View Full Version : Dropped my 105 VR on the pavement!
zandy_marantal 10-24-2006, 01:56 AM Actually, my 3 year old son did, but it was my fault nonetheless :)
Going back from a 9 hour drive from Niagara Falls, I guess I was too tired to think at that time. We had so many things that we needed to unload from the car that I started giving everybody something to carry upstairs. I gave my daughter the Lowepro lens case containing the 70-200VR and my son the smaller one containing the 105VR. I guess he was tired too as it immediatley slipped out of his hands (from about 2 feet) and bounced off the concrete.
I immediately inspected it once we got home. Though there were no external signs of damage, the lens wouldn't auto-focus anymore(manual focus seems to work). The VR seems to have been shot as well. Peeking inside, the aperture blades seems to have fallen off as I can see the black thingies when I shake the lens. (It also makes a faint noise)
Anyway, I just sent it off to Nikon today so let me see what they have to say. Not sure if they're going to cover it under warranty but even if not, thank God it's still within 90 days of my purchase so Amex would re-imburse me for the repair or the replacement of the lens.
I guess the moral of the story is, never entrust your gear to a 3 year old :)
regards.
fidel_mercado 10-24-2006, 02:07 AM Ouch. :( That's one fine lens... Hmm, so the case did not help?
zandy_marantal 10-24-2006, 02:27 AM No, the case didn't help but it was a pretty steep drop. I think it must have bounced 6 inches from the ground so I doubt any other case would have fared better.
Sundee Guevara 10-24-2006, 02:47 AM Ouch?
At least you didn't lose an 80-200 lens in the canals of Venice!
I did in one of those gondola rides while changing lenses. The scene was so beautiful I had to change to a wide angle lens. But instead of tucking the zoom lens in between my legs, I put it beside me.
As luck would have it, a wave caused by a passing boat tipped the gondola and my zoom lens fell into the murky depths of the waters of Venice.
Buti na lang it was a Tokina, and not a Nikon. Not to feel bad, I bought a Nikon instead.
zandy_marantal 10-24-2006, 03:30 AM Oh man. That sucks. Were you still able to take pictures afterwards? I would be sick to my stomach if it were my lens.
The only reason I'm feeling good right now is the accidental damage protection from Amex. They did good and replaced my damaged Treo a couple of years ago.

Tok Paler 10-24-2006, 04:08 AM zandy,
you would have been charged of negligence if it were a crime! =b Lol! =D
good luck! =)

He-he. I'm sure I would be Tok. I'm sure I would...
Thanks!
ricardo_li 10-24-2006, 05:11 AM ouch... thats pretty ouch
Nick_Espino 10-24-2006, 06:36 AM Zandy & Sundee- I feel for both of guys. Kind of sucks just hearing about it. Glad I don't have such misfortune. Knock on wood.
Earl Gonzalez 10-24-2006, 07:04 AM Anyway, I just sent it off to Nikon today so let me see what they have to say. Bro., you're still lucky that you're abroad. Imagine that fiasco happening here in the Philippines... Can't imagine any re-imbursement of somesort.
Yes, be cautious if your 3 y/o boy... At this stage, they have this personal enjoyment of messing with things around them. :D
bernard billedo 10-24-2006, 07:19 AM I know the feeling. Accidents do happen and it's not your fault or the kid's.
I've dropped my Canon 70-200 f4 twice. The first time was it slipped out of the bag and the second time was while being chased by seals on a rocky shore in Fiordland - 60kms from the nearest road. I was really lucky both times as the UV filter absorbed most of the impact.
I hope it's still under warranty.
zandy_marantal 10-24-2006, 08:12 AM Thanks Earl, Nick, Bernard,
I know better now...
Raffy Crucillo 10-24-2006, 08:44 AM thank God it's still within 90 days of my purchase so Amex would re-imburse me for the repair or the replacement of the lens.
Zandy,
Is this kind of arrangement limited to Amex?
zandy_marantal 10-24-2006, 09:31 AM Hi Raffy,
The Purchase Protection Plan is exclusive only to Amex AFAIK. The Buyer's Assurance Plan though, which extends your manufacturer warranty one additional year, is common to other cards as well such as Mastercard and Visa.
regards.
Marton_Benitez 10-24-2006, 10:12 AM Ouch! :(
Atleast its not the 200f2! :) Just kidding, but its good you have the protection plan. Don't feel so bad about it your son might see/feel it and feel worse himself. :)
Sonny Thakur 10-24-2006, 10:12 AM Zandy! This story made my heart stop for a second!

