Do you still use color correction filters with digicams/DSLRs even with AWB and PS around? Why?

Lopez 11-06-2006, 05:19 PM Do you still use color correction filters with digicams/DSLRs even with AWB and PS around? Why? nope i never dabbled into them so i have no basis for comparison. im pretty happy and satisfied with what ps can do bernard billedo 11-06-2006, 07:00 PM With film cameras, yes but I don't think it's necessary to use CC filters when using digital cameras. mitzpicardal 11-07-2006, 09:38 AM I did a bit of research and test and here it is. The theory goes like this: If you shoot in an environment with very low color temperature blues are very underrepresented. You can say, they are underexposed. During white balance no matter whether in the camera or the raw converter, the blue channel has to be pushed up more than the red and green one. See the general Wikipedia entry on Colour Temperature at: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_temperature> (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_temperature) ... and scroll down the page to the "Spectral power distribution plot" heading. Have a look at the graphs and you'll see why you need to filter excess red+yellow frequencies from incandescent light sources. See also the spectral distribution curves for various indoor lighting options at: <http://tinyurl.com/ykvtr4> (http://tinyurl.com/ykvtr4) Hence using a blue filter to correct the light colour as much as you can before it hits the film/sensor. Other colors applied. Can't notice any difference though on my test. Maybe i need to calibrate my monitor or better my eyes :) paulo_artiaga 11-07-2006, 09:46 AM Thank you for sharing that very useful piece of information. :) Jo Avila 11-07-2006, 02:59 PM I haven't used CC filters in a very long time. Shooting in RAW is sufficient enough for me :D Anton Lorenzo 11-07-2006, 03:01 PM The preset white balance setting on the camera is also a good way to get the white balance correct. zandy_marantal 11-07-2006, 04:22 PM I've heard a lot of good things about this filter. http://www.singh-ray.com/goldnblue.html Pretty expensive though. I hope it's worth it. bernard billedo 11-08-2006, 10:10 AM I've heard a lot of good things about this filter. http://www.singh-ray.com/goldnblue.html Pretty expensive though. I hope it's worth it. You really get your money's worth with Singh-Ray filters. They are hard to get right now as there's a backlog of orders especially with their polarizers. Glad that I got my grads early. Ems Chua 11-08-2006, 10:37 AM other than cpls, nd grad filters, and infras, i dont have other filters. rosalie_gomez 11-08-2006, 03:22 PM Have never tried any... :) |
