I just wanted to know from the experts if given to choose between the Canon EF-S 17-85 F/4.5-5.6 or Tamron 17-50 F/2.8, which will be a keeper for you?

I agree. As much as I wanted to get the 24-70L or the new 17-55 IS, it's really out of my budget for now, hopefully next year na. So I am thinking about between this 2 lenses which weighs better than the other just for my temporary lens.

thinking of this two as well. since the canon 17-55 2.8 IS is way too expensive.

from the net the 17-85 offers flexibility. the tamron on the other hand seems to win in the sharpness department and low light advantage with its wider aperture.

choices, choices... :D

Roro, a month ago I decided to buy the Tamron 17-50 as my temporary lens since I just couldn't fit yet the canon 24-70 in my budget.

I never regretted the move. It's very fast (yet a bit noisy), very sharp (sharper than the 50mm prime), and highly reliable in low light situations ( I shoot weddings so this wide opening comes in handy since I seldom use flash), and it's only PhP25000!

I suggest if temporary lens is what you're after, this lens would be it.:)

Thanks for the inputs Bryan. I think I'm leaning to the Tammy now but Avenue does not have it on stock now and is on order basis as of my last communication with Wilson earlier this evening. I kinda need it by Tuesday next week :(

Roro, here's Henry's number: 7337723 . The Canon mounts sell fast so let's just cross our fingers and hope they still have one in stock for you.:)

Yeah I was about to order from Wilson but he said it is not on stock and by order basis only. So, I'm still kinda holding back for I plan to wait for a few more months and stretch my budget to get the 17-40L instead.

Now my new question for the expert now stands.. Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 or Canon 17-40 f/4L?

you might be interested in the tokina 16-50 2.8....not out yet, long overdue but people are very excited about it. Lets hope it doesnt do a "sigma 50-150 2.8".

but if you were gonna use it for low light photography then there is no reason to get the 17-40L. Coz

1) the 17-50 can go longer
2) the 17-50 is 2.8
3) the 17-50 is 20-25k versus 30-32k (used) for the 17-40

the only reasons i can see for you to choose 17-40 are
1) if youre into this "no other lens but canon L lenses" type of thing.
2) you got loads of cash
3) you like weather sealing on all your lenses

Yeah I read all around the net of the long wait for the Tokina 16-50 f/2.8.. but why are they taking so long?

your guess is as good as mine....they also have this 35-150 2.8 i think...not so sure about the lineup but they have some long awaited pieces coming out soon. And tokinas are built like tanks too....

I was initially thinking of getting the Tammy as a temporary lens for I do intend to go Canon lenses in the future. I'll just weigh things again so that I could decide between the 2. Thanks to the inputs Chris :)
