martin_cp_valeriano 06-09-2006, 12:02 PM welcome home pat
your arrival is much awaited esp by me. i've very recently started shooting weddings and i really don't know what questions to start throwing your way bec i've got tons and tons of them but i don't want to burn you out before your time haha
could you please start by giving us time honored tips and tricks on how to make our photos stand out and pull away from your run of the mill instamatic like photos? i'd really like to experiment but i'm so afraid to put clients looking like fools on one of their most important days just bec i don't know what i'm doing...
thank you so much for being here
pat dy 06-10-2006, 01:12 AM tnx martin,
when i started shooting weddings, i shot my friends for free 6 years ago but i wasnt the main photographer, i shot weddings being the friend who will do it for free. i think i did almost 10 weddings to build up my folio before i started marketing myself to be the main photog. i took me probably 30 weddings to really be comfortable and have a good rhythm for it...
in regards to style,, i always looked at famous foreign photogs for influence just as i buy a lot of fashion mags for my fashion approach....try to copy come styles from different photogs and then try to develop, create a different perspective on how u willl approach it....i'll try to post some pics next week if you like...'

dinolara 06-22-2006, 07:54 PM Hi Pat,
I've been in a wedding for quite some time already but my main focus is always on documentary. Additonally, I have almost zero experience in fashion photography. It would help me a lot if I can get tips on how to add a fashion flavor in my style.
What are the factors that drive fashion photography? It is ligthing, the pose, props and accessories, make-up?
I'll appreciate any tips.
Thanks,
Dino
Pilar Tuason 06-22-2006, 10:58 PM Hi Guys,
I would love to hear Pat's response to this since he does a lot of fashion shoots and weddings as well. I try to incorporate more on glamour or beauty into my bridal portraits. The possibility of this happening though depends if I get enough time with the bride before she hops off into her limo to get married. So what I normally do is first, I tell her and the coordinator (before the wedding day) that she MUST be ready 1 hour before we leave for the church. This NEVER happens but in reality what I really need is a good 15-20 mins of uninterrupted shooting. (I just say 1 hour so I get my 20 mins:D ) Anyway, I love to photograph the bride using available light coming from the window. I ALWAYS have a reflector to open up the shadows. I am particular about the poses I choose and try to go for the classics more than anything. I look at the bride (without making it obvious) if she looks better smiling or semi smiling, serious, ect. If she looks good in all, I take all. I also always flatter the bride no matter how concious she is of the camera. You look gorgeous, wow! thats it! whoohoo!! beautiful! (They love this and they get more into it) If she looks better smiling then I concentrate on taking more smiling shots. Some women dont look good serious. The only prop I use is the bouquet and her veil. I don't really like the cutesy shots on a bride. I prefer my brides to look elegant (with a touch of flirty is ok if it's her personlaity) As for the poses, there are tons of poses that you can check out. I love looking at imported bridal magazines/catalouges for inspiration.
HTH.
Pilar:)

pat dy 06-23-2006, 12:19 AM hi dino,
sorry for the delay, hopefully it won't take as long again to reply to a wedding master :)
fashion photography applied to weddings for me mainly starts with the right pose, i would normally buy martha stewart and bride and look at their fshion spreads and local magazines like preview or mega ,metro and update myself with trendy poses.
Even with the right make up , lighting but the pose looks like it was fromt the 80's then it wouldnt't pass with the editors. With wedding poses, what's in now is the "posed shot but still looking relaxed and a little bit lazy" normally when we shoot brides we mainly them smile etc... i will look at some shots i did then i promise to post a picture tom that represents for me a fashion and wedding look that may pass for a magazine editorial and bridal picture..
tnx

Francis Perez 06-23-2006, 12:20 AM diba fasion photography means its photography that brings out the best out of the clothes or accessories...
so if fashion blended with wedding.. does that mean showing off the best look of the clothes... the gown and the other accessories of the bride vis a vis the beauty of the couple etc... tama ba ako?
pat dy 06-23-2006, 12:32 AM hi francis,
in this thread fashion blended with weddings refers to a certain look and feel of a picture.. we know that wedding photography has a lot of photojournalism and documentary involved.. but lets say, what about when you need to pose them for their casual portraits..how do you make them pose without making them look funny, or un trendy.? how do you balance what's baduy in the eyes of the client versus your taste in how you will pose them...hopefully we can share pictures in this thread and discuss how we can improve them...
tnx
pat dy 06-23-2006, 12:34 AM guys ill be posting a few pics tom and hopefully everyone reading this thread can post their wedding fashion pics as well...

