View Full Version : Travel ARABIA
jose_deluna 11-06-2006, 02:54 PM Here on this thread you will find and you may post magnificent images and great travel experiences of Pinoy Photographers (other nationalities are mostly welcome as well) while working or travelling in the Arabian Peninsula.
In this way, we can show very unique images and highlight on our not-so ordinary travel experiences that will hopefully help our fellow kababayans to understand the place, the people, and the culture of such oil-rich region that plays major contribution to the economic upliftment of our beloved motherland.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), for one, is not only about desert and sand dunes, camels, oil, gold, and terrorists. It's definitely more than that. KSA is not only a workplace for us, Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs)... it has provided prosperous life and bright future for our families and loved-ones in the Philippines... it has provided great opportunities for us in terms of skills-knowledge-technology development... and it has become our second home.
First and foremost, let me introduce KSA as a very warm and modest place that is definitely worth seeing and capturing through photography...

Bobby Wong 11-06-2006, 03:52 PM Jose,
Excellent imagery, and I applaud you for starting a thread here to introduce others on this forum to that part of the world where you are based.
You folks (and your remittances) are literally keeping this economy afloat. More than just in pursuit of better pay, your sacrifice is understood, even if it is not always acknowledged. Thanks.
I'm looking forward to seeing more pics from you and the rest living away from home.
fidel_mercado 11-06-2006, 03:53 PM Nice shots Jose, brilliant colors. :)
jose_deluna 11-06-2006, 04:01 PM @BobbyWong... many thanks for the appreciation, hopefully I could really convince my colleagues here in KSA to show images of Arabia as they see and interpret it during their most creative moments.
@FidelMercado... lots of thanks for the comment, makes me more humble and confident. Hopefully, you'll see other colors of Saudi Arabia as seen and interpreted by a lot of our Pinoy photographers. Medyo shy pa lang sila kaya di pa nagpo-post...
jerome pagunsan 11-06-2006, 04:10 PM As Jose said, this is one hell of sceneries and beautiful places in Saudi Arabia. Taken outside Medain Saleh where we have our Grand EB for DPP-KSA. After those gruelling hours on the road it's worth every calories that we've lost. As i describe it and still mesmerizing, it was simply amazing and it worth sharing to all.

jose_deluna 11-07-2006, 12:00 AM @Manuel_Garcia... you've got great images there... let's try to compare images (architecture, textures, colors, etc...) since most of us are within the Arabian Peninsula, or Middle Eastern countries. Chances are, we'll be able to see variations of a similar style (translated into Tagalog as... Pagkakaisa sa Pagkakaiba).
I liked the composition techniques you applied, ensuring that you are showing details of the structures without blowing-out on the highlights of the sky portions. Mabruk!

fidel_mercado 11-07-2006, 12:27 AM I agree with Jose, the way you captured both the details of the buildings and the colors of the sky is great! :) Good shooting Manuel. :)
jose_deluna 11-07-2006, 12:32 AM The characteristics of the sky and cloud formation varies a lot in various parts of Saudi Arabia... sometimes it's too dull, sometimes it's all blue, in most cases it's hazy... but there are times that you'll be amazed by such beautiful sky as this one...

Wow very nice capture , the color is great. I know what you mean about the sky in the Middle East sometimes it is very dull, hazy , and no clouds at all. By chance i come across this wonderfull cloud formation here Sharjah and wasted no time to stop the car and pulled my D-70 . This is a lucky chance to have this kind of weather here in U.A.E.

sandro_mendoza 11-07-2006, 04:05 AM I totally agree with Manuel, that's it's very rare to get nice skies here in Mid-east. We have to wait for winter months here to see some real cloud formations. After a long wait for the end of summer, I finally got a chance to shoot with some clouds in the skies two weeks ago at Madinat Jumeirah here in Dubai...

