Hi Guys,

This week, you might be experiencing problems connecting to DPP, this is because that we are upgrading the Forum to serve the community better. At the same time, we're updating Captcha and will be implementing a new system for registrations to battle spammers.

We've noticed a considerable amount of spammers in this site lately, flooding mostly the photojournalism and critique sections of the Forum. Starting this week, all new registrations will need the approval of the site administrator before they can start posting anything in the community.

Let me know if there's any problems regarding the Forum.

and here's another spammer. They're actually wising up a bit, because I saw one or two spammers this morning with "real" names. I'll see if I can find them again.

OT: Is it possible to create Pages on TODAYS POST column?
I can only browse the last 50 thread topics on that column. I think its the default settings.

the upgrade has been implemented. all new sign ups requires administrator approval before they can post or participate in the site. that should stop the spammers from logging in. now, we're doing cleanup.

Nino, it seems to me that your implementation is working. I have not seen a spam in the last few days, although I've seen bum signups, jusyt like this one, today: monokeeloX (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/member.php?u=46039)

3 Days cannot connect on dpp using Smart and GLobe connections. Just today I did successfully connect. Oh and btw, there is a 50thread limit on Todays Post, why not increase it to several pages so we can catch up. Or at least have a "recently unread list". Thanks

i've notice that this spambot/person has joined the site several times, often changing his name. i think the first was just 'xiao' but he always posts spam about netetrader.com (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/search.php?searchid=4092407)

hasn't he been banned yet?

Pao: Allow me to explain in broad strokes how spam works...

These are auto spambots, not 'humans', they're not even going through the sign-up process to create an account as there are software that can do this with 2-3 clicks of the mouse.

These apps can create accounts using unique IP addresses and email addresses that can bypass CAPTCHA even hence the proliferation of these accounts. There's no way you can prevent these spam bots from creating false accounts and mass-posts without limiting a lot of 'real' human IPs in the ban list as well.

So don't assume nor imply that the system/admins/mods are turning a blind-eye on a particular person or account as these are NOT human accounts and they're sophisticated enough to bypass vbulletin or any popular forum software's security measures to a certain extent.

The only thing a community forum can do is to be quick to respond by reporting these posts so we can manually ban the particular IP that created the post/account, but if the same 'person' launches the same tactic to promote that URL or anchor text link, it'll go through 90% of the time.

thanks daveT, that guy seemed to be a repeat offender since i've seen the nick and the spam several times in the past. i didnt know that it was that easy and about the high probability of recreating a spam account in dpp.

I think the admin disabled the Spam question when creating a account. Problem is, when enabled, it doesn't work properly, and not able to create an account for weeks.

spam users are coming out of the woodwork. I suggested via PM a possible application for VBulleting for filtering spam accounts and posts. Dunno if it's being used or switch to that.
