Never had any complaints with Photomatix. Try experimenting with your production workflow - your problems in post-production may be attributable there.

quick question.. can you direct me to a workflow to create an HDR image?

i saw one before, i just remembered it said to take the exact same shots in varying exposure by adjusting the shutter speed.. that i did. now i don't know what to do next.

i'm using photoshop CS2 (but i don't have the merge to HDR function - must be missing a plugin), don't have any of the HDR programs (and not sure where/how to get them). also, i shoot in JPEG, is HDR still doable? or should i switch to RAW?

If i were to pp the first pic, i would reduce the yellow/orange cast that spreads on the blue sky and reduce the little noise/grains- but hey, that is just my personal preference.

Inspirational captures all!!! Here's my share....

The first time I saw this church, it was still being built way back when I got into racing (circa 1995). I actually pass by this big hunk of concrete every time I go to the track. Just recently, I was surprised to find bricks stuck into it.

I have to say, it kinda looks good and I can't wait for it to finish....I just hope it doesn't take another 10+ years!

Bracketing is about telling your DSLR to shoot multiple exposures of the same scene and it does exactly that. The theory is that every exposure will bring out different details not found in the other exposures and HDR is about combining all this exposures together in order to create a photograph that is very rich in details ( High Dynamic Range ).

Regarding how to implement it on a nikon, I'll let others answer coz I shoot canons. :D

as for your post, personally i would think that you only increase the contrast & saturation from a normal shot. but subject and framing is there already.:)

depends upon the artist's intention.

for me i prefer realistic look with sweet dynamic range.

I have a question for the HDR photographers here, what software do you use? Photomatix or the HDR in photoshop? Also, what are the other auxiliary programs you use, like noiseware or something like that? I can't seem to get crisp images or the right "feel" to my HDR shots.

I'm not too fond of the automated HDR in CS4 as it doesn't give me the same degree of control as PhotoMatix. Though I still do some refinements after in PS like sharpening via a high pass filter with around 10-30pixel radius.
As for noise, just stay below ISO400 as HDR will amplify noise.
To get the right feel, I suggest exposure bracketing of atleast 3 shots but I prefer 5 exposures.

Using a single JPEG isn't really advisable, the least you would go would be to use a single RAW and that'll result in only a pseudo HDR, to get the real thing, you need to get at least 3 exposures of a shot.
