View Full Version : Beat MY Newbie Photo GAME!!
GeraldBARIA 04-08-2009, 11:49 PM I've got an idea to stir c&cs of newbies around..Ive thought of a game we can play. Here's how it goes:
1. Im gonna post my best shot here.
2. You (another newbie) challenge my photo by posting your best shot too.
3. A winner will be decided by DPP Gurus, Masters and/or Da Vincis comments. They must give a clear reason why one wins over the other, and no member of the same level or higher than them should dis-agree withy their decision..:)
4. Whenever a photo is said to have lost, another one may challenge the winner..either a new newbie, or another new photo by the loser.:)
NOTE: No post production editing pls! Picture must be posted straight from the camera file.
Won't that be fun right?! Here's my best shot so far..(in my opinion:D). Please challenge it.:)

JonathanLazaro 04-09-2009, 12:58 AM I'm also a newbie, just got my 1st dSLR a month ago.
I still don't know how to compose a good subject.
This is my lucky shot..

brian.barron 04-09-2009, 03:29 AM I'm not trying to compete here, though, I still consider myself as a newbie. This is one of my favorite shots (take note: FAVORITE, not my best. I don't know if I have one). I don't want to open up a new thread just for this.

eric_javier 04-09-2009, 08:27 AM And the winner is JOSA :)
Reason?
Just looked on the photo, Nice Colors, Nice Composition!
Oh by the way for OP....what is your reason? for just the Master, Guru, Da vinci can decide whos the winner, do you have any idea how hey got those ranking? (Just a Question)
Marci San Diego 04-09-2009, 09:43 AM i still don't own a DSLR yet so i rely on post processing most of the time.
but here's one untouched shot of mine. (well except for the addition of the watermark that is). :p
it's not my "best" though.

+1, I want to ask the same question.
abrahamdomingo 04-09-2009, 10:08 AM +1, I want to ask the same question.
you get the "master" "guru" ranks based on how many posts you have done. more posts you have the more cool dpp name you get.
eric_javier 04-09-2009, 10:15 AM you said it Right Abraham!
So question for the OP, if you have many many many post, your the only one Entitle to Judge??,,I don't agree on those
I prepare a judge that, they are great Photographer, not the Number of post!!...oh by the way I'm not the judge either, because my Photo Sucks and I don't have a master, Guru or Da Vinci....:D:D:D
you get the "master" "guru" ranks based on how many posts you have done. more posts you have the more cool dpp name you get.
Randy Imperial 04-09-2009, 10:20 AM "master"- "guru", it doesn't matter:) That's only the number of posts:) Anybody is entitled to c&c (newbie or veterans):)
jmdeleon 04-09-2009, 10:30 AM maybe the thread starter is not yet aware of that... at first, one can actually be confused of these tags... but he should know now :) maybe he canchange the rules he set on this... +1 on anybody is entitled to give their c&c's :) good day everyone
Marci San Diego 04-09-2009, 10:41 AM maybe the reson for using the ranking system is for some kind of "authority" on who can out-judge previous decisions. and since users with higher ranks means the ones with the most comments, which also means they have a lot of experience in giving C&C's, it can be used as some kind of "authority" for judging...
but i think anyone can give their C&C's. but only those with higher ranks can choose a "winner". just for the sake of the "GAME"....
this is my just opinion on rule#3. :)

Hi marci:) "authority"? I didn't see that on the rules:)
ChrisMontano 04-09-2009, 10:46 AM I think we need to first vote for a panel of judges, four veteran and expert photogs like Sir Jo Avila or Sir Aaron Ebio, and then one Moderator of dpp. We PM them and if they agree, they will be the one to vote for best shot GAME... Whaddayathink?

Well, PM the thread starter first. This is his idea anyway:)
Marci San Diego 04-09-2009, 10:53 AM @Randy
that was just my opinion. besides, the ranking system is the nearest thing we DPP users have to a real proof of our level. :p (well besides from our posts of our shots which is not included in our user profile/data) :)
@Chris
wow. that will make the game a lot more serious. http://statics.plurk.com/a55bdb344892676b0fea545354654a49.gif

Copy that marci:)
abrahamdomingo 04-09-2009, 11:10 AM maybe this can help. if this is a "game" let it be among us. no need for experts and administrators. i not saying they cant participate but what im thinking is submit a photo and let everybody vote. then the one who has most votes wins. simple as that.

