I kinda stumbled on to this trick when I was first studying the thirds rule and cropping last year.
At first I just made a thirds grid from vector shapes in PS overlayed on the image to help me get the hang of the focus points. I completely forgot about the gridlines feature until I accidentally pressed ctrl+' while trying to unhide my guides (ctrl+;).
I looked at the Guides, Grid & Slices preferences and obviously, there was a percentage division option. So I entered 33.33% and voila, a perfect Thirds Grid for every image size and resolution without the extra layer!
Alot of my friends and coworkers never thought of this simple trick as well before I showed it them and were frankly amazed of the simple solution. So for anyone who hasn't gotten around with this trick, I hope this helps.
