Its okay for now but I believe we should set up a section in the Gallery for monochrome. I'll be talking to Nino Pasamonte to set this up. Once it is, we'll move the photos over there.

I love this image. In the Philippines Arnel? I guess not. Have you ever tried toning this image maybe a little sepia? I bet it would rock!

@ Gabriel
Sepia would make it lighter. I wanted to preserve the tones in the highlights but increase the d range in the shadows. Selenium toning of traditional silver gelatin prints would do the trick. :)

While I like the child's expression, I wonder what you did to the eyes. He kind of looks possessed. I seem to notice this effect on some of the galleries here. It seems many are fond of oversharpening. If you look at those Pinatubo children pictures they all look seriously oversharpened. In fact, many don't look photographic at all, more like a comic rather than a photograph.
I'm not trying to be critical here but just wanted to say that I see a trend happening from some of the photographers in this forum. I guess I'm kinda old school.

Hi Lisa, don't be intimidated to post here in DPP. This forum has evolved to something more of a caring community than a place of bashing and unfair criticism... :)
Anyway, looking at your photos, I think that you are off to a good start... Keep on shooting so you develop that keen eye and don't hessitate to ask around if you need any assistance... Goodluck! :)
lisa_llarena 11-03-2006, 08:08 PM thanks, earl. :) it's really scary showing your photos for the first time. any suggestions on how to make them better? (what am i doing wrong? is it the way i shoot, what i shoot, what i shoot with, or how i edit? or all of the above?) my images seem to lack a certain kick... i can't put it into words, really. it's like drinking light beer. i don't think they're necessarily bad but just that they're a bit, for lack of a better word, blah. and the thing is i don't know enough yet to know why exactly.

Lisa, I know what you mean... Actually that punch you're referring to is something maybe conversion or post processing related... Do you have the same problem with your coloured photos as well? :)

hi lisa, i know what you mean... i'm a newbie as well... i also feel that my images lacks that certain ommghff! and im still not sure what it is thats missing but i try to listen and learn from the masters here at DPP to improve at this craft...
criticism will always be there its just gonna be a matter of how you treat them... as for me i always treat them as a way to improve...
dont worry there are always guyz like Papi Earl that are always ready to lend a helping hand... :)
so just post your pics! regardless of the comments... learn from them...

i never really thought about that. hahaha. i suppose? it's just that i never cared much for the coloured ones. my heart's always belonged to black & white. hopefully with time, i'll get the hang of it.

mmmmmm... Try this, it's not a solid rule however, I have discovered over time that a well exposed high contrast and colour saturated image will usually yield a good B&W straight forward conversion. :)

thing is, i shoot in b&w. i check the histograms when i'm shooting and i usually bracket to be sure. it looks damn spiffy in my lcd too and then it gets lost in transit somehow. :D i'm sure it doesn't help that i can't shoot RAW. i think there's something i do post processing that screws it all up. is it better to shoot color and just convert in photoshop later on?

we were in the same group (philweavers) and i was chatting with them in irc. diwa was my predecessor from my former office and we met with the other 3d guys and web designers. small world indeed. :)
migsguerrero 11-14-2006, 09:48 PM Ah so philweavers ka pala! hehehe... heard a lot about that group. What ever happened to Halfproject? Do you now floyd? I think he's there in dubai too, not sure what company though. Any how good to know we lurk around the same industry.

This is awesome Mike! This is probably the best monochrome portrait I've seen in a long while. That gaze is really something. I'm guessing you used a 50mm for this.

Mon Corpuz 11-20-2006, 12:26 PM This will be my first monochrome post-production. I used to love black and white way back in the atelier years and its uncomfortably painstaking for me to digitaly unsaturate my picture. Here it is anyway. Would love to hear you comments and suggestions.