+1 on this. much better. majority wins... but that will make the game a one-shot game. more like a contest. :)
the game should be revised. http://statics.plurk.com/a55bdb344892676b0fea545354654a49.gif

Not really.:) I just take from designation that Im a newbie so Im Freshman, then there's sophomores, then seniors..So i assumed the Gurus, Da vincis, and Masters are from a whole other dimension like admins or professors or dpp editors or something.:) Can you please tell me how they got those designations? I have no idea.

Hi Gerald:) More posts means you upgrade your rank from freshmen, junior, senior, master etc.(refer on the 10 commandments) There are freshmen here or juniors that are pros actually:)
abrahamdomingo 04-09-2009, 11:24 AM Hi Gerald:) More posts means you upgrade your rank from freshmen, junior, senior, master etc. There are freshmen here or juniors that are pros actually:)
+1 from what ive seen here te pro's have least amount of posts in the forum.

those designations are achieved by posting. the more you post, the "higher" your designation. :)
arnoldabaya 04-09-2009, 11:25 AM +1 on abraham. yep majority wins. hopefully everybody won't vote on their respective photos. hehehe.
so it's still "best shot" right? meaning anything under the sun?
Won't it be better if there were best shot on a "general theme" like father and son, or egg...?
Randy Imperial 04-09-2009, 11:26 AM +1 from what ive seen here te pro's have least amount of posts in the forum.
Yes because most of them have studios or on assigments. so they're pretty busy to get involve over here on regular basis:)
Randy Imperial 04-09-2009, 11:27 AM BUT, posts should be constructive :)
abrahamdomingo 04-09-2009, 11:28 AM +1 on abraham. yep majority wins. hopefully everybody won't vote on their respective photos. hehehe.

it just comes to an honesty system of voting. here comes the test on how honest we are. for me lets say i post my photo so yes i like it but if i will vote ill vote for the egg shot.
GeraldBARIA 04-09-2009, 11:33 AM I think we need to first vote for a panel of judges, four veteran and expert photogs like Sir Jo Avila or Sir Aaron Ebio, and then one Moderator of dpp. We PM them and if they agree, they will be the one to vote for best shot GAME... Whaddayathink?
Great Idea!! But if they've had the most post, maybe they are the one's who's had the most experience in giving out C&C's and judging newbie pics..You know how it is with this art, besides talent you need a lot of experience. I just want the judges to be of "authority", someone we feel really knows what he's taliking about..more subjective not only on the technical side but also on the artsy side of things. Having experts give out judgements are also good..more authority is welcome..(I just don't know any that's why I did'nt mention.:)) Can anyone who knows them please PM them! Remember this is also about the participation of the masters..THEIR OPINIONS MUST NOT CONTRADICT EACH OTHER'S remember?! So Its also a matter of interaction with a lot of those so called "Authorities".:) So all of those guys are encouraged to judge. One vote for Josa already..congats!
Now here's a rule I forgot. Just expounding on the 3rd rule. The winner photo must have one winner comment and one confirmation comment by a different "Authotity member (guru, master, editor, prof etc)". Having one disagrreing authority comment becomes a minus on her comment point. So:
1. Positive comment is +1,
2. Dis agreeing comment is -1.
3. To win she /he would need 2 points.:)
eric_javier 04-09-2009, 11:36 AM Hi Gerald,
Those ranking are telling How many POST you aleady did, they ARE not related on how good they are as a Photographer.
For example (this is not an accurate number, just for example)
1-50 Post is a Freshmen
51-100 Sophomore
100-499 Junior
500-999 Senior
and so on.
if you reach 1,000,000 you can get a "GOD" designation (just kidding) :):)
So right Now Don't worry about your ranking, when your looking for some advice "DON'T EVER LOOKED ON THE RANKING",looked on how good is their advice!, even freshmen can give a Good/Great advice/critique
Just enjoy your stay here, share some Photos, asked for a Critique and be prepare to accept it.
Marci San Diego 04-09-2009, 11:44 AM i agree on these suggestions:
1.) majority wins
2.) should have a "general theme"..
the game should be limited to newbies only (like us)... to keep us moving. haha
like the theme should be announced in the morning. and we noobs should post before the day ends. hehehehe
josaprimero 04-09-2009, 11:55 AM Im not saying this just because youre avatar looks hot...but WoooooW..:).seriously!? No editing?! Very nice.. can you please tell me the settings for this please!!!:)
hahaha!!!:) yes no editing, just added border outside the photo as not to affect the 18mm size of it..hehe..and also added watermark. that's it...check out my thread "my geometrical shots"
exif data canon rebel xs, shutter speed 1/350 sec, exposure program - manual, f -stop f3.5, aperture value f3.4, iso 400, focal leght 18.0mm

