View Full Version : JT photo Sigma lens calibration
rex doria 02-10-2009, 12:36 PM i find my sigma 24-70mm macro a bit soft at 2.8 at 70mm, i wanted JT to calibrate my lens. How long would it take? can I wait or see them how to calibrate my lens or i will leave my lens? will there be a cons and pros for calibration? thanks.
johnluthergarcia 02-11-2009, 10:26 AM Have you tried calling them up directly?
Francis Tuason 02-11-2009, 11:50 AM Sigma lens calibration takes about an hour or less only in JT, i just recently brought my sigma 30mm f/1.4 for calibration, and my friend's 70-200 f/2.8.
The two lenses was calibrated in about 1.5 hours...
Please bring your body, as they will test it with your actual body for verification of the calibration.
Francis Tuason 02-11-2009, 11:51 AM @mods...
this thread should be better under Sigma Section
rex doria 02-11-2009, 02:34 PM Have you tried calling them up directly?
called them this morning, i wanted tom but the person who do the calibration thing was on leave every thurs so i made an appointment this sat, and it would'nt take an hour. lens calibration time every 4pm-7pm only.

hi please correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't calibration fix only front focus and back focus issues? thanks! =)
rinaldiespera 02-25-2009, 01:04 PM I bought my 24-70 2.8 at Hong Kong, will JT calibrate it as well?
How much?
nicoreonisto 03-01-2009, 12:51 PM how will i know when i should have my sigma lens calibrated? (noob question)
I have an 18-125 DC OS HSM for 3 months now, and it's my walk aorund lens. so i use it a lot...
thanks to those who would answer :)
JasonTan 03-01-2009, 12:52 PM When I bought my Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 yesterday, Sir Jerome Tan himself calibrated the lens. It took no more than 20 minutes per calibration. :)
Yes I think calibration fixes back/front focusing issues. Maybe that's what makes the image soft? I'm not sure though.
They might allow calibration of units not bought from them. I didn't get the impression of strict exclusivity rules there. But then again, you have to confirm it from them.

