Good day everyone.

I'm kinda confused as to which forum will I be posting this but since this thread is more Sigma-ish than Canon-ish, I'll probably post it here.

Hopefully, I'll be getting a 450D for my graduation. I want a lens setup with a good zoom range and at f2.8. Naturally, I'd go for the EF-S 17-55 mm f2.8 IS USM and EF 70-200 mm f2.8/L IS USM combo. Unfortunately, I'm a photographer on a budget and the idea of shelling out 46k just for the 17-55 is kinda farfetched (unless I win the lottery or cry in front of Willie Revillame hehehe).

I've been checking out Sigma and lo and behold, they do have lenses which I'm looking for namely the 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC Macro HSM and the APO 70-200mm F2.8 II EX DG MACRO HSM. Both of them don't have image stabilizers as with the Canon but the prices were like 50% less than the Canons.

I would just like to ask if its worth buying these lenses or if its better to just save up for the Canon glass. I would also like to ask how these two lenses compare with their Canon counterparts.

Thank you very much.

The question is can you wait? Are you in a buying mode of canon lenses in the future?:)

Well, I won't be in a buy Canon lens mode in the future hehehe. But if its better to just save up for Canon glass then why not. I just want to make sure that what I'm buying is worth every peso.

Another question is, what field of photography are you into? :)

Canon lenses, especially the great ones (L lenses) have higher re-sale value than 3rd party ones, in case you plan to sell them in the future.

Umm...I'm more into outdoor photography. I also like shooting night scenes.

I probably won't be selling them in the future but thanks for shedding light on the resale value.

Honestly it depends on you and what you need right now. In terms of image quality Canon glass would be above Sigma esp in these two instances. The IS feature also is a huge advantage.

So here it is... Do you need these lenses NOW? If you do need it now and the budget only permits SIGMA glass then by all means get the SIGMA glass. If you don't need them ASAP and if you can wait, get the Canon lenses.
