View Full Version : Team Nikon U.S.A.
Nick_Espino 11-14-2006, 12:05 AM If anyone in U.S.A. (and perhaps Canada) is interested in joining a Filipino Nikon Users Group, please email me with your name, city and state….

I’m just spitballing for now, the main objective or idea is to build a network of Filipino Nikon users and perhaps use as a resource for, but not limited to, the following:
(i) Job Sourcing. Perhaps, you need a photo assistant for an assignment; need a last minute replacement because you can’t make a prior commitment (e.g., you got sick the day of a wedding shoot) and job referrals. In the last few weeks I had to turn down a restaurant publicity shoot in favor of another job and also turned down a model portfolio work because, well, that’s not what I do. I passed the jobs to other photogs I know. All things being equal, I’d rather have a fellow Pinoy get a first crack at these assignments.
(ii) Referrals for models, studio, shops, etc. in your city.
(iii) Local Buddy. Hook up with a local when you’re traveling to their city, and maybe they can point us to the right places to shoot, outside of the usual tourist traps. Maybe they can even lend us equipment (or studio!), saving us from going through airport security with a bazooka-like lenses.
(iv) Host our Philippine-based photographers when they visit your city.
(v) Learn from each other, either through photo trips, tutorials, etc. (ask questions like, “Pare, can you walk me through on making ice cream out of Crisco so it won’t melt under hot lights?” ) :)
(vi) The “club” will try to arrange for discounts at various establishments (camera shops, studio, etc.)
…. Just some of the stuff I thought of while stuck in traffic this morning.
Now, who wants to develop a secret handshake for this club? :D
Pocholo Ignacio 11-14-2006, 12:15 AM Hmm... Mike Lopez, regional director for Nikon USA has a Nikon Professional group. Pretty much the same as "The One" recently launched here in the Phils. They've got all the goodies already - jackets / caps / and other apparel. Major discounts up to 30% for pros plus a whole bunch of other perks / priority access and media passes. It was formed early 90's and last I spoke to him was about a year ago. It's still active - very active actually so I don't know how this will affect your propsoal...might be some problems with the name. Either way, can I join this? We have services there as well (LA): Orange County, Burbank, Sherman Oaks.
zandy_marantal 11-14-2006, 12:19 AM Sounds like a plan Nick.
I for one would be willing to assist you guys just to get a feel on how it's like to do a professional shoot.
Will email my info shortly.

I just realized we're in the porn capital! Hahaha!!!

Pocholo, you'll definitely be a good resource for models that specialize in, uhm, extreme glamour.
I was actually a member of NPS (Nikon Pro Services) for a number of years, but haven't renewed in the last 2 years. Unlike NPS, my proposal is strictly for Filipino Nikon users, both professionals and serious hobbyists.
As for your concern about problem with the name, I'm guessing you are referring to the use of the word "Nikon". That shouldn't be an issue. We already filed for trademarks at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for "Club Nikon" and "Team Nikon", and all derivations (".org", ".com", "group", etc.), all of which are available at time of filing.
Earl Gonzalez 11-14-2006, 01:14 AM Nick E.'s on the move already! :)
Louieescobar 11-14-2006, 02:29 AM This is a good idea Nick. I'm from Virginia.
Niko Villegas 11-14-2006, 04:31 AM tell me more on this one hehehe Im from ABQ, NM, USA :)
Marco_Ingco 11-14-2006, 04:52 AM Hi Nick. This is a great initiative and I applaud you for this move. I used to live in Atlanta before I was moved here to NJ due to job reasons.
Anyway, I'll email you my info shortly...
Nick_Espino 11-14-2006, 08:09 AM Thanks, Marco.
Isn't Atlanta just the most horrible city to shoot landscape with all the exposed/hanging electric wires?

Man you're fast! How can we help? Err... without the extreme glamour models :D I'll forward your info to my partner Louis. He's the one handling the projects there.
Nick_Espino 11-14-2006, 08:47 PM Thanks, Pocholo.
Next step is to put together a club portal a la ClubEOS but better
Do you guys know of a web designer/developer? Also email me any ideas you may have. Thanks.

Okay I just can't keep it to myself anymore...
November, 2005 I was there to do some shoots for a publicity stint etc... I made some contacts and of course gave my card. As soon as I got back to the aprtment I received 3 emails from "agencies" that were asking for rates and if I could come up with a concept for them. I asked for zeds and ... well, I had free nudes in my box, taken with utmost distaste! I couldn't bring myself to accept inspite of the very tempting pay... perhaps if they looked like Kate B. I wouldn't think twice! I told my father in-law about it - since he's a photographer too and he called me an idiot for declining! Hahaha! There's just something about THE VALLEYS!:D:D:D - sorry Nick, this is off topic. But I did send you an email.
Nick_Espino 11-15-2006, 11:29 PM Prague! That's the new capital. I think I read that somewhere.
Pocholo, thanks for the email. I already got in touch with Mike.
Jerry, I'll be in touch when things get final and thanks for the offer.
Marco_Ingco 11-15-2006, 11:53 PM Thanks, Marco.

Can't agree with you more. But cost of living there beats NJ anytime. I could have bought a big single family house there for the amount of money I spent on my townhouse here...:(
Tell me how I could help. I am a Java/J2EE/JSP programmer by day and I also know some PHP.
zandy_marantal 11-16-2006, 01:58 AM I think using CMS such as PostNuke would be the way to go. Little to no coding required but is still very much customizable. Most hosting sites already offer that.
HTH
Nick_Espino 11-16-2006, 02:15 AM Zandy, what's a CMS? Sorry, but I'm a technoidiot. :D
Marco_Ingco 11-16-2006, 02:55 AM Zandy, what's a CMS? Sorry, but I'm a technoidiot. :D
I'm not Zandy but CMS is (as taken from Wikipedia)
A content management system (CMS) is a computer software system for organizing and facilitating collaborative creation of documents and other content. A content management system is often a web application used for creating and managing websites and web content. Alternatively, content management systems (CMS) can also be used for storing and publishing documentation such as operators' manuals, technical manuals, sales guides, etc. There are many open-source and proprietary CMS solutions available, which is in fact true for most systems of any kind. The market for content management systems is quite fragmented.
zandy_marantal 11-16-2006, 05:13 AM It's stands for Content Management System. It's a set of scripts(and its database)that you deploy on a webserver. This makes up the framework of the site. You do your configuration via browser by accessing some form of a control panel. The DPP site is an example of a CMS implementation.

It's something like e.g. CPanel. :)