There is a focus test chart that you can download somewhere here (http://focustestchart.com/chart.html). Plus instructions on how to proceed with the test.
You will know if you need calibration or not based on the result of that test.
I hope this helps. :)
erwingavino 03-04-2009, 05:30 PM If the sigma lens is not covered by warranty anymore, does JT charge for the lens calibration service?
WilsonCo 03-04-2009, 07:52 PM I was told that calibration is free even if unit is already out of warranty just as long as it's bought from them.
Eri Catral 04-19-2009, 06:15 PM I found out that my newly bought 24-70 (bought it from a friend, but he bought it at HK) is 1cm front focus at 70mm or about 1 battery (using AA battery test), and a little bit back focus at 24mm. How much would they charge for calibration if the lens is not bought from them?
Eri Catral 04-20-2009, 10:46 PM Brought my 24-70 to JT and paid 1,200 for calibration since the lens came from HK. But it's worth it. No more front focus at 70mm :). By the way, I got the lens after 1 hr :):)
WilsonCo 04-21-2009, 12:19 PM My friend who just got back from HK told me that New Sankyo can calibrate the Sigmas you buy from them.
jpenaflorida 05-29-2009, 06:50 PM Noob question here in lens calibration. Are there circumstances wherein a lens must be re-calibrated? And how will one know if it needs one? And asides from Front-Back focusing calibration, can other aspects of focusing needs to be re-calibrated? Let's say you want to calibrate the speed not the accuracy, is this possible?
noel guerrero 05-29-2009, 07:29 PM Basing on my past readings, I believe calibration is usually about front or back focusing. Focusing speed is a different matter. The focusing mechanism of a lens is purely mechanical and will depend on the speed of the body or lens motor and how fast the electronics locks on. But the highest speed is achieved on ideal conditions of sufficient lighting and contrast. Deviate in any of the two and focusing speed will be affected.
Daniel Cercado 09-01-2009, 08:45 PM I recently had my 30 1.4 calibrated. I was surprised that Jan Tan personally worked on it. He really is friendly and very accomodating. Kudos to you Jan if you're reading this.
Based on his initial tests, the lens front-focused. Once calibrated, it focused properly. Now, I'm a happy boy. :)
Calibration only takes a short while. It's short you can wait in the store.
I had mine calibrated for the camera body, and for flash use. I didn't know those two were different.
The good thing is that my lens now focuses properly on both my D70 and D200. In some cases, changing the camera body may need re-calibration. So it's important to bring the camera body you plan to use the lens on most of the time when you have your lens calibrated.
If you need calibration, just call Sigma so you can be scheduled. =)
joseph barretto 09-29-2009, 11:39 PM I have two lenses that I want to bring in for calibration. A Sigma 12-24 f4-5.6, and a Sigma 70-200 f2.8. Do i need to bring my 5d for calibration as well? Does anyone know how much they charge for units that were not bought from them?
Thanks!
joseph barretto 09-29-2009, 11:40 PM Brought my 24-70 to JT and paid 1,200 for calibration since the lens came from HK. But it's worth it. No more front focus at 70mm :). By the way, I got the lens after 1 hr :):)
oops, I guess that answers my question. But is that the standard charge? Or does it differ per lens?
dondavies 10-29-2009, 11:05 PM just brought my 24-70 f2.8 HSM and my 70-200 f2.8 HSM II for calibration and now it takes great shots... while I was there bought an 18-50 f2.8-4.5 OS and had it calibrated as well...
for those buying sigma lenses its best to have it calibrated just to make sure, you will loose nothing by having this done...
btw, its best to bring your camera along as well so that you can check the lens after...
nikkiesteban 11-04-2009, 09:28 PM I also have 24-70mm f2.8. It was calibrated a month ago. but i think it's not sharp as it should be. Should I bring it in for recalibration again?

Did you have it calibrated together with your camera?
johnluthergarcia 11-16-2009, 02:54 PM Btw, how do they test the calibration at JT Photo?
I'm using a focusing sheet (made for the D70 though) and using inanimate objects such as batteries. Mine has a bit of front focus at 200mm only... can their calibration methods correct that?

They also use a focusing sheet to determine if there is front or back focus then they calibrate the lens.
johnluthergarcia 11-17-2009, 03:34 PM I see, thanks... will try to bring my lens in the near future. My camera already has an adjustment for FF/BF is already optimized (based on my personal testing) for my lens... my only problem right now is at the 200mm end of my lens... but 190mm & below it's spot-on.
Marc Ayende 04-16-2010, 10:27 PM One quick question:
How much is it to have my non-JT Sigma lens calibrated in JT?
RTeddy Natividad 05-15-2010, 08:43 PM newbe here. thanks to this thread bec. I was wondering why sometimes the focus is a bit off
arnoldcarlsancover 06-30-2010, 07:56 PM How are they going to calibrate the lens? Are they going to dismantle it or what?
neil_ramirez 10-29-2010, 10:55 AM does it have a really big difference if the lens got calibrated?got a 18-200hsm.
yohandelacruz 10-29-2010, 12:00 PM does it have a really big difference if the lens got calibrated?got a 18-200hsm.
they say that if it ain't broken don't fix it. basically you have your lens calibrated only if it's not focusing properly, or if it's not as sharp as it was before.

you got a point there sir.thanks. i guess, i'm just got used to a guitar. even thoough not broken but still needs to be calibrated for better performance.:D

hehehe yeah well, true with what you say with the guitar.
jason_chavez 11-17-2010, 04:12 PM does it have a really big difference if the lens got calibrated?got a 18-200hsm.
where did you get your copy sir?... if its from jt, u can have them check if it has FF/BF for free.
yohandelacruz 11-17-2010, 04:47 PM ^ if the lens was bought from JT, calibration itself is free, not just the checking.