That's also cool..but as a newbie, I believe I dont yet have the right expertise on judging photos correctly...I realized from experience that no matter how many books and magazine and training videos and podcasts you have watched, listened to or read..you never really become that "good" with photgraphy that fast..talent is a big factor but experience is even bigger..I believe even veteran photographers learn still something new each time they do photo sessions. And that's the reason why I like people of experience to do the judging here..its like an amateur beauty contest compressed into a forum.:)
This is a celebration of a newbie's best to effort adjust his settings, wait for the right moment, sacrifice his gluthathione by staying out in the sun just to catch that great angle, or going into dirty and dangerous alleys and grabage dumps just to get that great human emotion, to make a great "photograph". And or snapshot ( if it looks cool..a.k.a. tsamba.hehehe ).
This is where the C&Cs end and appreciation begins. Requiring deadlines to post photos might lead to "pwede na shots" just to be able to post..which we do not like in this game because what we want here is your best EFFORTED shot (or tsamba.):)

What's your light source? flash or natural? White balance used? I think you should be disqualified here..you seem to be a pro already!hahaha:D By the way you still need one confirmation by an "authority" to be declared first winner.:)

that's unfair....disqualified?...i am not a pro....huhuhu
Arnel Ilagan 04-09-2009, 12:07 PM NOTE: No post production editing pls! Picture must be posted straight from the camera file.
Would photographers with Canon 5Ds have an advantage over those with Canon 1000Ds and point and shoots? Should we shoot in JPEG then if it is straight from camera? We all know that RAW needs post processing and it is not what you see on the camera display.
Marci San Diego 04-09-2009, 12:14 PM oh. i must correct myself. i mean the ENTRIES should be limited to newbies. :)
my opinion on the deadline part is that you're not required to submit a shot so you need not be rushed. if you can submit, then do. just to share to others what you have. the purpose of deadline is just to wrap up the entries. :)
just my suggestion though. :)

It doe'snt matter what type of camera was used..P&S or dslr as long as it looks good. if taken in raw..convert it to fine jpeg, no other adjustments just to be fair.:)

GeraldBARIA 04-09-2009, 01:06 PM yeah! post processing should be allowed. :)
Post processing is cool but..what we want here is efforted shots. Something you actually worked hard for framing, focusing, angling and dangling yourself almost looking stupid just to get the right angle and light drops. We want to give kudos to "effort" even if you're just a newbie.:)

post processing is (IMO) a part of digital photography. it's part of your efforts. you apply your artistic sense to it. PP draws out a lot of beauty in your shot. and one might want to learn it too as a newbie.
i'm only suggesting that let's not cross it out. using PP does not mean you don't give efforts in framing, dangling, focusing, angling, etc.... :)

Yes I agree editing does artistic work there too..and it eats up quite a lot of time to adjust things the way you want them and certain "looks" and special effects are only possible with pp that you can't do with the cam alone. We need a whole new thread to appreciate that side of photography effort. What we want here are shots like the egg picture of josa..that could qualify as my desktops wallpaper anytime.. it looks so polished..but there wasnt any pp done on it which makes it all the more amazing in my opinion.

