View Full Version : Food Lenses?
ronaldo acop 11-03-2006, 09:54 AM Hi! Hello! I'v recently fallen in love with digital photgraphy and would like to delve into food and product shots. I was just wondering what type of lens do professional food photographers most often utilize in their shoots? I saved enough money and finally took the plunge and bought a Canon 20D.
Moreover, would anyone know of a good class or seminar that teaches basic/intro to food photography? (other than PCCI with Mark Floro):) Website/s also appreciated. Thank you so much!

One of the moderators here, Jo Avila, holds a seminar on food photography from time to time. You may PM him for details.
dindin_lagdameo 11-03-2006, 10:13 AM I love shooting food (and eating them, too) and I use a 60mm f/2.8 micro nikkor lens.
mario_bes 11-03-2006, 10:53 AM i use a 28-135 IS zoom :)

+12345 :)
Ronaldo, i think a lens with macro capabilities is more approriate for food photography :)
bernard billedo 11-03-2006, 12:49 PM If you're on a budget, a 50 1.8 is highly recommended. A midrange lens would be the 60mm EF-S Macro or the 100mm 2.8 If you've got a big budget, a tilt-shift lens is very handy especially when keeping everything sharp.
Carlo R. Lopez 11-03-2006, 06:02 PM i dont have a macro but i make do with a 50mm 1.4d and even a 17-55.
angelo_lopez 11-03-2006, 06:17 PM so a macro lens is like a magnifying lens?
pardon the ignorance :)
Earl Gonzalez 11-03-2006, 06:21 PM Macro lenses, PC lenses or those TS lenses for Canon... :)
Sau_Potonia 11-03-2006, 06:32 PM so a macro lens is like a magnifying lens?

I think its the type of lens that allows you to focus with a minimal distance from the lens up to your subject... for more close up shots...
Please guys do enlighten me also with regards to macro lenses. Isn't it that all lens has a macro function?
levi lacandula 11-04-2006, 01:06 PM im no pro but i do love the discipline (food photography). i use my 105 f/2.8 and 50 f/1.8 on most of my food shots. i've not attended any workshop/seminar for food photography. (i guess someday... hehehe).
if you're interested you can join us on the 2nd food photography EB. watch out for the details :)
cris_servillas 11-04-2006, 01:10 PM all macro lenses works on this type of job!

yep, thats so true!
but ive seen a very talented photographer who only uses his trusty 50mm f/1.8 on all of his food shots. :)
a macro lens would give you more versatility though.:)
Alan Fontanilla 11-06-2006, 12:32 AM The 50 mm 1.8 is a good start ... its not exactly a macro lens - but at P4k - its well worth it. Good for low light portraits too!
ronaldo acop 11-06-2006, 01:42 AM wow! thank you all for your posts! i feel very welcome! have a great day to everyone! at least i have an idea on what lens to research about! :)
