View Full Version : Cleaning
Marton_Benitez 06-12-2006, 02:43 AM Hi,
Im just wondering where can I have my D70 cleaned :) Unfortunately my sensor is dirty and I really hate it when dirt pops out on the picture in places where I can't clone it out. :( I do have a blower, but I think I need a more extensive job and I don't think I'd like to risk swabbing (Correct term?) It myself. Thanks in advance :) Any inputs would be much appreciated
Louie Aguinaldo 06-12-2006, 08:39 AM I've been doing dry cleaning of sensors for a lot of photographers. I use the sensor brush which is very effective. Oh, I do it for free by the way. You'll have to visit me at DPI Photography Center. The catch though is to catch me when I'm there and not elsewhere on a shoot. So just contact me so we can set a time to meet up.
tj_parpan 06-12-2006, 09:00 AM Louie has been kind enough to offer dry cleaning to photogs for the longest time, even on the phphoto list. Go for it Marton!
I use the sensor brush on my D70 and D200 on a regular basis (which is whenever a speck of dust appears) and it's easy to use and efficient.
dindin_lagdameo 06-12-2006, 02:01 PM Hi Louie,
May I have my D70 cleaned? (didn't know that you did this for free... thanks in advance.) My hubby (your friend) send his regards. ;-)
Hi guys,
I know someone else who can clean for you, but it costs P1200. Jessie Aberia at Columbia Cubao does a good job.
Louie Aguinaldo 06-12-2006, 03:12 PM Sure just contact me 09175295706 to set a sched. Dindin kindly send Quito my regards.
Marton_Benitez 06-12-2006, 09:26 PM Wow! :) Thank you sir. That's very kind! But i'd hate to trouble you though. Perhaps you could just point me in the direction where i could get a sensor brush :) Thanks again
Louie Aguinaldo 06-12-2006, 09:49 PM Don't know if anyone sells it here. I ordered from visibledust.com. Its quite expensive though, you'll end up spending over a hundred dollars.
rosalie_gomez 06-12-2006, 10:21 PM I know Columbia doesn't charge for the 1st cleaning as long as your camera is still under warranty. :)
john_villavicencio 06-12-2006, 10:46 PM has anybody tried the wet cleaning solutions?
Louie Aguinaldo 06-12-2006, 10:55 PM The most popular wet cleaning solution is using Eclipse Fluid with the costly sensor swabs. They work ok but once you start using them, it seems that you end up needing to use them more and more.
Over a year ago, I encountered a situation wherein no matter how many times I used the Eclipse fluid with the sensor swabs, some spots on my sensor just wouldn't come off. Plus, other dust present just get moved around.
I was exasperated as I had tried cleaning my sensor 13 times and there was still some nasty spots.
I then turned to visibledust.com's products which were new at that time but had gotten rave reviews from digital photography sites.
I tried "sensor clean", visibledust.com's wet cleaning fluid. Wow, with one sweep, the spots that eclipse could not remove were gone in an instant. I followed up with 2 sweeps of the sensor brush and the sensor was spotless.
Of course, wet cleaning carries a bigger risk. One thing though about Eclipse is that if you put a bit too much, it leaves smears on the sensor. Sensor clean is much less prone to leaving smears.
Visibledust.com has come up with 2 new wet cleaning solutions tailor made for specific problems ("smear away" and "Vdust formula"). I just ordered them but haven't had the chance to try them out yet.
tj_parpan 06-12-2006, 11:10 PM has anybody tried the wet cleaning solutions?
I initially used pecpads, eclipse, and a home-made spatula swab. It takes a lot of nerve to do it the first time, but I got the hang of it. But the set-up time takes too long and the amount of fluid has to be just right so you don't end up with smear marks, as Louie mentioned. It works, but I find the sensor brush method the easiest and most efficient so far.
john_villavicencio 06-12-2006, 11:19 PM thanks for the input guys... i just recently tried out using the eclipse + sensorswab combo and it seemed to do the trick for me anyway. i'll check out the visibledust solution you've mentioned louie. thanks a bunch!

rosalie_gomez 06-30-2006, 08:41 AM @dindin
I'm sure you can wait for it. Cleaning with the sensor brush is very quick. TJ will be doing it tonight in the EB so you can see for yourself. :)
dodie_legaspi 06-30-2006, 08:43 AM YES I coudnt agree more w TJ. Loui has been so kind to me as well.I got my d70 cleaned for free.

