Romy Ocon 11-07-2006, 12:35 PM Thanks, everybody....:)
Willy, I have several field guides and reference books on Philippine birds. For the really exotic ones, I consult with expert birders abroad on the IDs.

Thanks again, everybody....:)
Willy, most birding at the Cordilleras is near the mountain trails, so I need not go far from my vehicle. In other areas, when I've to hike fairly far, I bring along a birding buddy to help carry gear and provisions...:)

Raul Marcelo 11-07-2006, 03:14 PM i've run out of nice adjectives to describe how great your captures are. been following your cordillera escapade at another birdwatchers' forum. hope to see them all in a book soon.

MikeDougan 11-07-2006, 07:42 PM Romy,
Your bird pictures are by far the best I've ever seen. It's time you published your collection/collection's of images. There are many people round the world who would love to see the birds of the Philippines and would pay to have your print's (either in a book or hanging on the wall).
Mike
Romy Ocon 11-07-2006, 09:44 PM Thanks, Raul, Tina (wish you get well soon!), Vernes and Mike....:)
One bonus in this highland birding is I got to shoot the full moon through ideal atmospheric conditions (sans Metro Manila's polluted air).
The rarefied atmosphere at more than 7000 feet allowed some of the moon's colors to reach earth, so I used only a 2x TC on this shot to try and capture these. I then boosted the saturation and local contrast in post process to exaggerate whatever lunar colors were caught by the sensor....

David Tong 11-07-2006, 09:53 PM Nice caps!
Just wondering, how long of a zoom lens does it take to shoot birds usually?
MOOOON!!! Galing...
Did you guys see how large, round and low the moon was 2 nights ago? Wished I was able to take some pics, but I only saw the moon while I was coming from Greenhills to Pasig (eastbound)... :(
fidel_mercado 11-07-2006, 09:54 PM Great photo of the moon Romy. Hmm, do you have a special vehicle for birding? Like an ATV or a Jeep Wrangler? :)

Thanks, David.
For shy Philippine birds, a 400 mm is the minimum length I recommend.... and the longer, the better.
Got that moon before sun up on November 6...:)

Hi Fidel,
A 4x4 SUV would be nice for birding, but I just use my daily commuter (Mitsubishi Adventure) in my sorties. Higher ground clearance would help, particularly in unpaved remote roads.

fidel_mercado 11-07-2006, 10:09 PM Oh okay, I see, I see. Thanks for sharing Romy. :)
Gil Tuzon 11-08-2006, 03:58 AM Kilig to the bones pics. I could the excitement during the acts of captures. Awesome thrill.

migsguerrero 11-08-2006, 05:18 AM Laki nang moon, you can almost see the aliens on the moon's ground with those, if there were such.
Jimmy Rosaria 11-08-2006, 06:30 AM why did you say high altitute birds? is seems to me you have the same eye level with all those birds? nasa taas ka rin ba ng puno? galing kasi e

Jimmy, by high altitude, I mean montane birds (found in 1000 m or higher above sea level)....:)

Just cuirous Romy, does your buddy do some birding too?
Romy Ocon 11-08-2006, 07:06 AM Just cuirous Romy, does your buddy do some birding too?
Nope, Reyno.... he drives the car when I use it as a blind (I stay in the backseat so I can shoot left or right). He also keeps eye on the bird (with 12x50 binos) when I use long lengths, like we are a sniper team. It's quite easy to lose the bird when looking through a 700 or 800 mm lens on a 1.6 CF body. When the bird moves out of the VF, he can then tell me where it went.
Also, when I get a super keeper and I toast myself a shot of brandy, I need somebody to clink my shot glass with....:D

very nice shots sir romy!!! jaw dropping talaga!! I like this concept of yours of your birding buddy, for u/w naman its a lighting engineer to hold your flashlight on the subject while your camera focuses:D