2 things:
1. How do we define "newbie"?
2. I agree with some posters to allow PP just to enhance the image and not fix it. If you're shooting RAW, don't you need to adjust contrast, white balance, do colour correction, etc? We not are talking about blending images or adding some special effects. I thought part of creating an image is taking the shot after creating the final image in your mind?
abrahamdomingo 04-09-2009, 03:03 PM guy i see a simple game being too complicated. you cant really categorize newbies from others because anyone behind a computer can say the are noobs. dont limit your game to who can compete. categorize your sumbissions by camera equipment. accept on camera flashes. dont submit studio shots. so it would be fair to everyone. with regards to pp limit pp to curves, levels, dodging and burning and cropping. nothing else. this is my opinion. have fun with this guys. remember its a game.
arnoldabaya 04-09-2009, 03:08 PM PP should be allowed. for as long as it for adjusting the WB, color correction, etc. And of course for converting it in JPEG but keep it simple.
Let's just define newbie as a Freshman. One who is in to digital photography as hobby and has been doing it for less than a year or 2.
I still think the photo to post should revolve around a general theme just to put a little more challenge into the game.
cidestrada 04-09-2009, 03:48 PM wow!! this game is getting a little too complicated.
Princess Jarlyn Young 04-09-2009, 04:10 PM HI guys,

I think this is not appropriate, giving a young girl cigarette:)
GeraldBARIA 04-11-2009, 01:26 AM I think this is not appropriate, giving a young girl cigarette:)
I was buying at this sari sari store and i saw this little girl on the table holding this cigarrette. Her mother was playing pusoy with her kumares.. I think she's holding the cigs for her mom cos she was busy. I asked if I could take a picture of her cute kid. She said yes..the kid was happy enough that her photo was taken. Their parents saw the final shot..they all laughed and thought it was funny. So no, i did not orchestrate this shot...i just find it kyoot.:)

JonathanLazaro 04-13-2009, 12:14 AM I think the game is getting better, why don't we set some parameters? Like, the due date before announcing the winner, no editing (even cropping) just the file from the cam.. etc, can we set some parameters? And how can we say that they we are newbies?
GeraldBARIA 04-13-2009, 12:59 AM Yes..getting better photos indeed. Well I guess we can never really tell if one is a newbie or not..lets just leave that to personal honesty and conscience.
I don't want to put time limits because I believe time pressure limits creativity, I want us all to just do the best we can at making raw images in our cams and post it here whenever were ready.
About the declaration of winners, I would like to ask help from you guys to PM or email any authorities you know that are members of this forum to participate in judging the contestants...coz i really dont know any.:)
As for the other rules, please visit the last page (beginning )of this thread for the rules of the game. Keep on posting guys!:Grin::Grin:

i like this shot!:) the way you were able to capture the color of the sky is great. i'm also a newbie, but just some inputs.:)
1. Try to choose a specific subject, the house on the right can be removed.
2. You may want to crop the rocks below, although foreground is impt, too much can also ruin a photo.
aside from those, everything just is enlightening as sir gerald said.:)

GeraldBARIA 04-16-2009, 01:22 AM Just to get clear standards on what a "Newbie" is:
He/she have just been practising "creative" photography in 11 months 29 days or less.
And by "creative photography" I mean trying to do professional looking, artistics photographs..So if you have been the operator of tye family camera since you were in first year high school..that does'nt count. That's just "snapshoting" anyways.
Creative photography is when you start to really get into the knowledge of taking "photographs" not anymore "snapshots".:)

JonathanLazaro 04-16-2009, 09:27 AM Gerald, I think you should do some opening and closing per batch, before we upload for batch 3, you should announce the batch 2 winner, should start voting now so the next batch can participate.
David Tong 04-16-2009, 10:08 AM Hehe, I can attest that Sherwin isn't a pro and he falls into your criteria of <11mos creative shooting...
Just because someone has the talent doesn't disqualify them from being a newbie. That's why this "game" concept is pretty flawed from the get-go, your criteria and guidelines are too subjective.
kimchan 04-16-2009, 10:24 AM agree. if so....