sure! very fast. cleaning itself is not even 2 minutes. 2 minutes more to check if we removed the dust.
edlin_roguel 06-30-2006, 02:36 PM Sir Louie,
Is you free sensor cleaning service open for canon users too?
dave_deluria 06-30-2006, 03:24 PM I clean my own sensor now as well. I just don't have the guts to clean somebody else's camera for now. I use a home made spatula + pecpads + eclipse. I have encountered the same issues as Louie having gone through 13 pads to get rid of stubborn spots on the sensor, but I think it's the lubrication from the mechanical shutter assembly. I've managed to clean it as well and so far, I've been able to get it done faster now.
Louie Aguinaldo 07-01-2006, 01:17 AM Sir Louie,
Is you free sensor cleaning service open for canon users too?
Yes, for any fellow lovers of photography!
dindin_lagdameo 07-01-2006, 01:40 PM thanks, louie... if you're free on monday, i can maybe swing by... will text you... thanks in advance!
tony_santos 08-31-2006, 09:00 PM Yes, for any fellow lovers of photography!

Janis Nuņez 03-20-2008, 12:28 PM Sir Louie:
Do you clean CCDs too? I brought mine to Columbia Mega mall and they told me it can't be cleaned anymore. They advised me to bring it to Columbia QC head office for a CCD replacement instead. It's not that I don't trust Mang Mandy, it's just that I need a 2nd opinion po.
Im just a hobbyist sir, I have the slightest idea of what happened to my dad's camera. Please help me. I would be more than willing to meet you at your most convenient time po.
Thanks :)
Marton_Benitez 03-20-2008, 01:37 PM They advised me to bring it to Columbia QC head office for a CCD replacement instead.
 Replace?!
If its just sensor dust, it can be cleaned.
Dave Villaruel 03-21-2008, 09:50 PM I hope Sir Louie will visit this thread soon. Can I bring my cam to you? I find it awkward if I will just text you, dyahe eh. Almost 2 years ago pa yung free offer. Heheheh!
Janis Nuņez 03-21-2008, 11:15 PM  Replace?!

They tried, but unfortunately, it can't be cleaned, that's according to Manong Mandy of Columbia Megamall :(

That's dirt on the pentaprism, i hope you haven't tried to wipe the mirror (the one under the pentaprism), your not supposed to do that btw.
With regard to the dir, try using a blower to remove them. This happened to me before, took a while before it got removed.
Doesn't really affect picture quality if dust is on the pentaprism.
jaybeelanuza 03-27-2008, 11:58 PM I have tried the Arctic Butterfly yesterday, did not wipe my sensor clean even after ten passes. Maybe the dusts I got are welded dust. Well, lets see what the wet cleaning can do. Here are the cleaners I have already tried, Giottos Rocket blower, then arctic butterfly 724, then Lenspen Sensor Klear, Tonight I will try the last resort, Eclipse E2. I am now thinking that it is better to go straight to the wet cleaning method than try the dry methods and end up wasting time.
Rolando Avecilla 03-28-2008, 12:51 AM Errr... Cardinal, that is not the mirror. That is the focusing screen. Do not ever wipe these parts, they can be scratched easily.
@Christian, that is not the pentaprism. :D

unfortunately i did. is there a remedy? or just a lifetime of dirt being stuck at the back of my "focusing mirror"?, my body still has warranty,i tried to ask the cdsc certified seller of my cam and got me frustrated to be waiting for 3 weeks for the cleaning!?, if i take this body to quiapo i will pay around 1k? but ill wait while they clean it. i also see dirt spots at f16 and above apperture.
any suggestions?
Rolando Avecilla 03-28-2008, 01:44 PM FORGET QUIAPO!!!
Your camera is under warranty, bring it to CDSC, they have the right tools, equipment and environment to fix your camera. I'd rather wait 3 weeks than to have my camera opened with a can opener. (figuratively speaking) :D
The spots you see at f/16 and higher are on the sensor. CDSC can clean it too.

sensor cleaning for columbia megamall has a different price with columbia in cubao. I called columbia cubao and they told me its 1,250 for OOW or grey units while I asked at megamall personally they told me its 2k+ :BlackEye:
arnoldcruz 04-11-2008, 10:47 AM I'm sad that my D40 which is just several months old already had something somewhere inside. It shows at f/22 and still noticeable at other stops.
I found this link (on a Microsoft website, by the way) but I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to do it, as I have CDSC warranty anyway.

Amiel De Ocampo 04-11-2008, 09:34 PM too bad sir louie is out of town doing a shoot.. i'll just wait for him I also need his expert opinion about this dust particles not sure if it's the sensor or the lens
