it depends... If I'm alone my most used lens would probably be the 10-22 but if im with my good friend albert it would probably be either the 24-70 or the 70-200IS

I'm a "Prime-ate", (sold my zoom's to buy fast primes) so in order of preferance..

50/1.4
85/1.8
135/2.0
35/1.4

The 35mm is now my least favorite (and most expensive) lens but with the 20D is was my favorite.

Hey Ems, the 16-35L is the f/2.8 one, the 17-40L is f/4.

As I posted in the other Nikon forum by mistake, my most used lens as of now are the 28-300L IS for outdoors and 28 f/1.8 for indoors. What I wish to have are the L primes- 35L f/1.4, 85L f/1.2 and 135 f/2.

am surprised that no one favors the 24-105 F4L IS. It lacks the speed and background blur of the 24-70 2.8L but its much lighter weight, extra reach and IS compensates for its shortcomings.Would like to hear dissenting opinions.

For the price of a 24-104 F4L...

I'd rather use the same money and get a Nikon D50+18-200 VR.
- better reach
- includes a separate DSLR (even if I'm a Canon user) and has CLS capability.

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice lens. It's just that walkarounds tend to be good, not GREAT at any single task. That maybe okay for hobbyists, but a lot of users here earn income from their photo gear and getting a 'averag-ish' lens isn't going to get them the jobs that pay.

Is that why a lot of people seem to prefer the 24-70 over the 24-105?

Not really... it's just that different strokes for diffrent folks.

In as much as the photographer to a degree makes the image. The best tools also help.

Here's another of my (in)famous analogies...

If you scout around for a good mechanic to fix your car who would give you more confidence;

- The mechanic who has those all in one screwdrivers who keeps it in his pocket

or

- The mechanic who has 3 screwdrivers of differing sizes using a small toolbox.

alvin_lao

Good one...

Any mechanic who's afraid to get their tools soiled is really an armchair mechanic wannabe. I'd still look around for another mechanic who is not afraid to get his tools dirty.

For landscape... 16-35 or 14mm prime
For portraiture ... 24-70 or 85mm 1.2 prime
For wildlife... 28-300 or 500mm prime
For food... 45mm Tilt-shift prime

Do you want me to go on...

The EF 24-105 matches well with the 5D as an all-around lens and landscapes, even in low-light situations.

The EF 135 f/2.0 L & EF 24-70 f/2.8 with the 5D for portrait.

ouch! it's even higher than 30d? hmmm there must be something in this lens that's why even though it's cheap, more photographers still prefer it.

any alternatives for 24-70L 2.8?

50 f/1.8 for P4000 thats great! i hope all the lens available are less than 10k. lolz

Refer to this thread for lenses http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=183. I had a long post for all the popular EOS compatible lenses. :)

Next to the Canon 24-70L f2.8 is Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 which is only P23,000 from Henry's quiapo. Basically the Canon has superior AF and built, sharp already at f2.8, considered the best zoom available for that range.

I have been using the Tamron for 1.5 years and happy with it, but if I had the money I wouldn't hesitate purchasing the best.

Kieron Tan

Another alternative for the 24-70 2.8L lens would be the 24-105 4L IS. If you got enough cash, I suggest you get a Canon lens.

ditoy_aguila
06-24-2006, 06:42 PM
Hehe! But that will also double the 3.5-5.6 aperture, most Canon dslrs won't be able to AF already with that set-up, unless you have a 1D series body which can AF on the center point at f/8. And I am sure AF and image quality will be degraded, inferior to the Sigmonster.

i guess you can say complete na except if youre into specialized photography where other lenses can be better like if youre into birding then you obviously might need longer focal ones. or if youre into portraiture then maybe a 50mm, 85, 35 and 100 might be better due to the fact that they are fixed lenses and have less glass.

but im a noob so dont listen to me hehehehe

yes sir but you would have to do it from a long ways back. Some pro photographers do it that way they stay very far away and then just zoom into their subjects. As to why they do it that way, i read it somewhere before but cant remember. The masters can actually answer your question much better than I can.