Just because someone has the talent doesn't disqualify them from being a newbie. That's why this "game" concept is pretty flawed from the get-go, your criteria and guidelines are too subjective.
...and the rules keep changing as it goes along. (no designated judges now voting, no deadlines of entries, etc.) :)
arnoldabaya 04-16-2009, 12:16 PM It's a dynamic fun game. Rules are made up as we go. Here for batch 3.
btw, who won in batch 2?

maricrisfaderugao 04-16-2009, 02:39 PM Don't you think we should put a new thread for the new batch? It's quite flooded here. Just a suggestion..
Tok Paler 04-16-2009, 04:09 PM Just because they are newbie photos doesn't mean that you don't have to put too much effort or none at all into them...
case in point: that was my criterion for judging..
This photo made an impression when i asked one of my peers to judge the photos. She stated that there was an element of effort and timing into the photo, actually waiting for the kid to drop into the frame and compose it accordingly.
For me, there is just too much negative space. If it was me shooting that kid, i would have probably tried to compose it horizontally and put the kid on the upper thirds. The reflection on the sand would have made an interesting element if it was framed properly.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3544/3438012358_e13f41f48c.jpg
This photo is also one of my favorites among the batch. But because this forum and most probably the internet is littered with these dime-a-dozen photos of wide-eyed kids, i didn't pick it to be the winner. I think it was a nice touch shooting from above whether done intentionally or not, it brought out the highlights in kids eyes.
The nice tight frame brought the viewers attention to the kids eyes, but i think the other parts of the kid were cropped over zealously.
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/3176/890609b8bbb13a81c24f169.jpg
Which brings me to the winner...
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3537/3426243528_e908ea74dc.jpg
Although it's a bit to abstract for my taste (What is it supposed to be anyway? =b), i think this is the photo that had the most effort put into it. I think it shows in the way it is lit and the way the photographer was mindful of what to include in the frame.
I just have no clue what it should be or what it is trying to be? :D
And with that... I congratulate the winner Josa Primero :)

Thanks to the thread starter.
JonathanLazaro 04-16-2009, 07:03 PM The game is exciting but its confusing.. why not make a thread for the participants then after a specific time given by the thread host, the voting will start, any pictures that will be posted late will be not accepted, after announcing the winner on the thread, make another thread for the next batch. It's fun, If you want I will start a new thread/ game.
JeromeEsparagoza 04-16-2009, 07:35 PM Nice suggestion there Jonathan, I'm adding you as my flickr contact, newbie here as well.

And with that... I congratulate the winner Josa Primero :)[/quote]
yehey!!!:):):)....regarding your question on my photo. my teacher gave me an assignment a couple of months ago, which i posted here at critique forum entitled "My geometric inspired shots".
the objective of my assignment is for me to understand/master the principle of light and shadow. he wants me to capture geometry in everyday life. he wants to know how i perceive everyday life and how i interpret lifeless things. The objective is for me to try and see beyond common focal points... let geometry speak. he wants me to shoot but with geometry in mind.
need to produce certain number of images...
best geometry inspired images, and geometry inspired images with an egg. he wants me to interpret geometry using my wide angle lens.
rules....18mm "only"....no post processing allowed, no cropping...just play with light...
the entry i submitted here entitled egg in the net...whoooo.....super drained na me with my assignment...cerebral calisthenics....
i was just playing with the egg, then i saw a red cartolina, i cut it into strips then glued it(weave style) then played with it...then i got this chamba image....
whoooooooo....hope i was able to answer your question sir.

As Ive posted before, Im relying on everyone's "honesty" and "conscience" when they join here and call themselves a newbie,
so i don't really mind if this sherwin dude is already a pro or an actual 11month 29days or less old creative photoist:) as
long as his conscience permits him to post here, so be it. i actually even asked him to post a new one or the raw unedited
file of his entry.
@Rolando ballesteros
Yes additional rule details are being explored as the game goes on but i prefer not to use the term "changing"..its more of "evolving". Common, this is the first installment of this game..a Season 1,
of course it will not be perfect and that's how we perfect wonderful things in this world..with growth and constant adaptation. And having everyone of you guys interested in participating here makes
it even better by the day.:) i like how Mr.Arnold Abaya putted it.."dynamic". That's positive outlook..a very important attitude for us newbies to continue improving our craft in creative photography.

