benjie_abadiano 03-17-2009, 09:57 PM we can show them beauty not poverty.

benjie_abadiano 03-17-2009, 10:01 PM a cultural travel photography?

Fherdy Tiongson 03-17-2009, 10:03 PM count on me, benjie
teybartolome 03-17-2009, 10:04 PM kuya benjie, how will you react on exploitation? some photographers think like that: when we cover poor people, we exploit. i'm getting a bit confused with what exploitation really is. :(

I would like to think that it would all depend on the photographers' intention of taking the photo. The purpose/ objective is very important and on how the photos are being used for.
benjie_abadiano 03-17-2009, 10:11 PM count me in benjie anytime anyplace..:D
Thanks Paul! Yes I will invite you on our first meeting which I plan to organize sometime in May.

when it becomes it becomes a shoot-and-leave scenario
as benjie is saying, he's a creating a community program
that way, in no matter what form, the community gets a benefit from it all
it would lessen the perception i guess... but most likely it would come up again
the bottom line is when we get the results from such community program
:)

oh. so we shoot, and we help.
benjie_abadiano 03-17-2009, 10:20 PM you mean i can just find the answers after having the experience? i mean on the shoot.
What I mean is, when you photo shoot them you must have some objectives in mind. Better yet, you need to ask permission from them if they want to be phtograph. This is just my own insights, we can ask some thoughts from other people too. This might be a good start to discuss such kind of ethical questions which photographers usually encounter.

oooh. i really want to learn photojournalism kuya benjie, maybe this is the start. i'm just held up by the "exploitation" thing. i'll find what's bugging me on the event. :D
benjie_abadiano 03-17-2009, 10:25 PM oh. so we shoot, and we help.
There are many ways in helping... Using there photos for awareness building and consciousness raising is also a form of helping people so that their rights be protected and respected. We need not have to create spectacular things or start big projects all the time, even the simplest ways of treating them as they are is already a form of help.

Another photo taken during the photowalk in Binondo with the Sunday Shooters. This kid even asked me if she can take hold on my camera. Then I encouraged her to take some shoots and she gladly click the camera for several times...shooting the Sunday Shooters fro her her perspective.
noeletomalabcad 03-17-2009, 10:35 PM oh. so we shoot, and we help.
i guess this is what benjie's advocacy is... right benj?
alright, helping in any form :)
on the question of exploitation...
i guess its very important for us to be considerate to the place,
the people and to the culture we are working with
not more so on having a fantastic picture
i have joined a shoot4acause once and i saw this 1 pic of a boy
on the act of making a wee wee and holding his thing
surely enough it was the best picture of the day
but i could be a culprit as well as i also have shots of bare boys on the street
albeit in a not so offensive situation

A wonderful reflection!
Santino Telesforo 03-17-2009, 10:50 PM Can't wait to get the Advocacy started. :)
With the exploitation, for me, it all depends on the reason why I shoot. Pretty simple. But what makes it complicated is the thinking of other people. Others may say It's exploitation, but for me it isn't. Shoot with a good cause. :)

as a matter of resolution, its not us the photographer who
can dictate if its exploitation or not.. its your real life subjects
if your subject cry foul of exploitation then it becomes that no matter what your intention is
as benjie is saying... it is important to ask consent and share your intentions from the start
and then be considerate as well :)

ShaleAlbao 03-17-2009, 11:36 PM Shouting PRESENT here! I remember the quote about the builder and the planter. I've always been a builder and feels empty whenever a building is finished. By joining your advocacy, I can become a planter and see the garden grow.
Thanks for this selfless idea. I'm sure you won't only be helping the direct beneficiaries of this cause but also the photographers, the 'givers', who will learn from the people.
Count me in. Since this greatly involves traveling to many places, I may not be able to join all the trips due schedule and budgetary constraints. But I'll do my part in the best way I can. :)

Welcome Shale! I was actually inspired by what you quoted to me from your readings. One of these days I will share with you the article I have written almost similar to that quote. Yes, we will invite you to be part of this mission of PLANTING, GROWING NURTURING AND SHARING SEEDS OF HOPE using phiotograhy as a medium and channel.

Jovit_Morando 03-18-2009, 07:36 AM I'm in Kuya Benjie.
From a Wolfgang Song
"Well now the rain washed back yesterday bringing thoughts of wasted time
And the water it brought flowed swiftly through your mind
Opening your eyes to the stars just to pray
Hoping more rain will wash your garden away"
Hope this time I will help plant beautiful gardens. Builder, planter, sower. yes, I too would like to be a planter.

ace.diloy 03-18-2009, 01:19 PM Kudos to you Benjie for starting this initiative. Being involved in social development, I have always believed that all forms of art should at one point in time, serve a higher purpose, and not just exist for art's sake.
The organization I belong to also adhere's to this advocacy, of using art in order to raise awareness on different social issue, and in particular for us, on sexual abuse of children. http://digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=21604
I am so glad that there are indviduals like you who choose to use photography for causes like these.

Its very inspiring to know that there are people out there with the same passion and conviction on doing something good for others thru photography.
It might be good to start a list of those who wish to participate in this advocacy and a tenative date for our meeting. I suggest it would be on a Saturday afternoon so as to reserve our Sunday for the SUNDAY SHOOTERS schedules.

paulanddumlao 03-18-2009, 02:50 PM I'm with you in this, Ben. Thanks for starting the thread! Many photographers also share the same passion but don't know where to start. This is a good venue for all of us to learn and share different social perspectives. May this project be a start of something where our fellow photographers and other people can draw inspiration from!

