Hey I have a couple of friends who go to USF but they graduated already last June. Is Lorenzo still there?

Hmm, that's a familiar name. What's his last name so I can ask my cousin? (My cousin graduated from USF last year or a couple of years back and she has a friend named Lorenzo). :)

Hahaha everybody knows Lorenzo! I think his last name is Eduvalla. I have two friends back in Pinas na after studying at USF (aka University of Spoiled Filipinos...kidding) Cereb Gregorio and Rocky Hernandez.

Haha, I've heard of that acronym. I'm just an exchange student here though, gonna be back in December. :)

Cereb is a familiar name too. Hmm, maybe you're my cousin's batchmate? Her name is Tricia Tiutan.

Thank you. Yup, I was lucky enough to be courtside.

Hmmm, I would say that lighting was not that good since I had to boost my ISO to 1600 on a Sigma 2.8 on Tv mode to get a neutral exposure.

that's great. don't knock the lighting. last season, the uaap had the volleyball tournament at UP CHK. we were hard pressed to get a decent shot at 2.8 at that venue. sometimes i even used a 50 1.8 out of frustration.

RIGHT!!! Tricia was my classmate in ICA! and Cereb, my best friend, was her room mate during Freshman year.

The last time I saw her was last June when she was in town for a couple of weeks. Is she still studying for the board? How come Trixie is in Notre Dame and not in USF? oh well hi to Tricia!

that's great. how i wish uaap venues for volleyball were lit that way.

I'm from Ateneo and your name sounds familiar. (Ateneo Sports Shooters?) Oh, I thought that was bad lighting already. How are the conditions in Araneta for basketball and the venues for volleyball? 2.8 will still be underexposed? Btw, my shutterspeed was 1/640.

Wow! It's a small world indeed! Trixie is now in USF as a sophomore; she transferred from Notre Dame na. :) I will send your hellos, called Trixie now (I don't have Tricia's number) but she wasn't picking up. Will try again later.

yup. i'm a shooter along with tj and the gang.

araneta is ok. 2.8 works well, you can even step it down a bit more for some of the slower action.

volleyball venues are tougher. last year the venue was CHK. CHK has poor overhead lighting, old translucent roofing that let a little light through, and you had light coming in from the side. this year i think the lady's volleyball tournament will be in rizal (still dark but since the games will be televised, the tv crew will probably bring in more lighting) while the men's tourney will be in blue eagle gym.

Oh okay, great photos you guys have. I'm a fan.

I see, I see. Thanks for the information Nolan. This year does sound a tad more optimistic for photographers, yahoo. :)

Very good action shots, Fidel. I particularly like the shots of the jump serve and blocking — you can see the effort in their faces. Very clean shots at ISO1600. And the girls were talking about you!

No. 16: What is that guy doing here?!
No. 17: Oh, I think he's cute...
No. 11: [Rolls her shorts up] Me thinks so too...

No. 6: No way, he's bald!
No. 12 and No. 3 to No.6: Angela! Be gentle, he's just a freshman.
No. 4: I will definitely meet him later...

Man on the bleacher, top left: Lucky bas***rd. I will kill you later.

Great set, Fidel. As Nolan said, good coliseum lighting counts a lot. If you still get great exposure at 1/640, the lighting must be great (compared to CHK of course). Keep on shooting, Fidel!

Hi Fidel. How is the performance of the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 on the 20D? Was the 24-70 range enough for indoor volleyball? I was told that 85mm @ 1.8 was solid for indoor volley. My apprehension is really flexibility in focal lengths. I guess 24-70 would give you more options than a prime....but, on the other hand, prime lenses do give sharper images. What are your thoughts?

Hello Leni.

Hmm, I have to say that I have not tried a prime lens with my 20D so I would not know any differences in sharpness with the Sigma.

In my experience shooting volleyball on this single occasion, I was lucky enough to be seated courtside. I think I can say that the 24-70 was good for shots wherein I wanted to capture the full body of the player to show "hang time" and if they were close enough, a half-body shot. However, I felt that with the 24-70, I could not do "sports portraits" or capture the action closely on the far side of the court (unless I cropped the image but I would be sacrificing resolution and detail). As for the performance of the 20D with the 24-70, I think that autofocus was fast enough and heft was alright. Still, I did not have another lens to compare it with so I'm not fully sure.

I'm an amateur though so please take my comments with a grain of salt. :)

If I had the money, I'd have two bodies: one with the 24-70 and one with a 135 f2 prime or a 70-200 zoom.

Hope this helps. :)

dre, why "lucky enough"? aren't you studying there? :-) ... ows, sorry, i haven't read the exchange student part. :-)

usually this is common light set-up of school gyms. here in riyadh, we have high school basketball tournament every year. we have suggested the administrator of the school to add more bulbs onto their ceilings. :-)

I guess I was lucky since here in Manila, courtside seats usually go to people with tons of connections... :)

Hope your admins add more bulbs. :D
