i used its 1998 ancestor before as a startup camera. the pictures were great. it basically has the dslr features you can play around with. it has a little trouble though with low light conditions, but i learned a lot in experimenting with the functions before i got a dslr.

i looked into the s9500 early this year and it costed as much as a nikon d50 body. and since i already practiced on its 1998 ancestor, i opted to graduate to a real dslr by getting the d50 body and borrowing lenses from nikon user friends heheh... over all i think its still a good camera though the unchangeable lense may limit your creativity after some time if you're thinking of going deep into photography...

just curious, what is the model of it's 1998 ancestor?

anyway, my friend says that its night capabilities improve with iso1600 having acceptable noise level, i have yet to try though.. ^_^

but of course, given that it costs as much a d50, i'd suggest that you get the d50, though you are limited to a 18-55 lens (which i don't think is really limiting since with my s3 the only time i'm looking for a better lens if i can't go near my subject)... :D

but of course, the s9500 is smaller and easy to carry along, and less suspicous... :D

the s9500 is a good camera with looks & features that will make you forget that it is not a real DSLR. the 28-300mm lens is a plus factor. So far, pictures taken in well lit conditions (outdoors or studio) are great.

however, i'm having trouble with its focusing in lowlight conditions. its AF feature doesn't focus that fast (e.g. during concerts, fashion shows). i'm not happy either with its ISO800 to 1600 noise level.

its a good camera. however if you're going into photography better you'll be limited with this camera. I guess this camera is still a great start :)
