View Full Version : Street Photography - MONOCHROME ONLY!
Sonny Thakur 09-06-2006, 08:01 PM I noticed that quite a few of the threads here have the cliched street children staring at cameras. While most of the shots are great, I find that it gets quite repetetive. Does anyone here have work similar to people like Chris Weeks? Here's are links to his galleries and blogs. He's a street purist shooting with a Leica M6 and Leica MP with 50mm fixed lenses.

Sonny Thakur 09-06-2006, 09:04 PM Really interested in what your shots look like Earl. I find it hard shooting with a dslr so I have to test my rangefinder soon. Im just lucky to have 8 rolls of black and white film fall into my hands :D

Sonny, were you able to buy the battery for your Yashica? Have a test roll of an old film first so you can check if you don't have problems with the POD or have no light leaks. If it's OK, PM me so we can go for some street photography with our Yashicas. :)

Sonny Thakur 09-06-2006, 09:24 PM Gerardo,
I was able to ghetto rig my own battery like someone on some other thread suggested. (I think it was you hehe) 6V 4LR44 + 10centavo coins. I'm developing my first roll within the week if time permits me :) Sure, we should have a film EB but keep the numbers low if we want to do serious street stuff :)
@Gelbert,
I find it hard to shoot street with a dslr cause people always look my way when I pull my camera out :(
GelbertAplal 09-06-2006, 09:33 PM I also use a DSLR sir.
Sonny Thakur 09-06-2006, 09:36 PM I want to try to master MF and shooting from the hip with a rangefinder.
I just hope my yashica can still perform. If it doesnt work as good as I want it to, I'll need to try to find a Voigtlander soon hehe.
Marco_Ingco 09-06-2006, 09:39 PM I also use a DSLR sir.
Di ba nakakatakot magbitbit ng DSLR sa kalye? Lalo na kung commute ka lang? Di ba takaw sa tingin ng mga magnanakaw?
Sonny Thakur 09-06-2006, 09:42 PM Marco,
Thats what I thought too.
GelbertAplal 09-06-2006, 10:53 PM Yup, its scary at first, but you will get used to it.
Heres what I've learned, if you use a P&S or a cellphone, mas nakakatakot for me, because the people there might think that you are someone new at that place. But if you put your SLR out, they would think that you are somesort of press, and the people would be always happy to help you or not mind you at all( except places like Makati CBD, all the security guards there are afraid of SLR )
But we must always be careful on what we are shooting outside, like in Quiapo, if I'm in the DVD/illegal stalls area ( Arligue and those sort ) I would hide my camera for they might think I would be exposing them. :)
Sonny Thakur 09-06-2006, 11:23 PM The new Fujifilm PnS camera looks portable and very good at lowlight with a 28mm f/1.9 lens. Im sure the rangefinder freaks here will relate hehe.
Gelbert,
I dont like getting attention whatsoever. I'll try scanning my shots soon and post it here too :)
jay jallorina 09-07-2006, 11:22 AM Di ba nakakatakot magbitbit ng DSLR sa kalye? Lalo na kung commute ka lang? Di ba takaw sa tingin ng mga magnanakaw?
i always bring my dslr and i always commute. sometimes very, very late at night...wee hours of the morning...walk the streets and abandoned places of the metro looking for night things to shoot...
it was scary at first. the mother would always tell on me. kaya lang...that's part of an artists mentality. i know it may be a foolish risk to be making. but then, this is who we are and what we love to do...
its a real dilemma. who wants to lose a hard earned camera. or yourself? traumatized na ako sa hold-up, but luckily wala pa ako cam noon... :Scared:
kaya siguro deterring factor din yung tripod ko. medyo may bigat yun at mainam pang self-defense.
Sonny Thakur 09-07-2006, 12:20 PM Gerardo, I'd like to see pics from your yashica if you dont mind :D