People like ross capili and nino carandang would surely know.

chris is referring to the depth of field. obviously w/ a telephoto lens w/ large aperture, you'd have to be a li'l far away to frame your subject. sometimes it's nice to shoot that way 'cause for me it gives me a sense of photojournalism in there (stolen/candid) and it actually gives you a great bokeh. see how nicely blurred the background is when you do a portrait shot? my guideline is that when you shoot close, the depth of field is narrower, and as you shoot distant subjects, the DOF is broader. check it out on your lens now. :)

hi, John. i got confused. the 4/3 system is for the Olympus, right? the lenses you mentioned are from Canon, and they both have the APS-C sized sensors, which makes for a 1.6 magnification factor (crop).

I'm currenlty considering selling some lenses in order to get one good walk-around, everyday use kind of lens. General photography use - hobby. I don't shoot events or weddings.
Would appreciate some local feedback so I can compare with the reviews on the net.
Also, what' the going rate of these lens locally.

hi, John. i got confused. the 4/3 system is for the Olympus, right? the lenses you mentioned are from Canon, and they both have the APS-C sized sensors, which makes for a 1.6 magnification factor (crop).

Hi angelo! There are adapters available for the 4/3 system that will able you to use AF-S and AF lenses from Canon. And with the limited lenses available, no surprise that 4/3 users would use your beautiful lenses. And the 4/3 system uses a smaller sensor and with any lens, makes for a 2.0x crop factor. :D

hi sir hochi. im also looking at getting the 24-105L but the price locally is too high. im not even sure why but locally i think it sells for 67-68k thats like 1300$. The 17-55 2.8 is comparable to US prices at 54-55k very close to the US price of 1099$

i looked at sigma4less and theyre selling the 24-105L for 1079 i think. Others have it for less pa.

ooops. just checked sigma4less,damn price wentup to 1089 LOL!! thats still a far cry from $1300

Hi Dex, I'm not actually sure if there is an adapter for a Canon to 4/3 system mount... However, if there is you can find it here (http://www.novoflex.com/english/html/products.htm). :)

Got mine last month. Great all-around lens, a bit heavy (can't imagine how much heavier the 24-70 is :)). With the IS, I have been able to shoot as slow as 1/13 with decent results.

Is anyone here using the 24-105 f/4 L IS?
I'm currenlty considering selling some lenses in order to get one good walk-around, everyday use kind of lens. General photography use - hobby. I don't shoot events or weddings.
Would appreciate some local feedback so I can compare with the reviews on the net.
Also, what' the going rate of these lens locally.
Thanks!

The 24-105 is my all around favorite.
Got it when it first came out, actually had to exchange it due to the flare thing. but except for that one picture with the heavely glow i was even reluctant to even exchanged it, since it was and still is so good.

The range is perfect for me.
Price was painful but it's a one time pain.
It just does everything so well, macro, portraits, low light, product, studio, indoors, flash etc. that the other lenses just become lenses for the special cases. i have several lenses which i just have to find excuse to use, but 95% of the time, it's the 24-105L. it's just a headache free lens. Lot's of keepers.

The sharpness, color, low light focus, weight, build, handling just does it for me.
I love the way you can drag the shutter for indoor flash pics and get a good ambient light on your shots.

the 17-40f/4L....

how does the 17-4 f/4 L compare to the 16-35 f/2.8 L?

i'm looking for a good wide lens and i'm choosing between the two. the difference in price is enormous! the 16-35 costs 3x as much as the 17-40 i think.

feedback guys!

thanks!

John

dave_deluria
08-24-2006, 12:10 PM
That's because the 16-35 allows nearly 2x more light in than the 17-40's F4 maximum aperture.

The 16-35 doesn't make sense to buy unless you have a full frame since the crop factor will make it just a plain wide angle. If ultrawide is your thing, the 10-22 is the best choice/value.

