View Full Version : Southern Quest: Year 2
danpagulayan 02-06-2009, 11:57 PM Ok, here I am again. As I remember, I made a call sometime in Q4 2007 about a Marinduque EB. Not much happened from that call.
But, it looks like guerilla-like forays worked in 2008. Private invites seemed to have worked (see links below).
This is Joel Garcia's photo of that first event.

Time to rekindle the start of the Southern Quest Series.
This time, it may be opportune to make a public call once more. So, I'm making this public invite
I'm making a trip to Marinduque this February (could be on Feb 20 or Feb 26) and it's now time to make that invite.
Max of 3 photogs, just like last year's first adventure, to join me in this trip. Minimal expenses. Good photo skills are a plus, though.
Send me email (via DPP console) if your wish to join. Cut-off is on Valentine's Day.
Thanks.

danpagulayan 02-08-2009, 10:24 AM Randy, very well noted.
The February trip is a prelude to the Semana Santa series that I plan to have for DPP members (assuming there are takers). The Holy Week is taken seriously in Marinduque -- it is a one-week festival that starts the weekend before the palm Sunday weekend.
A repost from last year's Holy Week trip:

ChrisMontano 02-08-2009, 12:54 PM oooh... Nice... like the holy week one the most...
danpagulayan 02-10-2009, 05:23 AM Update: I am now looking at a Feb 20-22 trip.
danpagulayan 03-12-2009, 08:57 AM Hi All, the Moriones Festival in Marinduque is a week-long affair. For this year, I expect it to happen from April 4 to 11. That's only three weeks from now.
Check out last year's activities here: http://www.marinduque.gov.ph/moriones.htm. Transpo guides are also downloadable from that page.
I will be heading there on April 3 and will be back in Manila on April 12. It would be nice if DPPers can join me to cover the event and have some R&R. I can take 8 DPPers (including their family, if that's the arrangement). You can come anytime during that week, although it's preferrable that you leave Manila no later than April 7, Tuesday.
Accommodations are free of charge.
A number of you have already signified your intention (Franz, Randy, etc.). I would like to know if your interest still holds.
List up if you wih to join:

OT: dan, did you get lloyd's and my email regarding readers gallery?
danpagulayan 03-12-2009, 09:02 AM Hi Nino, if you wish to help organize this, you're certainly welcome. It could be a DPP-member-only gig or a DPP members+family activity. More space is available for those who may want to pop their tents in the garden.
OT: I'll be heading to your offices this morning to submit the photo and to renew subscription.
jasonmiraples 03-12-2009, 09:54 AM Thanks for the head-ups Dan!
I really want to go back to the South but I cannot make it this time. I am going far North by April 10 to 12. And I know that you know that day job is killing our passion in clicking our shutter...
Have fun and looking forward for DPP'ers takes on this Part 2 Quest!
God bless you more!