I will now be finalizing the entries for batch 3 on April 30. ( I decided to make it a twice in a month thing to enable everyone to do new shots and or to find the best one they had so far to be posted here. )
As a word of advice: Do not post just to be able to join..you're sure to loose to the photo above. Let's amp up the level guys..Josa's photo is on fiiiire!!! I'm trying everyday...but still can't.huhuhu:(

josaprimero 04-17-2009, 04:43 AM Hmmmm...bragging already. joke.:D:D:D
bragging already???...then joke....
definition of bragging
1.bragging - exhibiting self-importance; "big talk"
2.Bragging is when someone CONSTANTLY tells people about something they may have succeeded in
gerald...my advise to you...choose your words wisely...you starting to offend other people here in the forum...
you know what i mean.
marcifurung 04-17-2009, 07:44 AM Another try for me at this game.... fingers crossed

Josa....come on..It was a JOKE!:Grin::Grin: As I have said in the batch 2 summary post, I said there that the prize was:
1. The BMNPG Commemorative certificate ( now personalized with Avatar:Grin:)
2. BRAGGING RIGHTS.
So my joke about.."bragging already"..was a direct quote from youre 2nd prize.... I was merely joking that ITS GOOD THAT YOU'RE ALSO ALREADY ENJOYING YOUR 2ND PRIZE.:Grin::Grin:
Ms Josa I meant no harm...common....Im always on Joking mode here..this is a HAPPY thread...let's all be happy.:)
David Tong 04-17-2009, 10:21 AM Gerald: You must've noticed a trend by now, if a handful of people don't get the context of your "jokes" (in multiple threads, at that), you best choose your words more carefully before posting.

Raw unedited?
If that is the case, your first entry (http://www.flickr.com/photos/23128375@N02/3423535105) is disqualified too since it has been edited in Picasa... technically, it's not "straight from the camera".

Sir, I mentioned that the only post processing permitted is signature..that's the only thing I used Picasa for that pic:Grin:

Yeah...now I know how you feel sometimes when we over-react to your teachings.:)
If I could apologize to every single person that were offended by my insensitive jokes in this forum I WOULD... Hmmm..maybe I sould make a thread for people to post their hate mail for me..and i can apologize to every single one of them.hehehe Really now...I'm really APOLOGIZING TO ALL.

Browsing the first few pages... no mention of signatures or watermarks...
Searching for "signature"... hmmm nothing.
Browsing... Josa removed the watermark from her image.
Searching for "watermark"... aha! In the 10th page... post #98. Very convenient.

GeraldBARIA 04-17-2009, 05:45 PM The game is exciting but its confusing.. why not make a thread for the participants then after a specific time given by the thread host, the voting will start, any pictures that will be posted late will be not accepted, after announcing the winner on the thread, make another thread for the next batch. It's fun, If you want I will start a new thread/ game.
Mr jonathan, yeah Ive been considering this time limit thing..that's why we do the batch 1, batch 2...thingy now. I will be organizing entries every 15th and 30th of the month into batches and we will vote from there.:)
Mon Camara 04-17-2009, 08:46 PM rules are getting complicated already, have you noticed there are only few posting thier newbie pics here. this is supposed to be a newbie game, rules shouldn't be that dense. i'm just saying....
suggestion: stick to the thread's title, keep the discussion newbie-ish, so newcomers will not tend to just read and then skip posting their newbie pic, having said that, here's my new entry...and this will be under batch?