But if big aperture is what you want, for the price of a single 16-35 F2.8, you can actually just buy a EFS 17-55 F2.8 IS including a body you can weld it to.

i currently have the canon 50mm 1.8 and it is my most used lens. my other lenses are the 18mm - 55mm (kit lens) and telephoto 70mm - 300mm (no is).

but i am looking into purchasing another lens, the "all perfect" lens. or a flash, hmm i don't know. any thoughts? i usually take indoor shots, portraits my kids and family members, but also need wide angle. (kinda inclined to the 24-70mm l) hmmmm

17-40 for walkaround....you guys sporting full frames?

sir sam, if youre going to take a lot of indoor shots then id suggest a flash before a lens. your 50 1.8 is great for those baby shots, maybe an 85mm might be better but the 50 is going to cut it. Im sure though that youll need a flash most of the time even if youre shooting at 2.8.

thats just my 2c of course...or where i am now 2p.

the 17-40 L is a GREAT walk-around for the price. it's so sharp and fast, love it's wideness even on a cropped sensor. it's also smaller and lightweight compared to the 24-70 L which can be quite loud when shooting street or just walk-around. it turns out to be a 27-64mm lens on a 1.6 conversion so it's just right. :)

agree with what tmo said. the only advantage of 85 over the nifty 50 is it has a nicer bokeh since it has more diaphragms and a true portraiture lens.

For walk around, that would be 70-200mm f/4L and 24-105mm f/4L IS. For underwaterphoto, that would be 100mm macro and 10-22mm.

is the Canon 28-135mm IS a good lens?

Some things often said about it...

Strength's

- IS
- focal range
- weight
- build
- walkaround favorite
- Best for Film, Full Frame, good on Cropped too
- Internal Focusing
- Takes great pics
- FTM focusing ring
- price (cheapest IS)

Weaknesses

- 28mm just ain't wide enough for cropped camera's
- double barrel extends and wobbles
- not as smooth to zoom in/out
- not an L lens
- doesn't come with hood (have to buy seperately)
- 72 mm filters are expensive (he he)

Weaknesses
- 28mm just ain't wide enough for cropped camera's
*what does this mean? can someone pls elaborate?

- not as smooth to zoom in/out
* panong not "smooth" ?

- not an L lens
*i can live with this ATM :)

- doesn't come with hood
* magkano ba (petal) hood ngayon?

- 72 mm filters are expensive (he he)
* kala ko po ba sir cheap for an IS enabled lens sya accdg to the "strengths," tapos expensive ? can someone please explain

anyway, thanks po :)

wide is when you can see more within the viewfinder and capture that. 28mm is really above what is norm for "wide" or "ultra wide" * which runs between 10mm-around 22mm to some purist

the double barrel design leads to a zoom ring that isn't smooth to move. Smooth as in L lens smooth, but it's ok pa rin naman.

The ET-73BII was around 1.6k @ Camerahaus (could be less in Hidalgo)

well, optional naman talaga mga filters, right? but if you start collecting UV's, CPLs, ND's, etc... at 72mm it's like 1.5-2.5k a pop (depending on the brand and quality) *and when I said it's the cheapest IS lens, it really is the cheapest lens Canon makes w/ IS. susunod na yung 75-300 IS USM...I think.

^ but i guess the pros significantly outweighs the cons :)

is the Canon 28-135mm IS a good lens?

Fredmiranda's average rating is 7.7 (out of 10). I have never used or owned this lens but I usually buy lens with better rating. Also, the variable max aperture (F/3.5-5.6) means you will have to adjust your exposure setting whenever you zoom in or out - and I dont exactly like that.

Here's the rating list:

Here's the reviews:

For the price of the lens, I probably add a few more bucks and get the 70-200mm F/4L but you will loose the IS (which I dont mind). If you dont need the IS, then get the L lens.

That few bucks is pretty big, like add 1/3 more....but you're right, if you can afford an L, get an L.....

In order of usage:

1. 50mm 1.8
2. 17-85mm IS USM
3. 24-70 L

I'm pretty sure the order is gonna change because I just got my 24-70 two weeks ago, and based on the shots I've taken since then, I don't think I'll be switching over to the 17-85 of the 50 1.8 anytime soon.

kit lens (I think I totally maxed out its use by now XD), Sigma 24-70 2.8 (Can't afford the Canon L version, sob). I have the 50 mm 1.8, but after I got the Sigma, I haven't used it again. Haha.
