anybody knows what this mean?

Lenses: AF-S (internal motor) lenses only. Won't focus with older (or current, brand-new non-AF-S) AF lenses.

Autofocus does not work with the older screw-type AF lenses but on AF-S lenses only.

It means they did not put a focus motor on the body to keep the cost down so only lenses with built in motors will work.

yes of course its goodbye. Manufacturers are re-doing everything again. They don't want people to be using old lenses since they dont have earnings with this.

DSLRs are put into marketing by manufacturers to sell lens. Sooner they will no longer support old lenses as they need to put into market new lenses.

Its excellent marketing. Poor DSLR buyers trapped into this marketing plan. :)

I guess current DSLR owners who do not need to upgrade their bodies will stick with their current ones for a long time, hearing this... Especially ones who have invested on lenses...

yes. DSLRs are a way for manufacturers to continue to be alive despite a saturation in the digital camera field (the megapixel race has ended). They need to survive.

Manufacturers dont earn by selling DSLR bodies. They earn by selling lenses. And it does not make sense to a business point of view for DSLR buyers to be using old lenses. The marketing plan has started. First the olympus 4/3 system new lens, now nikon with the d40, wait for canon release their own version of new lens only support. That is why manufacturers feed consumers with kit lens, to make sure they buy lens.

Anywhich way, old DSLR body owners will not get the benefit of more efficient chips and smaller bodies, also of live preview and video recording in the future DSLR bodies, but this in exchange for buying new lenses. Excellent marketing!

before i begin, let me just ask everyone if the release of a d40 has been confirmed? as it is i think the d40 is still largely a rumor. so maybe we should take the discussion with a grain of salt.

anyway for discussion's sake, i think that the d40 is not intended to be in the same category as the d50, d70/d70s, d80, d100, d200, etc... IMHO, it's intended to be a very cost effective approach to testing the DSLR waters. so in effect, someone with a d50 would not actually be upgrading by going to a d40. certainly it would be newer but not necessarily an upgrade.

on the lenses, nikon more than other companies has made an effort (historically) to support a lot of its old lenses. i would think that they won't be abandoning the users of their higher tier DSLRs. moreover, i don't think that the lack of a focus motor on a prospective d40 body indicates a technological trend that will move up the ranks.

my 2 centavos :)

I don't think this will happen with nikon. Non support for non-AFS lenses might be just to lower the price on the D40 and make it altogether a beginner's camera, but of course we cannot know for sure until the camera is finally released. Even then, I would guess that the D40 will have good support for these non AFS lenses as we can see with the D70s/D50, you can clearly use AI lenses on Manual mode, maybe the D40 will be able to meter with these lenses but not use AF? We can clearly see with the D200 and D2X that nikon have added metering for their old AI MF lenses, which I must say are still very good for digital photography. Nikon unlike Canon has not changed mounts since the legendary F camera. Its been a winning formula for them and I don't think this will change. In any case adding AF-S to the good old primes wouldn't be a bad thing, but I have no complaints to the current focussing speed of my primes, even the 180 is pretty quick.

no doubt the old lenses are fine, but they do miss probably the most important feature of the new lenses - the ED element. For that alone the new lenses are worth their money.
