View Full Version : Canon 5D vs 30D(Sports Photography)
Michael Yulo 11-08-2006, 07:30 PM Forgive the ignorance as I am still new to camerras and photography.Anyway, for sports photography, what would be a better camera to get,the Canon 5D(Full Frame)or the Canon 30D(1.6 Crop Factor)/And why?
THANKS.
Michael Y.
Nono Felipe 11-08-2006, 07:39 PM I would say 30D because of the 5fps vs 3fps of the 5D. But everything depends on your lenses and what particular sport you're shooting. I'd take shooting with a 5D + 400mm lens over 30D+24-70mm in a football game for example.
The 1.6 crop on the 30D lends itself very useful for sports like football, basketball, volleyball where you cannot move in close to the players. The 5D's full-frame sensor on the other hand lends itself very good to wide shooters.
I cannot comment on focusing speed on both because I have never touched a 5D yet. However I've been shootin sports for over three years now with a 1.6x crop and am very happy. The 5fps gives me good dunk sequences as well.
My advice: try both. Go to the store, ask someone to run down the street while you shoot that person with a 5D. Afterwards do the same with a 30D. :) After you try, take your pick.

ANGELO SANTOS 11-08-2006, 11:27 PM yes, the 1D MkIIN, the ultimate in sports and photojournalism. but that's out of the question. :)
Nono has some good points. if you ask me i'll take the 30D as well. lends itself very well to your intended subjects.
JonDexterTan 11-08-2006, 11:40 PM 30D 5fps baby!
Ruel Tafalla 11-09-2006, 04:23 PM I have both..5d and 30d...and I used to own a 1dmk2..the 1dmk2 wins followed by the 30d..the 5d is quite slow but if your after nice clean images the 5d wins..
the 5d is still slower compared to the 30d in terms of FPS (obviously )..focussing speed seems to be same..
hope that helps..

RueL,
How about with 1 shot, which is faster, the 5D or the 30D?Also,if I may ask,why did you get rid of the 1DMK2 for the 5D?Is the 5D better than the 1DMK2?
THANKS.

Kong Siew Tung 12-01-2006, 07:52 AM If cannot afford the Marks, go for 30D. 5fps.
Darryl Ong 12-01-2006, 08:51 AM 30d more easy on the pocket + 5fps ;)
MikeDougan 12-01-2006, 10:16 AM In the day's when film was king 3fps was fast!
I say don't rely on high frame rates, learn how to use your tools properly and you'll capture the moment no matter what camera you use.

zandy_marantal 12-01-2006, 10:48 AM For sports, it's reach, reach, reach.
The 30D would give you that over the 5D because of the crop factor. You would need more expensive lenses with the 5D to get the same FOV.

i agree sir...:)

Hi Zandy, kamusta na?
Is it really a difference in the "reach?" All the while, I am thinking that the reach of a FF and cropped sensors are basically the same... it's just that the cropped sensor would tend to look closer/tighter because of the cropping factor (which I could also do in post-processing... that is, re-cropping the image to gain closer/tighter FOV.)
Anyways, I am about to get a 5D myself (Iwas given a 400D gift for Christmas and I was very impressed with the photo quality), hence, I am looking at a higher-end body but cannot afford the price of a Mark-II. What's your take with a 5D body + 24-105mm L lens (this is the one I am looking at right now)?
Regards. :)

Mabuti naman. :)
You are correct. And there are countless threads all over the internet that discuss this. It is "essentially" the same (FOV is different of course) but you would be getting considerably less resolution if you were to do the crop manually(also kind of tedious). Framing your shot would also be difficult.
Marcos Reyes Lequin 01-10-2007, 08:33 AM I have both 30D and 5D, i'd say for sports photography use 30D with its fps with 28-300mm L IS USM lens and use 5D for portaiture and landscape .
Glenn Francisco 01-10-2007, 08:47 AM yep..FOR SPORTS i'd get the 30d!!!
but for portraits..studio shots...5d.
leni llapitan 01-10-2007, 09:12 AM hey micheal!
you thinkin of getting the 5d? hmmm
you've already got a pretty hefty arsenal of equipment with you...i'd say use them first to the max....your 30d matched with all your L lenses will do the job - as long as you practice and practice and practice....the next level for sports photography is really the 1D MarkIIN....but for its price....ouch!!!! heck, if you can afford it why not!!! BUT....
remember, buying the most expensive equipment will not make you a better photographer....it will still depend on your skills....

Leni,
No.I'm not thinking of getting a new 5D.At this time, after all the spending for my photo gear since September and these past holidays,I'm already broke.I was just inquiring about the 5d out of curiosity.By the way,I've been seeing the pictures that you've been posting at the sports section of this forum and they really look great.

The 30D would give you that over the 5D because of the crop factor. You would need more expensive lenses with the 5D to get the same FOV.
But wouldn't you come up with the same FOV if you just crop the 5D image and still have the same resolution as the 30D since the 5D has 4megapixel more?
aly_yap 01-10-2007, 07:28 PM ken, i think that's true
