Breathtaking Vistas:
Fine Art Photographs by Jing Magsaysay at OWG
November 17-December 1

In his close to two decades experience in broadcast journalism, Jing Magsaysay has constantly been at the center of the action. Having covered some of the country’s most significant news events—the series of coup attempts that rocked the Aquino Presidency, the PAL crash in Benguet, the Mt. Pinatubo eruption to name a few—the fervor and dedication he has invested in the field has always been driven by an innate curiosity, an inner instinct to know and understand the how’s and the why’s of everyday occurrences. It is due to this impetus, this drive, which brought him to the fast paced world of broadcasting and the fascinating world of photography.

Since retired, (gone is the 24/7, always-on-call schedule that came with his former profession) Magsaysay can now devote more time to taking photographs, something that began when he first laid hands on his father’s Petrie camera. He has taken snap shots, including numerous Ektachrome slides, of the Cordilleras, Bicol, Ilocos, and other locations in and around our Islands. While on coverage, he would make sure that a camera was ready at hand in the event that a moment of interest would catch his eye, so that he could capture it.

The rising and setting of the sun as well other breathtaking vistas make up his exhibit at OWG. He chose the subjects because, he says, they make for very powerful imagery. And while in the subject of power, Magsaysay believes that the strength of photography as a medium lies in the fact that it is “accessible” to more people and that it’s easier for people to see the nuances and relate to the emotions that they convey. Also, he adds, photography is more “real” and is bereft of any biases and inclinations.

Unavoidably, his experiences as a broadcast journalist have shaped him as a person and to a certain degree, as a photographer. With all the news stories he was made to cover—from gripping to heart wrenching, dangerous to moving—he has learned to have a better appreciation of life and a better understanding of people. It is essential, he say, that we hear both sides before drawing any forgone conclusion.

An especially glaring point that seems to cut across Jing Magsaysay’s photographs is how they appear to run opposite the milieu that he used to situate himself in on a daily basis. Whereas television news is always on the go and frenzied, his photos, in a sense, serve to release him from that kind of crazed atmosphere (a break form regular programming if you will) and, if only momentarily, brings him back to earth.

Breathtaking Vistas will run at the OWG. Soft opening on November 17. Opening Cocktails on November 24. The show will run until December 1, 2006.
