im what you could call a newbie, just wondering what flash to get for my 300d and does canon have that wire thingy that could be placed on the hot shoe and you can connect to your flash?

it's up to you which one. there is a wire thingy called hot shoe off camera cord.

I think it's called the Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord or the OCSC. it is available locally for a little less than P3k.