jose_deluna 11-07-2006, 06:55 PM i like this bridge shot very much!! :)
Hi Vernes... this bridge connects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Al-Khobar) to the Kingdom of Bahrain. It's only a 15-minute drive from Al-Khobar to Bahrain. I'm reminded of San Juanico Bridge everytime I cross the KSA-Bahrain Causeway Bridge. Pinoys and other expats usually cross the bridge on weekends to be able to unwind from the gruels of work during the workdays. Of course, while in Bahrain we are able to drink (alcohol), eat pork, listen to live band music (sometimes with live dancers on your table), watch movies at theaters, and act normally and freely. Bahrain happens to be an open country, very similar to UAE and Kuwait.
That reminds me... I may be crossing the bridge tomorrow evening to fetch guest from Philippine Embassy who'll be visiting KSA via Bahrain... yippppeeeeee, makaka-inom na naman ako :)!
vernes_go 11-07-2006, 07:06 PM hi Jose,

Hi Glen... those images are magnificent and simply astonishing captures! :) Very earthly and dating... sky and land effectively captured.
Welcome to this thread... i hope you can join and jam with us someday... our humble yet happy family of shooters are mostly based here in Saudi Arabia. Where are you located?
Glad to have you on board! :)
alex_paulino 11-12-2006, 06:14 PM Welcome Aboard Glen! Like what Ka Jose aka Mentor Jojo said earlier, you're welcome to join and jam with the rest of us. Back to Migs' guestion earlier, "what's your gear?" hoping you won't mind.

Im using a Nikon D70s with 10-20mm sigma lens on those shots.
It was taken in a place they called "ghost town" , it was an abandoned camp somewhere in Riyadh.
Cheers!

Nice Pano Orly, how are things?
share mo naman how you stiched that thing, and how'd you balanced your exposure ;)
orlando_arcelao_jr 11-19-2006, 03:18 PM Things are fine migs... Getting excited for the upcoming vacation! Hehehe!
Anyway, about the pano shot, all shots were taken in manual exposure mode with the same exposure settings, white balance and also focus distance. Converted the RAW files to JPEG using Nikon Capture NX and used AutoStitch (http://www.autostitch.net) for the stitching. A little bit of cropping to further improve the composition, then the usual retouching routines (contrast, saturation, sharpening, etc) to suit my own personal taste... :)
migsguerrero 11-19-2006, 03:22 PM ^ Nice info Orly, didn't you had a hard time with image barreling? If there was, howd you resolve it?
orlando_arcelao_jr 11-19-2006, 03:32 PM AutoStitch does the dirty things automatically Migs. It equalizes some minor exposure differences, corrects lens distortions and of course the tiresome stitching. All you have to do is feed the images to AutoStitch, wait, sit back and relax until it finishes the job! :)
migsguerrero 11-19-2006, 03:35 PM ^ you have such promising photos Orly, what sage like words can you share to your avid viewers and fans out there?
orlando_arcelao_jr 11-19-2006, 03:42 PM Migs naman... I'm still a newbie and doesn't deserve yet to be treated as a sage! I don't have a fanbase too... Hehehehe! Still too much to learn...
Thanks anyway for appreciating my works.... It really means a lot especially coming from an artist like you... :)

Jeff Vergara 11-22-2006, 08:07 PM continuation of the tour... now we go straight to 27th floor where there's a restaurant (great view btw to the jumeirah palm and the world projects) and areas for conferences. unfortunately, the resto is open and i wasn't allowed to take photos. anyway here's the elevator corridor:

now, to the other side, there are different conference rooms. the center one is called al falak ballroom where it occupies two floors. this floor is the highest a guest can go. the helipad area where federer and agassi played and so with tiger teed off were off limits.

Madain Saleh is one of the best known archeological sites in Saudi Arabia, located in the province of Ula (previously known as Dedan), some 400 kilometers north of Medina. Madain Saleh was once inhabited by the Nabataeans some 2000 years ago, Petra (located in Jordan) being the capital of the Nabataean kingdom. The Nabataeans are of Arab origin who became rich by their monopoly on the trade of incense and spice in particular between the east and the Roman, Greek and Egyptian empires.
The front of their dwellings are carved out from the mountains. Just above almost all the gates there are decorations of eagles and serpents. The inside of their dwellings are not identical as if they were built for different purposes. Some are small with low ceiling while others are more spacious.
If you intend to visit Madain Saleh and take some great shots, I would recommend you to bring your wide angle lenses especially when you would be shooting the inside of the tombs, you would not have enough space to move backwards to increase your angle of view. You will also make use of fast films (high ISO) or a tripod as the only aperture is the door which does not allow enough light to penetrate the tomb.
