MTF (resolution)
As to be expected for a lens in this price class the AF-S 17-55mm DX is a pretty impressive performer regarding resolution but it is not a lens without flaws. The center resolution of the lens is extremely high straight from the max. aperture regardless of the focal length. At medium aperture settings it reaches the resolution limits of the D200 sensor.
At 17mm the borders as well as the extreme borders are pretty decent even at f/2.8 and very good at medium aperture settings. Unfortunately there's a weak spot at 24mm where the extreme borders are quite soft at f/2.8 but from f/4 and up they catch up quite nicely. At 35mm the borders are on a pretty high level straight from f/2.8. Same goes for the 55mm setting though the borders don't really reach the high levels of the other tested focal lengths anymore.
The lens exhibited a quite high degree of residual spherical aberrations (focus shift when stopping down) at 24mm as well as strong field curvature at 17mm. ..."

Has anyone experienced, heard about, any problems with a 17-55 2.8 DX recently. I was wondering if they have ironed out the soft on one side issues. I only ask because I will order from overseas (adorama) and returning faulty stuff is expensive plus the U.S. issued nikon stuff only has a U.S. warranty...."
There are several Forum Threads that talk about the hallmarks as well as the issues of the 17-55mm. A search in Nikon cafe, DPReview, and Nikonian.org will provide you more info.

It sure does look longer- yes, nice to have a choice of Light Grey or Black, :) But wouldnt that (Light Grey) be susceptible to hand marks, oil, dirt, visible scratch marks specially out in the open, streets, fields, etc.?
Here's what I'd like to have my hands on some day and it's quite elusive (hard to find and often Out Of Stock), I may call this the White Beast or Yeti (Abominable Snowman)... My ever growing wishlist!!!

Hi Mikeli!
Please see post #11 of this thread, page 2.
Let me add also, that prior to my purchase of this wonderful lens, I did a lot of net searching like anyone else would and I encountered some owners/users of this lens as to complaining about the "soft" images they were getting from the lens. In fact, some owners had to go thru 2,3 copies before getting a good, sharp copy(lens).

A few returned for an exchange, while some had Nikon service repair the lens.
It's a stellar performer, excellent quality with very good color rendition for the great majority of this particular lens. It was just sad that a few blemishes in production affected the final lens quality. And this minor blemishes didnt stop me, it has rewarded me with quality images true of its reputation as one of Nikons great lens.

The light grey units are sometimes available in B&H or Adorama. They're not always available. It usually cost about $60-$100 more than the black units. :) I know of someone who can source them for you but the price difference last I heard, much more than a $100.

That's right physically heavier and bigger(longer) too. That 12-80 f/2.8 lens is a great idea, however it could easily displace a lot of nikkor lenses (12-24, 17-35, 17-55, and 28-70), and these are pretty much Nikon's best sellers and performers - it'll hurt its product lines. It's fun to dream on these Nikon lenses...:)

Hi Cesar,
It's either they have it already, or they have the 70-200 f2.8 VR. I just got the 80-200 f2.8 a few weeks ago, and being the first item in my wish list, it was also the first to be crossed out. If you can afford a 70-200 VR, go for it, otherwise, the 80-200 is an awesome lens and it won't disappoint you. The only downside is it's weight.

hmm... hassy for sale?!? if only i could afford it. hahahaha
archie simtoco 08-04-2006, 05:55 PM yup hehe. it seems that when I get my "dream" lens a new lens starts becoming more attractive. I do need this one for the fireworks shoot that I do most every weekend. They change the veneu again to a very narrow area where I can only use a wide lens to get the full coverage of the show.

It's for Macro shots. Nikon names their macro lenses as micro. Maybe if one wants to see some microscopic features of their subjects. It is also a very good portrait lens. The only problem is that you really have to get close to your subject for macro shots. Now I want a 105mm Micro....A lot of people swears by the sharpness of this lens. However, if I have the chance again, I think the 105mm would be a better buy, but that's just me. Some would like to really get close to their subjects for their macro shots.

I do not have a 105 VR (I really want one if only if I have the money to feed my NAS) but yes, max apperture you see in your viewfinder changes as you focus closer and reach 1:1 magnification. This is the effective apperture and not the actual apperture. The beauty of the new macro lenses is it sends the effective apperture to your camera. For more info you can find a nice thread at nikonians.org regarding macro lens apperture here (http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&om=1927&forum=DCForumID6&omm=1&viewmode=threaded).
You can also find a nice review of the lens here (http://hackyourtoys.blogspot.com/2006/05/nikon-105mm-f28g-if-ed-af-s-vr-micro.html). The review includes the max effective apperture vs. magnification.

Thanks, Nap...that bit about using it as a portrait lens was what I was expecting to hear (other thn the obvious purpose of using it for macro shots). And the 105 looks like a good idea for th reason you mentioned. thanks again.