Derick_Gamboa 03-18-2009, 10:33 PM Benjie,
Very nice. Reminds me of the same advocacy of an NGO my friend belongs to. Their focus is this coming Presidential elections - "Ikaw, Ano Itataya mo" (translation: what are you willing to put at stake?). Many have been creating movements to make things count. Mostly social movement for moral recovery.
I like this. I'm watching this, and will be looking at your schedules.

Hehe. Sometimes, my memory can be reliable. I'm really bad in memorizing names.
Speaking of names, oh my! I still have to read some info about some Newspapers that my classmates interviewed. The only names I remember are Inquirer's EIC, Opinion Editor, and of course, their chief photographer -- people I really look up to. :)
Sorry for the OT.

benjie_abadiano 03-18-2009, 11:02 PM wow! conference room. :)
A simple conference room if not then we can have it in my house which is more casual, Lance knows that place very well.
Lance_Aquino 03-18-2009, 11:07 PM Am happy to know that we still have students these days that are also thinking of how we can make a difference even in our own simple ways.
I've always called myself miserable, but seeing the less fortunate makes me think twice. Seeing them suffer hurts, but it's even more painful to feel helpless.
This is one of those chances to do something good.
benjie_abadiano 03-18-2009, 11:08 PM A friend of mine who used to teach photography in Ateneo promised to give us a talk on the Philosophy of Photography.
This will provide us a common ground in this advocacy on how to use photography as our simple way of touching other peoples' lives.

Daniel Amular 03-18-2009, 11:50 PM Hi Ben, thanks for sending me a message regarding this thread. It's been more than 6 months since i posted anything on dpp and i'm glad i'm writing in this thread.
I am really impressed and optimistic with the numbers and positive reactions from the readers here. I recall our first discussion on this was around july of last year and then again in January when you were here in Iloilo. It's good that it's finally set in motion.
You know how to contact me and let me know how i can help. I may not be able to join your first meeting as my hands are full with exhibits and photo engagements.
You are doing a good thing, Ben. God bless you and all those joining this project.
noeletomalabcad 03-18-2009, 11:52 PM It's very inspiring to know that there are people out there with the same passion and conviction on trying to do something good for others thru photography.
It might be good to start a list of those who wish to participate in this advocacy and to set a tenative date for our meeting. I suggest that it would be on a Saturday afternoon so as to reserve our Sunday for the SUNDAY SHOOTERS schedules.
I wish to be part of this advocacy campaign in promoting HOPE, PEACE and HARMONY with the EARTH thru Photography:

Hey Dan,
Thanx for visiting this thread. Yes, we were together in this journey from the very beginning. Our sharings and discussions have actually inspired me to start this thread and share to others the vision and spirit that we hope to promote.

Found another reason why I am enjoying photography..... I hope I can contribute more for this group. I'm looking forward for this...Enjoying and improving what you love and giving back the happiness that this art form has always given. It does not make it only a hobby anymore but a form or reaching and serving a purpose. Doing what you love and sharing and serving.

All I know is that you need to have atleast a UV and a CPL Filter. UV if you don't want the polarized effect but you need protection for the dust.

I think I really need to buy one for my 70-200 L lense. 77mm is the size for the fliter. If you can buy one for me with a a generic brand I would really appreciate. I'll just pay you when we see each other on Sunday.

@Kuya Benjie: Stores in Hidalgo carry CPLs and UVs. but remember that "your most expensive lens is your cheapest filter." Try to invest in a good filter.
I wont be able to make it on the 19th coz I'll be out of town. But we can always discuss it during one of our photwalks.

benrose 03-19-2009, 11:36 AM What I mean is, when you photo shoot them you must have some objectives in mind. Better yet, you need to ask permission from them if they want to be phtograph. This is just my own insights, we can ask some thoughts from other people too. This might be a good start to discuss such kind of ethical questions which photographers usually encounter.
Even after obtaining their permission to have them photographed, do we still need a form of release to have their pictures displayed, say, in this forum or elsewhere?

OjiePaloma 03-19-2009, 04:10 PM BORN INTO BROTHELS
Briski, a documentary photographer, went to Calcutta. While there, she befriended the children and offered to teach them photography to reciprocate being allowed to photograph their mothers. The children were given cameras so they could learn photography and possibly improve their lives. Much of their work was used in the film, and the filmmakers recorded the classes as well as daily life in the red light district. The children's work was exhibited, and one boy was even sent to a photography conference in Amsterdam. Briski also recorded her efforts to place the children in boarding schools.
A FRIEND OF MINE GAVE ME A COPY OF THIS FILM WHEN I WENT TO SINGAPORE LAST JANUARY
A very moving and inspiring film indeed. This will also be shown to the Advocacy Photography Meeting on April 18.

Wow, sunset is one of my favorite subjects. Sayang I will be flying to Davao this morning and be back only late in the evening.
Today would be a very very hectic day for me. I will be listening to 28 presentations on the ethnographic study conducted by the indignous youth in Mindanao. However, I am also excited to hear their findings and analysis of the study which they have conducted for tha past couple of months.
By the way, I wish to see some of your pictures here as well. You may wish to post some of your best pix.