Sonny Thakur 09-07-2006, 02:54 PM Jay,
You can check the links in the first page. Im sure you'll enjoy Chris Weeks' Blog :)
Basically, its capturing moments you see everyday. Moment that you wouldnt normally capture. A lost kid in a supermarket, a couple fighting, a bum with a guitar on the street. Basically being there when IT happens and not attracting too much attention.

sir, thanks a lot! you've just answered something that has had me wondering for the longest time! now im more encouraged to shoot street, knowing what to look for.
being the landscape lover...i kind of put the same mentality when i tried to shoot street once. it was wrong pala. :D
Sonny Thakur 09-07-2006, 03:28 PM Landscape photographer? hehe, Chris might be a tad bit harsh when it comes to that field, he's quite narrowminded with other fields of photography. I'll link you guys to his article "Street Photography for the Purist"

Sometimes..... but i get the hang of actually hiding and taking snaps off street corner (its fun actually:) ). I remember way back from film school... the best attribute that a street photographer could have is his/her ability to be invisible:) .
still learning.....:)
fidel_mercado 09-07-2006, 10:30 PM Haha, I see, I see. Thanks for the tip. :)
Sonny Thakur 09-07-2006, 10:54 PM for street, i prefer to be "part of the scene"
Levi, what kind of yashica? GS? :D
Amiel_Mercado 09-07-2006, 11:21 PM You know, I tried street photography in Makati in Rada street, Palanca and De La Rosa street, but security guards kept telling me I can't take a picture of the building or they would come and ask me if i'm an investigator or NBI or something like that. Some even said I need permission from the adminstration to shoot the building. I kept telling them it's private photography. Isn't that funny? You can't take pictures. It's like saying you can't breathe the air next to the building.
Sonny Thakur 09-07-2006, 11:24 PM Amiel,
Ive been through that. :) Sucks huh?
Gerardo Sabado 09-07-2006, 11:32 PM Gerardo, I'd like to see pics from your yashica if you dont mind :D
Hello Sonny,
I have included a photo using a Yashica in my original post here (http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=1021).
Here's another one using a Yashica 35 GSN loaded with a Kodak Tmax 400.

Was that pushed to a certain asa or kept at 400? I heard tmax400 (or was that tri-x) is a very forgiving film. Amazing shot sir, very "street"
@levi,
We have the same cam then. (minus the N for me though) :) whats wrong with yours?
Jovit_Morando 09-08-2006, 08:36 AM question po sa mga yashieca owners, how do you make the DIY batt?
Sonny Thakur 09-08-2006, 09:02 AM Jovit,
I used a 4LR44 6V battery and a few 10 centavo coins (you can use a c25 spring too)
The GSN and GTN (GS and GT too) have meters that can handle the extra voltage :)
john_javellana 09-08-2006, 09:52 AM for street, i prefer to be "part of the scene"
for me that's the way it should be. i believe that street photography should be done with a short lens, rather than a long one. i think it's not polite for anybody to just take photos of people without them knowing (how would you feel if you were in a photo you didn't even know was shot? and it was posted somewhere so that the whole world could see it? and you didn't like the photo). it's simply not ethical. in other countries, you can't just take a photo of anybody without their permission (i'm not sure about here).
street photography is about you exploring and actually being on the street, not just in a corner behind a post taking photos using your long lens with gusto and being "invisible" (what are you, a spy or something?). yes, you might say that there are certrain "moments" that you can only capture through a long lens and being invisible but i believe that you can also get those once you get your subjects comfortable and all. bottomline is for me, street photography means you on the street, not just in a car or behind posts covertly taking shot. i used to be a long-lens user before when i shoot street. yes, the images were really nice, especially the "stolen" or "candid" ones but i didn't feel nice about it so i started using a 50mm instead and showing my subjects the via lcd whenever i could.
oh well that's just my opinion. no pun intended, not here for arguments! have your say guys!
best,
John

thats why i totally admire those purist who only uses 50mm on street photography.
next time i'll ditch the rest of my glass and stick with my 50mm:) .
btw, im not a spy....just a newbie...

I used the real ASA for my films since I don't know of a photolab in Manila that can process "pushed" B&W films.

