im looking at this leica c lux 1 point and shoot. looks sweet and considering it. will need an ultra compact point and shoot when the Dlsr is too bulky to take. its basically a re-badged panasonic. what do you guys think?

while i think that red badge is beautiful i don't think it's worts an extra $200. bhphoto has the c lux listed at $495 and panasonic lumix Fx9 is at $299. unless i'm missing something between the 2 models.

If memory serves me right, the Panasonic counterpart is the LX1. Price here is around P30-35k. At 8.4 mega pixels, and other loads of features, it is one of the best point-and-shoot in the markets. I believe you can even shoot RAW with this model. Only serious drawback is noise. Anything above 200 may need Noise Ninja.

oops, my bad. i took the fx9 for comparison since it's also a 6mp cam.
regarding noise, a friend mentioned it had something to do with the smaller sensor compared to those of DSLRs. is this accurate?

That red badge really makes a point and shoot look so much nicer. :Grin:

Cramming more pixels into a small sensor results in increased noise. I believe not all of the photosites pick up light and detail and when they don't, you get noise. This is probably why cell phones, even with their now 3 mega pixel cameras, still take junk photos. How big a sensor can you cram into a cell phone? Medium format digital back is the best, but not all of us can afford this option. Good news is that it seems that the mega pixel race is almost over and manufacturers are now focusing on improving features such as image stablization and noise reduction.

I actually considered getting that Leica in HK last month kaya lang when I thought about it sayang lang pera ko if i'll get it just for the brand. I just bought other stuff for my 20D. As the saying goes, its not the pana (arrow), but the injun!

If you want a useful P&S as a carry around cam, i strongly suggest a Fuji F10/11 or F30 which has very good noise control even at ISO 800. The F30 goes up to 3200 but noise is discernible from 1600-3200. Not so many DSLRs can even get good reults at ISO400-800 and certainly nothing in the P&S can do good even at 400. The times that i don carry my DSLR is when I'm in mostly nightime events and using a flash is not allowed, my F30 comes in handy because i can shoot and get acceptable images. Current price is US$ 339

@Carlo
Just like some friends(from other hobby) and I would commonly say... If you can afford it and can't stop thinking about it, get it!