gilbertmalong 05-02-2009, 04:34 PM Been a long time since i opened DPP forum, it was blocked in the office (those really pesky ITs! :D hehe) and had a hard time also browsing the net because my work.
Anyway, kudos to the thread starter, this post is really fun. I just noticed that people here tend to complicate things. If the thread starter says no PP, others would questioned "how about watermarks, cropping, etc." then discussions of "what if's, why, you should..., but you said..etc." rises that it takes away the simple objective of what the thread starter wants to say.
... simple things are not bound to be complicated.
Also, congrats to Josa, your "bigtime" na pala here..hehe :Grin::Grin:"TWO TIME "Beat My Newbie Photo" Champion!
GeraldBARIA 05-05-2009, 10:25 AM Hey! I finally got an entry!hehehe It took me 20 shots to get this right. Man.. this horse is not friendly!!! GeraldBARIA 05-18-2009, 06:34 PM Just notice yesterday..Im actually a senior already!:) Which makes me eligible to judge!hehehe And the winner is my photo!hahaha. Just joking!
None of the real authorities are judging anymore (maybe because they all hate me.:) huhuhu). And the entries are still coming in...So Im thingking..since this is my thread, and I can do anything I want with it..and we newbies really love friendly competition such as this one...Why not make the judges us newbies themselves!
So NEW RULES ALERT!!!
New Winner choosing rule:
We get to vote on the entries for a given amout of time..Like a week.
I will specify the period on when the voting starts and ends.
I consolidate the votes ( dont worry I'll do the scouring and tallying and all that.) and announce the winner at the end of the period.
Actually anyone can vote..newbie or not!
This would make this friendly competition even more interactive and fun.
VOTING RULES:
1. You cannot vote for your own Photo!
2. Voting structure will be as such:
a. Photo you chose
b. Reason why?
3. When somebody re-battles against your vote (against the reason you posted )..its value is cancelled.
4.The highest number of vote wins!:)

Hang around some more, interact in the flesh with DPPers more often. Be there at DPP's 3rd Anniv event. Get to know in person those who you imply are the real authorities or those who you think may "hate" you.
One way to get back at them is to learn from them. After all, they may have blazed the trail for you.

Thanks for these kind words sir..I needed this.:) Actually I'm getting shy joining the eb's of some of the new groups here because of this reason.:(
When will this anniversary be?! I hope I get invited.:) I would love to meet all of us in person.:)
GeraldBARIA 05-18-2009, 07:40 PM Il start off the voting.:)
a. I choose this photo by Justin
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3365/3525807564_69f78ff71d.jpg
b.Reason: Composition, set up, lighting and pose all just outstanding. The beauty of the model's face was captured well, and the two colored dress is just stylish enough to make an impact but simple enough not to be a visual distraction. The vivid colors make it seem like it was adjusted in lightroom..so the camera exposure setting including the image optimization function was fully utilized. This photo is just great.

Gerald, you sport not a few rough edges there. But, hey, who's perfect?

maricrisfaderugao 05-18-2009, 09:13 PM My vote goes to..
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/4066/2996961635d5a56f7109.jpg
Reason: I love the lighting and color. It could almost be a movie poster for an action movie. I love the addition of the smoke. It gives more character on the subject and I also like the fact that there's a mystery vibe in it because the subject's face is not shown. It makes me create various stories and imagine different things when I look at this photo alone.
OliverReyes 05-18-2009, 10:42 PM http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/4066/2996961635d5a56f7109.jpg
I took a look at the entries many times and considered which is the best composed, captured, and storied. I had a hard time picking between Sherwin and Gary's entry. In the end, I kept coming back to this pic.
To add more to the pic's mystique, the space on the left looks as if the photographer wanted the viewer to contribute his own script. I'm playfully drawn to write my own... (enter Max Payne like voice here...)
"The briefing was precise. The monitor died and joined the darkness of the room in a mute gothic duet. I took a drag from the only thing that made me feel human these days. The smokes were my only freakin' respite. Now, I hold the cold metal of my piece... knowing that it'll make equally cold bodies. The Reaper probably hates me. I'm always making him work overtime."
Another vote for sherwin. :)

MaynardGonzales 05-22-2009, 01:42 PM I vote for Sherwin's entry. Excellent concept & execution.
David Tong 05-22-2009, 01:44 PM Sherwin's entry as well... from props to lighting, to styling, everything fits.
Ardiel Ross Topacio 05-22-2009, 05:57 PM my "ONE" goes to sherwin. i love the art showned here. the lighting and the timing.... at first i thought it was the punisher
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3223/2996961635_d5a56f7109.jpg
but i also want to give credit to justine's. using a D40 and not sure if it's a kit lens, not also sure if he uses flash or other lights except from one on the window. like what others said the saturation, lighting is good, straight out from a D40 this one is really good for "ME"

im also a newbie, actually less than 2 months old using a dslr...hpoe what im saying makes sense:D and i hope i can dig something to compete here...
Ardiel Ross Topacio 05-22-2009, 06:08 PM Now my entry...
There's not much story in this shot. This was just some test shots i done after making my DIY lightbox found in this site. hehe... kaso this is the best un-PPed shot ko ata :D