Chris Weeks has a very defined style. He even says that "real" street photographers use rangefinder cameras (Leicas are the best in his opinion) With Fifty's, and Kodak Tri-X 400.
@Dennis,
Literally "street" But I like the shot. I love the grain in black and white photos. Im looking for the higher asa Black and White film. As soon as I get some of my test shots scanned, I'll post it here.

jay jallorina 09-08-2006, 05:40 PM he looks stoned...and he's missing a slipper.
street na street but the lighting on him is too good. hehehe :D lets see it in mono kaya?
chewychua 09-08-2006, 06:02 PM he does look stoned, now that you've mentioned it :)
how do i convert it to mono? straight desaturation?
GelbertAplal 09-08-2006, 06:08 PM desaturate can do it bro, but you may want to try gradient map (using black and white as the colors ) then do some curves/brightness/contrast depending on your taste.
(too much rugby for him I guess)
jay jallorina 09-08-2006, 06:18 PM he does look stoned, now that you've mentioned it :)
how do i convert it to mono? straight desaturation?
for a start, yeah...just to see how it would look without the colors.
there are alot of conversion methods (im sure alam mo na yun!), pero since the topic is street and there is a specific look were after, i would try to simulate classic kodak tri-max look using a channels layer (mono checked) and another curves adjustment layer with tweaks in indiviual color channels. kind of complicated i know, in that case you might wish to try using alien skin exposure plug-in for CS2 (has kodak tri-max presets) or the imaging factory's convert to BW pro (my favorite pag tinatamad ako).
street BW should be gritty...
chewychua 09-08-2006, 06:24 PM took me a while to find the gradient map thing... heheheh but here it is... http://www.flickr.com/photos/chewychua/237541102/
i never thought that there was another way of getting BW shots aside from desaturation (which always leaves the image rather flat)
thanks!

jay jallorina 09-08-2006, 07:22 PM thats it sir gelbert...thats what i had in mind. stark, contrasty, looking a lot like film and not smooth digital. gritty man!
i would be experimenting naman on the "bleached" mono look applied to street photographs. the kind made famous by janus kaminski in saving private ryan. will try to take street shots this weekend and process them along this direction. if it turns well, i'll post it here. if its crap, then crap it is :D digital learning is faster! hehehe

jom fajardo 09-24-2006, 10:26 PM hello mga people.. hehe first post ko.. haha i saw someone holding a dpp magazine kanina sa ateneo ust game tpos natuwa ako kaya i joined nlng..
anyway, my thesis kse for school is street photography and super hirap tlga magshoot ng di nag-aatract ng attention. usually naka sabit lng sa neck ko yung cam tpos autofocus nlng tpos pasimpleng kuha para di ako mapansin tlga.. minsan pag nakakatago ako eh manual focus syempre. ganun din ba yung iba sa inyo na minsan malaki tlga tulong ng chamba? hehehe syempre diskarte na din. and to the guy who started this thread, yup i agree with you sir na tlgang minsan nasisira yung idea tlga ng street photography.. dapat kse candid, well at least for me... some people kse porket nasa street eh street photography na yun for them.. well siguro tama naman sila pero chris weeks din kse tlga yung isa sa mga inspirations ko for street shooting eh. i use a 350d and 50mm na lens para normal lang yung dating. kung ano lng nakkita ng mata ko halos yung masshoot ko. kung close-up shot, lapit ako sa subject para mas initimate. and di pa din ako magpapahalata.. hehe sharing lng. great shots you guys have here sa thread!

are you even sure that they go to those "depressed areas" to "shoot street"? what if they do it because they want to document the way of life there which falls under "photo documentary" that is different from street photography. before commenting that some people just take photos of poverty or literal street shots and that they declare them as "street photography", see first if they're actually classifying them as "street" "documentary" or such. you might be getting the wrong idea.

Tok Paler 09-26-2006, 10:54 PM I just noticed...