pat dy 06-23-2006, 03:12 PM hi guys, here are some sample on how i incorporate fashion approach to my weddings,, hope you find it useful..
1. solo picture mika, i took this shot by the window only , used an 85mm fixed lens (my fav lens). as she was turning to look the other way i kept on shooting and everything just fell into place... i love shooting really really really (u get the point) tight.. it looks like a beauty editorial and would easily completed a nice big spread on your coffee table albums..
2.run: i had mika drop her bouquet and made her walk along the corridor with the naice wonderful natural light..i had her hold her gown while walking and was just talking her while she walks towards me thus acheiving a nice relaxed walking casual look. it depends how you want to approach it but for me relaxed looking posed shots works:)
3. paoria: this shots one of my currect favorites, i love drama and found this small hut in tagaytay h.lands.. it was raining the the sky was perfect!
enjoy!

pat dy 06-24-2006, 01:56 AM how are you,
as for your image, love the composition, i think its just the expression of both of them, i would normally talk and prep them to smile or show some emotion to get a certain feel for the image..
Pilar Tuason 06-24-2006, 10:01 AM Hey Arnell, Love the comosition and the conversion to bnw. However, there is no connection either of the couple to each other or the couple to the photographer. The guy is also standing kinda awkward.
Arnell Umali 06-24-2006, 10:54 AM Thanks for the C&C :)
For me the issue is one of ideology and treatment. Hence, images created by Irving Penn is diffrent from Herb Ritts or Demarchelier. I prefer to place the couple in situations and let them react naturally to the environment. I little "nudge" here and there is all I do. I strive for classic images - not too stylized and still within the realms of believability. Hopefully, I create images that do not become easily dated - sort of like a cross between documentary and Liebovitz. :)

Totally agree with you. The bride is perfect. Love her pose, epression. The guy just does not look "involved" like he would rather be elsewhere. No need for any exaggerations. I would have prefered a "connection" from him to either his bride or th the viewer of the photo. A simple gesture like stand straight, look at your bride, or hold your wife can do wonders to a photo. :)

I knew someone was gonna pick that up. :)
Too bad the photo is small and does not show much detail of the guy's face. With a bigger picture (we had it blown up big for their wall), you would see the guy looking tenderly at his wife - the look I observed him giving his wife whenever he glances towards her direction. For me (and I hope for the guy) capturing that look was enough.
A side story - you may notice the guys right arm seems to be cut off. Actually he was "leaning" a bit towards his wife and tickling her "back" at that point. I wanted this picture to remind them of that moment - the silly fun thing they did and their thoughts, among other things. But I digress; this should be a thread injecting fashion in wedding photography. Now let's see other pictures. :)
Happy snaps y'all.
Pilar Tuason 06-26-2006, 09:34 AM Ultimately, what matters most is that the couple is happy with their photos. You can throw all technicality issues out the window when you hear the couple say....wow! I love this photo!! Because that is what it's all about.....:)
pat dy 06-26-2006, 10:55 AM another fashon yet applucable pose for real bride for your out of town beach weddings;). used natural light with hair highlghts using silver reflector .http://static.flickr.com/51/175079762_961857d280.jpg
pat dy 06-26-2006, 11:03 AM martin here's a bigger file.tnx agian. shot this in tagaytay highlands during one wonderful gloomy afternoon:)

jaime_elizaga 06-26-2006, 02:31 PM wow... very nice images.. :)
martin_cp_valeriano 06-27-2006, 12:09 PM reading the posts from arnell, i realize that there is a story behind every photo...
reading pilar's i realize that ultimately the couple / subject are the ones who need to to be wow'ed :)
ultimately, i understand now that it is the photographer's responsibility to project the story and to wow the couple :) while mxing in his own tastes and concept of what is beautiful and pleasing... whew... what have i gotten myself into??? :)
martin_cp_valeriano 06-27-2006, 12:11 PM thank you pat, the last photo's size is much better... :)
what's your favorite lens?
pat dy 06-28-2006, 01:16 AM hey martn,
my pinaka pinaka fav lens is the 85mm 1.8 lens , 2nd is my 50mm 1.4
martin_cp_valeriano 06-28-2006, 04:06 PM thank you for the reply pat... gives me an idea on what lenses i should be investing in :)
John Edward Taca 07-26-2006, 01:56 AM mr pat, nice photo especially the one in highlands!
i jsut started with fashion and enjoy it immensely! its great to know that you can marry the two as you proposed =) besides a big part of weddings esp wedding photography is about beauty.. i think =)
Eddie Boy Escudero 08-19-2006, 11:09 PM i shot fashion first before shooting weddings and these are two totally different forms of photography. most fashion shoots have professional models doing the posing and you basically just click the shutter. most couples on the other hand, don't know squat about posing so you have to guide them.
my poses are usually very simple poses that they would normally do. once in awhile i have a crazy couple that i have fun with. my favorites are the very randy ones that can't wait consumate their vows. THEN I REALLY HAVE FUN!
:<)
