View Full Version : Leaving camera in parked car under direct sunlight
angelo_lopez 10-26-2006, 08:59 PM In line with bringing your camera everywhere, is it safe to leave your camera inside your car that is parked under direct sunlight? I know temperatures inside the car can get really high during these situations so I'm wondering if its safe. Most of my other "toys" (tennis racket, bowling ball) are forbiden to be left inside park cars in direct sunlight but not sure about my new toy
Common sense in me dictates NO but I'm just a newbie so I'm not sure if these cameras are really made of sterner stuff and its safe to leave them inside :)
Earl Gonzalez 10-26-2006, 09:05 PM Just don't do something you know you'll regret... And IMO this is certainly one of them. :)
David Tong 10-26-2006, 09:08 PM Really depends on your definition of "direct"...
Technically speaking, direct sunlight means that the item(s) is placed directly where the sunrays are capable of hitting it.
If you place your gear inside a bag, and on the floor of a vehicle, for example, I don't think you need to worry much about it.
I'm sure that your camera is more resistant to heat (oven-like convection heat) than, let's say, your CDs inside the car, your Ipod, radio, etc.
Now, placing the gear on the dash or rear deck will be pretty obvious that your gear will be toasted hehe.

Not only toasted but stolen as well. And for sure you will have a broken window which is difficult to claim from your insurance .:(
Aris Guerrero 10-26-2006, 09:36 PM and to add to all the cons listed above, the aperture blades' grease may break down into oil and may result to stuck apertures. doesn't happen to all though :)
benji_balmoris 10-27-2006, 01:40 AM That was precisely the reason why I brought my camera along with me whenever I parked my car in parking lots. I was afraid of it getting damaged or worse stolen if i just left it there. Trouble is, i always get into heated arguments with security guards in the mall whenever they try to inspect my camera bag using their metal sticks!
Carlo R. Lopez 10-27-2006, 12:19 PM would you leave a fragile newborn baby in the car? i rest my case:)
angelo_lopez 10-27-2006, 01:56 PM Is there a bag/case then that can provide protection from the heat? Are pelicans heat proof?

Oh the Nikkor 35mm f/2 D is prone to this... :)

i really try to avoid situations like this. it's best to bring it out and carry along even for the hassel, i wouldn't want to be responsible for breaking my camera and for the reason of laziness or stupidity.

same here. but i don't think its hotter..
darwinandres 10-27-2006, 05:26 PM Same here, but i think it's hotter inside the car cabin than the trunk 'coz the cabin has glass that are not quite heat proof compared to the metal trunk. I keep my camera inside my camera bag and leave it inside the trunk. No problem pa naman.

And also to shutter blades. It happened my EOS film once. All my shots were half blank.

I always inform them beforehand that it's a camera and specifically tell them not to poke inside the bag:Angry: with their STICKS.
kaihuang 10-28-2006, 03:18 PM i would worry more about my gears getting stolen in this country than getting toasted hehe

I agree  I actually leave my laptop in the car most of the time but never my camera.. hehehe
David Tong 10-30-2006, 04:08 PM Reminds me one time a friend of mine said he'd rather see his cluncker car get stolen than his golfset in the trunk since the golfset costs more than the car hehe.
Art Pineda II 03-20-2007, 05:35 PM i used to leave my film slr in the glove compartment.. I rarely used it thus my reason is, if a bring it in the car, i would utilize it more often.
ok naman sya.. workin pa din. hehehe
