I'm having my prints framed to give away as gifts this Christmas.

I'm in a dilemma. I've searched the web ang got differing ideas. Now, I would like to obtain your thoughts on the following issues:

Is it normal practice for photographers to affix their signatures on their photos, just as painters do in their paintings?

If so, where does one affix it?

Thanks.:)

dan i think it's a personal preference (but pretty common & normal) …and if i did, i'd put mine on the lower right corner :)

David, you crack me up!

Dan, either you write your signature with a pen like Joel suggests or a well designed digital signature a-la-Manny Librodo would work, too.

Be proud of your work. Many years from now, the owners of your photos may point to your signatures and say your name with the same reverance as if they said, Rembrandt or Cartier-Bresson or Tong.

Leave a DNA specimen, like sign with blood or something... Dunno, just think of the authenticity of that :) But definitely sign it :D

LOL. :D

For me, I think it's also just a personal preference. It's your photo to begin with, anyway. :)

Thanks, folks. Some people say that signing it is tantamount to defacing the photo. Some say it's just right.

I was thinking of licking the lower right portion (twe, twe, twe), just like antelopes and lions in the wild do in marking their territory, but I thought twice, as this may leave acid traces, just like blood would do.:D:D:D

I also bought some metallic ink pens of diff colors (silver, green, red, blue, and gold), but I had a problem with the blending mode (no such thing as luminosity, overlay, etc.):D:D:D

I'm leaning towards signing...

When you print it, have a small space between the actual photo and the matting of the frame. In that space you can sign. Right or left your choice. In this way, your signature is in the actual printed paper but not in the actual photo.

Here's a visual :)

... or if you have a personal logo, you can use it instead of your sig.

Hi Red, thanks for this novel idea. :)

I was thinking of a variation - that of enlarging the matting a bit, so there's a marging between the matting's edge and the photo's 4 edges (the bottom portion having a larger margin to accommodate the signature).

That would also work :)
Have a look at it from afar so that you'll see how the framing will compliment your work. If your not happy, you can always change the mat dimensions.

oh, you could also write the series number of the print against the number(s) you plan to print beside your signature. Like 1/10 or 1/1 (uy special!)

Or, create some sort of a tag, preferably metal stamp (like a dog tag or a mini license plate type) and mount that with the mat, that way you can stamp a larger font for the image title, then your name underneath. If you're giving this away, sign at the BACK of the image instead.

Personally, I like using Dong-A gel pens (available from National Bookstore) to sign my prints.

The ink adheres well to almost any paper surface (i.e. photolab prints, Canon Fine Art Paper, etc.).

Cheers!

OK, I'll hurry off to NBS to check out Dong-A. I hope they come in a variety of colors and all.

Now the decision is made, I'LL SIGN on the margins of the photo. The photo title and shoot date, I'll inscribe at the back (on the margins).

Thanks, fellow DPPers!!!!