Nikon D60 with 18-55mm kit lens
Shutter: 1.3 sec
Aperture: 5.6
Exposure: 0EV
Shutter: Off
Focal Length: 55mm
RAW-Jpeg
PP done in photoshop:
Change resolution from 300 to 60 DPI
Resized height to 650px at width to 435px
Nothing follows
(I use this as my personal standard size for my images when uploading on the web)
One question to the thread starter, pede ba panoramas? aside from stitching then cropping, no other PPs done.
GeraldBARIA 05-22-2009, 07:14 PM Panorama's are permitted...stitched but..no cropping!:)
Ardiel Ross Topacio 05-22-2009, 09:50 PM Panorama's are permitted...stitched but..no cropping!:)
hehe i think good point on the cropping part...i think it would be better if ung kukunan for panorama is good enough for stitching without losing too much valuable pixels..and hindi lahat iaasa sa photo stitching software hehe...
danpagulayan 05-22-2009, 10:01 PM Panorama's are permitted...stitched but..no cropping!:)
hehehe, Gerald. In most cases (in my case, all cases), there is a need to crop. Otherwise, stitched images would show jagged outlines.
Of course, there are cams out there (like a number of P&S models) that can do in-camera stitching. It may seem to the user that no cropping is involved, but I am almost sure that cropping is done in-camera, as well). There may be dslrs that can do the trick, but I know of none (at least not in the Nikon dslrs).
Try it with your dslr...
GeraldBARIA 05-22-2009, 10:12 PM I've only tried this panorama shot using my sony erricson phone..there's guide that you have to follow in which the camera automatically takes the shot when you get to point the viewfinder in the right position relative to the previous photo taken. I really have no idea how this is done using stitching software.:)
Yes sir..I would try this using my dslr..

same in my case that all my panoramas are cropped, big time hehe.... but i think if we shot at our best, at least we can minimize the cropping a little bit. using photoshop's photomerge, even when you're a little off track, it will still be stitched... although my though on the panorama is still good composition is present, good angles and framing, its just you're framing big time...
let this photos be my words...
after stitching without cropping:

after cropping:

no adjustments made aside from stitching and cropping...i still like the idea of minimizing the crops though...

yup kit lens and straight out of the d40. the window was the only light source but we had a reflector somewhere if i remember correctly. it's not obvious though so i think it was not properly in place yet when i took the photo. there was another photographer taking pictures. she was the one leading the model.
thanks to everyone who appreciated the photo :)
David Tong 05-22-2009, 11:21 PM It was a great shot nonetheless, Justin... :) You should be proud. :)

ronie.ablan 05-29-2009, 12:29 AM guys, how much PP is allowed for entries?
i would like to join next time, but it seems that most of my pics were post processed way too much compared to the entries i've seen so far from this contest...
GeraldBARIA 05-29-2009, 11:16 AM Sir ronnie, only signature and raw - JPEG conversion is allowed as far as pp is concerned.
ronie.ablan 05-29-2009, 12:36 PM sir gerald, so cropping, saturation and contrast adjustment, sharpening the image, and monochrome conversion is not allowed?
GeraldBARIA 05-29-2009, 01:39 PM Yes Sir...This is a game for mastering of the camera by a newbie..so after the shot is made..no image manipulation is allowed. :)
GeraldBARIA 05-29-2009, 01:42 PM I decided to extend the deadline for Batch 2 until June 15 11:59pm. And the voting from June 16,12:00am till June 23 8:00pm. So this will now be a monthly event..3 weeks for posting entries..1 week for voting winners. I believe that will be enough time for us not to rush our entries just to meet the deadline. :)
Ardiel Ross Topacio 05-29-2009, 02:37 PM congrats to sherwin!!!
ronie.ablan 05-29-2009, 05:47 PM thanks sir gerald for the info :)
