Old school Nikon D1 (circa 99?), under 3megapixels.

If one was available for under 10K (body only), would you get it for a hobbyist (not pro)?

I'd assume that this should have a better/bigger sensor than higher point and shoot models, but is the resolution too "ancient"?

(If this was film, the decision would've been easier hehehe).

Just pondering.

I used to own one and I would get it again if it is sold at 10k in a heartbeat. It's built like an F5 and can take a lot of abuse. Dont worry too much about resolution if you dont print larger than an 8x12 or plan to crop your images. I only shot RAW with it since JPEG is not as good as with today's DSLR's. The only downside with this body including the D1X/D1H is the battery issue. It takes only 150-200 shots per charge and that is without chimping, take half of that if you chimp a lot.

Hehehe... I'll update you guys if I get lucky...

I rarely print over 8x10 anyway, even when I do, it'll only be for my kid's grandparents to frame at home, so it's not an issue for me... Most shots stay in flickr or in my hard drive only.

Thanks for the input... The sensor is 4x larger than my S40, that's good enough for me in terms of image quality (saw the full-size raw files from the web.)

Guys, need your quick inputs.... I don't wanna start another thread anymore since it's from the same scenario.

For the same price (10grand), would you prefer a D1 or a Canon D30? The latter comes with a charger and 128MB CF, the former (Nikon) only comes with a battery (no charger/memcard).

Both are in good "taken-care-by-a-pro-but-obviously-used-for-5-years" condition.

No charger? Hmmmm... But I read in dpreview that you can use the charger for the f100 in case wala ka mahanap na MH16 charger of the D1.

Although plus side for the D1 would be that its a pro body based on the F5, so it has a vertical grip. Downside is its heavy, because its all magnesium alloy.

but on that note Brent . . . protection is key . . . just like the D200 and the D2 series . . . magnesium alloy is way better than plastic any day :)

Well, when you buy a pro-spec. cam... You're also paying for the materials used to make the thing. :) I'll take magnesium anytime... Not unless they can find a way to make it Titanium instead, but it would be dead expensive. :)

Hi guys, unfortunately, since I didn't have internet when the bidding was about to close, I lost out on both units.

The D30 closed at 200UK (400+ USD) which would've made it quite expensive (could've bought a E-300 body, D50 or 350D already, while the Nikon closed out at 160UK only (shipping included).

Oh well, next time...

Thanks so much sa inputs and patience to my stupid, yet empty questions hehe.

(Musta Brent :D)

ahh... were you gonna it from ebay?

i was able to procure a d1 from ebay at a slightly higher price than that of what you mentioned. the price was low but not too low to make me doubt whether it had any serious mechanical/electronic problems.

it had the usual nikon d1 ailments: 'crimson'ess of some shots, rubber has expanded and peeled off and was glued back again(now its starting to peel off again), i get about 350 shots on the battery it came with, no zoom on the lcd, and 2.7mp, moderate cosmetic problems, and there was a missing door(which i found a replacement for.)

apart frot that, it works fine. i now need to clean the sensor. it works faster and gives me a better feel than a p&s. i can live with the 2.7mp since i dont need or i rarely have to print pics. 2.7 is still great even with mf lenses.

the magnesium alloy body would have literally hammered the d30's plastic body and the d1 would have shot faster. all of this at the cost of about half a mega pixel and iso100.

the d1 is an action camera and its what i wanted and got.

OT ayos lang. Photoghraphy naman kinalolokohan hehe. Gumawa na actually ng photo board sa AI nung down yun both forums. Kakaaddict magpost about photography kasi eh. hehe

Sayang, but then again, di pa perfect mga DLSR nung panahon na yan. So better off buying something newer. Why not look around for a used D70? Malapit nadin diyan yun naging closing price.