Sonny Thakur 09-27-2006, 10:18 AM But people there are easy to get along with. There are some tourists in Venice that wont mind you sharing a gondola with them. (A ride is about 100 euros for 2 people, I was able to split the costs with a fine lookin feline from germany) :)
There's something about the shot you took btw.. the leading lines, the busy background. It all works very well together.
Pilar Tuason 09-27-2006, 08:57 PM My ultimate all time favorite street photographer is Henri Cartier Bresson. His street photos really speak. They are not just photos of people not knowing that they are being photographed but the pictures in itself speak so much. He was a Leica user and I personally feel that rangefinders are the best for street photography since they are so small, they dont call attention. You dont need flash since the lenses are very fast and sharp. The only trick you really need to master is distance reading and setting the lens to the distance and properly exposing the image. It simplifies photography back to it's basic roots of ISO, shutter speed and aperture. In this digital world we live in, where the camera gets so complicated by the day with so many options, i look forward to taking my trusty leica and walking the streets being part of the whole scene and just pressing the button with that beautiful clicking sound that it has.... Too bad I don't get too many of those days:( I think i will load up my camera tom. BTW, besides Bengy Toda, who else develops good black and white film?
estan_cabigas 09-27-2006, 11:18 PM Pilar, I developed films... 10 years ago. hehehehe.
Anyway, good thing that this thread is really goin.

Thanks Melvin :) Im using my very loyal 300D, when just walking or commuting; 80% of the time I use the kit lens 18-55. But when I'm really into it, I use the 50mm 1.8.

andrew_zubiri 10-25-2006, 02:23 PM Hi, this is my first post. I appreciate all the nice shots posted here. As someone new in photography, I think I could enjoy this genre.
I'm just curious how to make those gritty, b&w shots straight from a digicam? I'm somehow a purist (or tamad lang to learn PS :) ). Is it in the saturation settings? Is the grittiness necessary if it were a colored pic? By the way, I'm just using a P&S cam.
Many thanks.
GelbertAplal 10-26-2006, 01:31 AM Hi Andrew, im no expert in different cam settings, but I believe the experts here can help you more if you can give them the model of your cam.
With regards to the grittiness, its really up to you, a black and white can be sharp and clear, and a colored pic can be gritty if you wanted it to.

Thanks, Gelbert. I'm using a Casio EX-Z110 P&S cam. I set the saturation and contrast to its highest settings to try to achieve that gritty effect (at least that's how I think it could be done :) ), and started shooting inside the bus on my way to work. And then my battery died. :)) Sayang. I'll try again later or tomorrow maybe.
I observe you took those shots in a non-aircon bus. 'Di ka ba natatakot? Ako nga sa aircon bus (naks!) na nagshu-shoot gamit ang P&S lang, praning pa din.

Thanks, Sonny. Does that mean the street photography "effect" could not be achieved with a digicam without using third party editing softwares?

Confessions of a Street Walker by Martin Elkort
Why Street Photography?
http://www.rangefindermag.com/magazine/Jan07/showpage.taf?page=166
Willie Sutton, when asked why he robbed banks, famously replied, “Because that’s where the money is.” If asked why he or she wanders the streets of the world’s cities, today’s street photographer might paraphrase Sutton by saying, “Because that’s where life is.” But the street photographer “takes” images from the streets for higher purposes. He documents his world, and in the process, often creates art.

You may want to ask yourself what is it you are trying to convey with your pictures. For me, the pictures could be anywhere in Bumi/Indo Asia during the floods. Perhaps an "top" shot (on top of a building) which includes some familiar Indonesian landmarks would be more effective.
My 2 cents.

i don't think i can eat in that place... i think that's qualified under cruelty to animals. (yes, but if they didn't show the poor thing alive, then it's milder.) oh, no!!! am i going to start being a vegetarian? nah.
Oggie Ramos 03-13-2007, 04:48 PM @din: perhaps one sunday, i will eat there and report back to you whether they actually serve the poor creature (i hope not) or they're just good luck charms (in lieu of a bark, you get greeted by oinks).
