.
you guys are a big help!
David Tong 04-17-2009, 03:55 PM If there's a separate flash budget, 17-85 is a good option... but not that big of a jump from a kit for the price...
erwingavino 04-17-2009, 04:30 PM With a budget of 25k each, you could buy a tamron 17-50 2.8 or a sigma 24-70 2.8 for the standard range, and a canon 55-250 IS for the telephoto, and use the change to buy a flash.

Since it will be used for events, id prefer the Tammy over the Sigma, for telephoto needs its either the 55-250 or you can get an 85 1.8 prime(for much better IQ)
Randy Imperial 04-18-2009, 02:48 AM I also prefer the Tammy 17-50mm and the canon 85mm f.18:) Good for your budget.
Nathaniel Salang 04-18-2009, 07:43 AM If possible, try to make sure also that the people who will be using your photography gear are people who know how.
Event and product photography aren't exactly easy. Some basic photography training will help make your company's investment in equipment worth it.

thanks for the comment. yes, we took basic photography, food photography, and commercial product photography at PCCI.
michaelcruz 04-20-2009, 08:51 PM Actually, the 24-105 f4 L would be around 44K already... So you have 6 k to spare, maybe a 50mm f1.8 or a second hand flash (with manual control)....
juniejumig 04-21-2009, 08:52 AM thank you all for your valuable advice!
based on your replies and other photographer friends i made a requisition for a Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM and a Sigma 18-200/3.5-6.3 DC OS. also for a Canon Speedlite 430ex II.
thanks again!
emarmabasa 04-21-2009, 10:09 AM Use the kit lens and buy a flash for your events coverage, and the 50mm prime for your macros.