joelhgarcia 03-25-2009, 09:10 AM Sir Dan- So ilan na yung head count for SQ2?
danpagulayan 03-25-2009, 10:52 AM Two backed out today. Confirmed photogs now number 6 in all. This is an ideal number.
Winston Baltasar 03-25-2009, 11:05 AM Wish we could join you, Dan! We have great, indelible memories from last year's Moriones, thanks to you and your lovely family. But the wifey is preggy and in a sensitive state. Looking forward to your photos!
danpagulayan 03-27-2009, 12:09 PM Hi Winston, let's plan for SQ 3 :)
By the way, there have been text an PM inuiries on how to get to Marinduque. Here are excerpts from http://marinduque.gov.ph/gettingthere.htm
http://marinduque.gov.ph/gettingthere002.jpg
By Air
Marinduque is only 40 minutes away from Manila by air. Zest Air (http://www.zestair.com.ph/) flies to Marinduque four times a week (MO/WE/FR/SU). Flight 6K-325 leaves Manila at 11:00 A.M. and arrives in Marinduque at 11:40 A.M. The return flight 6K-324 leaves at 12:10 P.M. and arrives in Manila at 1:00 P.M.
Discounted rates ranges from PhP488.00 to PhP1,309.00 while regular rates ranges from PhP1,429.00 to PhP4,159.00 depending on how early you book prior to your departure. A discount of 20% is given to Senior Citizens (60 years old and above) computed based on the regular fare. Baggage allowance is 10kls. and excess baggage is charged PhP84.00 per kilo. Terminal fee at Manila Domestic Airport is PhP200.00, while at Marinduque Airport it is only PhP20.00.
For further inquiries call their booking office at 311-16-23 (Marinduque) or 888-2003 (Manila).
Comment: This is the most convenient way to get there. However, it's costly and, by this time, all seats may already have been taken.
danpagulayan 03-27-2009, 12:21 PM LAND-SEA TRAVEL: By Bus
From Manila, take a bus bound for Talao-talao Port, Lucena City. Such buses (Tritran, Dela Rosa, Lucena Lines, JAM Transit and JAC Liner (http://jacliner.com/routes.html)) are available at their terminals in Buendia corner Taft Ave. and at Kamias Road, Quezon City corner EDSA.
For passengers bound for Mogpog, Boac, Gasan and Buenavista, take a ferry (http://www.montenegrolines.com.ph/msli_web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=93&Itemid=9)or fastcraft to Balanacan Port, Mogpog. From Balanacan Port, take a jeepney, FX or other air-conditioned vans servicing the four municipalities.
For those bound to Sta. Cruz and Torrijos take a ferry to Buyabod Port. In Buyabod Port, take a tricycle ride to the town center of Sta. Cruz where passenger jeepneys bound for Torrijos, Mogpog and Boac are available. http://marinduque.gov.ph/gettingthere003.jpg http://marinduque.gov.ph/gettingthere004.jpg (http://www.montenegrolines.com.ph/msli_web/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=93&Itemid=9)
You can also drive your way to Marinduque. The RORO boat can bring your car to the island.
DIRECT TRAVEL
1. Via JAC LINER BUS (once a day)
JAC Liner plies a direct Manila-Marinduque route. Their buses leaves at 8:00 in the evening daily from their terminals at Kamias and Buendia. For reservation call (02) 404-2073.
2. Via Door-to-Door Van (once a day)
Air-contioned vans also offer similar service. They fetch you right at your doorsteps and drop you off to your point of destination in Marinduque. For reservation call (0917)8369900, (0917)2014852, (0919)4537219, (0917)4665777 and (02)6464717, 09105531662, 09163119248, 09198863692.
Caution: If you're to take the Land/Sea transpo, I strongly suggest you leave for Lucena on Tuesday afternoon, at the latest, to avoid getting bumped off the ship. By Tuesday night, the regular ship schedule is usually suspended. Instead, the ship follows a broken schedule, where it leaves port whenever it gets full.
joelhgarcia 03-27-2009, 12:23 PM Sir Dan, So who are the 6 photogs who will join this SQ2?
danpagulayan 03-27-2009, 12:25 PM Joel, they're personal friends from college and relatives from abroad. Like me, they'll be there for photos and R&R.

Joel, no fixed IT yet, as I do not yet know for certain on which days the guests will arrive.
Tentatively, here's my own plan:
Wednesday: Sunrise shoot at Torrijos; Brick factory visit; hot springs at Buenavista; Sunset shots at Buenavista
Thursday: Sunrise, cemetery, curch, and market shots at Sta Cruz; Beach shots at Mogpog, Sunset shots at Boac, Procession shots
Friday: Moriones shots at Boac and Gasan
In all these days, there will be lots of opps to shoot the Morions.
May you hazard your suggestion, based on theFestival Schedule that I provided you?

See you soon!
leandresguevara 04-05-2009, 03:10 PM sir dan
puede po ba na sumabay ,me and my wife,sa mga pictorial tours nyo.i ll be coming from gasan.well be there week long.
thanks
danpagulayan 04-12-2009, 08:45 PM Lean, it was a pleasure meeting you in Boac. Thanks for taking the initiative to ask who I was during the Battle of the Morions. Sorry for not having replied on time, as I was all around the place to make sure that the water supply at our place was adequate.
Anyway, here's a short report to all of you regarding Southern Quest: Year 2
1. It was not the sort of EB I envisioned, as only Joel and Maan eventually joined me. The other photogs just got caught up in the chaos and mess at Talao-Talao Pier in Lucena.
2. I got to meet Lean and other DPP/Pipho folks like Jun, Joy, Anton, and Raymond Nepomuceno (a Morion and pure-blooded Pipho)
3. I did not get to shoot much.
4. Think about these replies during one of my chance meetings with some photographers:
4.1 "Siya ba talaga si Joel Garcia? Wow, galing!!!!"
4.2 "Ano iyan? Paano mo ginawa iyan?" -- when one photog saw Joel's 1-hour old photo
Hmmm.....
At any rate, I look forward to SQ III next year.
Joel will create the cover photo.
jasonmiraples 04-13-2009, 08:34 AM Miss this one Dan! Thanks for the details and time to make "kwento" LOL!!!
Those words is kind of familiar and not too new for Joel I think. :D:D:D
And I'm happy that you meet Jun in your place!