I'd recommend further testing, because I'm very happy with the 17-55. As a 2.8 zoom, it's a lens I always use. There are problems when it comes to consistency of the copy you get, but I'm fortunate to have a good one. Check out this thread from nikoncafe.com:

yup ive been keeping an eye on that thread for some time now as well as other threads pertaining to the subject. just surprised how these mediocre lenses get through Nikon qc. anyway what i also meant to say was that im so relatively new in the DP game that my eye cannot yet appreciate the benefits the 17-55 has to offer. the l7-55 is still in my wishlist but has been bumped down by several primes

Gil Penaflorida 09-14-2006, 10:47 AM Yes Zandy it can hold it's own but definitely not for fast shoots.... one advantage is it's very light and has a push pull built in hood ....perfect balance in my D70 better yet with my D200 with the grip on it

Manuel Libres Librodo 09-14-2006, 11:00 AM # 1: 17-55 f2.8 : I've seen the results. Amazing colors. I also want to have wider angle for my portraits. Quite tired of tightly cropped portraits.
#2: 12-24 Nikkor (is it f4.5?) I have a 12-24 Sigma lens. I have good shots with it. But I know I can do better. Somehow, the sigma colors doesn't give me the kicks. It's not so sharp. Not edgy. It seems that the skin color bleeds to the abckground. Not with the Nikon lens. I can easily separate my subjects from the background. I hardly need to post-process my shots with my Nikon lenses than with the sigma. No offense meant but I wish I had bought the Nikon instead despite the higher price.

i have a nikon 105mm dc. pretty good and useful but i find this to be a gimmick lens or maybe i just havent gotten accustomed to the dc feature:) . i hardly use it now that i have the 85 which in my opinion has more appealing and endearing qualities.
Sonny Thakur 09-23-2006, 09:36 AM Would you mind posting any sample shots? Im in the market for a new lens. Was actually considering something around the price range of a Nikkor 105 micro or the 90mm tamron like what TJ has. :)

Sonny, if you're in the market for a micro lens... the best micro around the 90mm range is the one made by Tokina... If you can get that... You won't be sorry.

zandy_marantal 09-23-2006, 10:56 AM Hi Sonny,
Also got the 105mm f/2 DC. My initial tests with it and the 105mm VR showed that the VR was sharper and more contrasty. (Sorry, I deleted the images). The defocus control on my lens looks like it needs recalibration though. The lens was at its sharpest at at the Front 2 setting(it should be at the neutral position). The lens is at Nikon right now and won't be back until the middle of October.
I'm sure Carlo would be able to provide you with some sample shots when he gets back.
regards.

zandy. im actually considering selling my 105dc for the 105vr. i really cant justify owning another cream machine since the 85mm already fills that bill and has a more suitable focal range. btw i am still yet to own a macro lens.
so whats on your wishlist sir? 200-400? 300f2.8? you have a lot of lenses in my wishlist!

Yes, I still have it. I think it's a keeper. I believe Earl has one as well.
Any questions about the lens?
Sonny Thakur 09-24-2006, 12:45 PM Sample shots please? :D Cause I just realized the 105mm VR and the 80-200 f/2.8 AF-S are about the same price... Just trying to weigh my options really. Does it work well for portraits?

Hey Carlo,
You may not believe it, but I think I'm done as far as lenses. :) Longer lenses don't appeal to me as I'm not a birder and I don't shoot sports. Maybe when the kids grow up and start playing sports in school
I got the 105 DC because Bjorn rates it so highly and the DC feature kind of intrigued me. But I agree that it's kind of redundant with the 85mm 1.4. We shall see once I get it back from Nikon if it's a keeper or not.
regards.
Sonny Thakur 09-24-2006, 01:05 PM Zandy, if you have sample shots from the 105mm DC and the 105mmVR could you email them to me? or post some here?
zandy_marantal 09-24-2006, 01:43 PM Sample shots please? :D Cause I just realized the 105mm VR and the 80-200 f/2.8 AF-S are about the same price... Just trying to weigh my options really. Does it work well for portraits?
Sonny, here's a sample shot.

I was also playing with my new flash diffuser (http://www.dembflashdiffusers.com (http://www.dembflashdiffusers.com/)) and looks like it did the job pretty well. I guess I won't need an L-bracket anymore.
Going back to the lens. If the the 80-200mm AF-S is about the same price(the 105mm VR is $200 cheaper than the 80-200 AF-S in the US), I would say go for that if portraiture is what you're after. Now, if you love macro, then the choice is obvious.
regards.
Earl Gonzalez 09-24-2006, 01:51 PM Was suppose to take the plunge on the 105 DC as well but decided to hit the brakes on this one... Yup redundancy issue... :)
@ Zandy - Nice portrait of your daughter.
@ Sonny - 105 VR is a warm-contrasty lens... I'll bring it on the food EB later. :)

Thanks bro.
Sonny Thakur 09-24-2006, 02:00 PM Does look slightly warm but the contrast is amazing.
This is gonna be one heck of a decission.

I'd give you a hint on how this lens appeals to me... Ever since I got this glass; my 85s have more extended times of rest to the point that they become almost absolutely expensive paper weights... Something to really ponder on but your mileage may vary.
Carlo_Carlos 09-24-2006, 08:21 PM Having read all your wish list, na tempt na din ako mag post.

Jovit_Morando 09-28-2006, 06:56 AM just sharing.
i was at starbucks magallanes yesterday, when a photographer dropped by. he was carrying two bodies, noticed the lens on the camera at his front. Thought it was canon coz it was white. When he passed by me, noticed that it was the grey nikon lens on a D1x. Wow. first time i saw the grey lens. The guy was carrying another body on his side with a wide angle lens but not the grey one.