Thanks for the info, Zandy. :)

...Just sharing
Carlo R. Lopez 10-24-2006, 06:34 PM Zandy,
sorry about your loss. accidents do happen so when it comes to handling my lenses i never entrust it to anyone. so far so good. im extremely careful.
i had a close call this morning though, my 85mm andf 28mm came crashing to the floor from about waist high. thank god my kata protection case absorbed all of the impact. your also lucky aboout amex protection assurance. as earl mentioned, if that happened here goodbye lens:)

Good thing nothing happened to the 85 and 28 :)
Brent_Co 10-24-2006, 07:43 PM Ouch! Good thing there's the Amex protection. If not, it'll amount to expensive repairs.
Coz I remember that they mentioned Anton Sheker spent 25t to have his 28-70 f/2.8 repaired when his tripod dropped killing his lens' zooming capability.
Earl Gonzalez 10-24-2006, 09:08 PM Come to think of it... Being repaired or recalibrated or reconditioned... It still will never be the same. Ouch parin... :(

true true, hope he can get it replaced nalang for peace of mind

My sentiments exactly Bro. :)
Carlo R. Lopez 10-25-2006, 09:46 AM Good thing nothing happened to the 85 and 28 :)
yeah thank god if it did get damage i would be soo pissed of at myself. as they fell i could see em in slow motion but was helpless to do anything about it.
ian_santos 10-25-2006, 09:56 AM hehehe....i know how you feel Carlo...I once dropped my IR remote while taking pictures of a stairwell looking down on the 35th floor. It slipped out my chest pocket. I literally screamed in dismay. Funny thing is when I tried to look for it, I couldnt find it anymore.
Micob Tacastacas 10-27-2006, 12:46 PM Ouch! This is terrible Zandy. I also have a 3-yr. old so I can relate to that. I remember my kid dabbed at my lens with his fingers while I was trying to focus a shot on him (kinda like how Blue's Clues puts his paw marks on the tv screen, you get my drift?) and I yelled in fright! Immediately that afternoon, I made a dash to Infomax to get me one of those UV filters (lens protector). Friends tell me filters reduce the quality of the picture. Yeah right! I'd rather have reduced picture quality than have my lens reduced to just being a trash can material !
So now, let's watch out when Zandy makes a "For Sale: Nikon 105VR lens" post somewhere. Just kidding Zandy.
zandy_marantal 10-28-2006, 05:40 AM Thanks for your concern guys.
Just an update, I guess Amex won't won't be re-imbursing me because Nikon is covering all the repairs under warranty.
I know it would be better if I can just get it replaced(maybe I should have dropped it some more for good measure :)), but considering that it has a 5-year warranty, I'm not worrying that much. I'll test the hell out of it when it gets back and also will try to compare it with another copy. I won't hesitate to send it back if I find any issues. Nikon service has been very good to me so far.
regards.

At least Bro., you know their doing something about it, and quick... I hope the Nikon thing here catches up to pace, similar to what you have there. :)

Hi! Glad to hear that Nikon was willing to fix it for free...how is the lens performing so far? Am thinking of getting one. However I read a review that said that there was a problem with focusing? That it hunts. Though I think the one who wrote review mentioned that it could be because it was a pre-prod model...i think it was tested in photokina...
Would appreciate your comments/recommendation on the lens pre "accident" stage...
thanks!
zandy_marantal 11-14-2006, 04:35 PM Hi John,
The lens has been back and it's as good as new. They replaced the Silent Wave motor and I believe the VR module as well. Focus is till dead on. Here's a backfocus test shot taken wide open.
http://zandy.smugmug.com/photos/110334667-L.jpg
The lens does tend to hunt for focus but I believe that's a common trait among macros as my 60mm macro does the same. It can be mitigated by setting the focus limiter switch.
Here's a shot of a lens I sold recently since the 105mm VR(which I used for this) is so much better. :)

Hope this helps,
ricky_ladia 11-14-2006, 04:44 PM :(If dropping the lens would be that bad, imagine dropping my D70 in one my shoots in for Ayala Land, the pay didn't even cover the cost of the repair, the camera has never been the same again so i seldom use it now. And its not even covered by a warranty even if i bought it from columbia megamall. A big OUUUUUCCCHHH!!!!
Mike Punzalan 11-14-2006, 05:09 PM good thing my lens is safely connected to my camera.. nyahaha!
the hassle of owning and using DSLRs

Imagine if I had a point and shoot, I drop the lens, the body comes with it. Good thing with SLR's is when only 1 lens is dropped, I still have the body, flash and other lenses to use :D

Thanks for the feedback!!! Am getting more and more convinced...! :D
The lens you sold was also a 105mm?

I don't think warranty cover damage caused by the user/owner...but I guess it would be good customer relation if they do take in and repair it with no or minimal expense to the buyer(like what happened with Zandy's 105VR)...maybe the new columbia digital will be like their US or other counterparts? ;)
best,
john

The lens in the picture is a 105mm DC. :)

wow talk about confidence in your warranty. your lucky, that would be unthinkable here.
the 105dc is a nice lens:) i had one of these but decided to sell it in favor of the 85 1.4d/ both these lenses are the most highly acclaimed gems for portrature. for me though the 85 produced better images wide open:) just my 2 cents
zandy_marantal 11-14-2006, 06:07 PM Rosalie is right.
Just to clarify, I used the 105 VR to take a pic of the 105 DC. (you were asking for a sample shot right?)

Right Carlo. The 85 f/1.4D is a gem but the 105 DC doesn't have that much use now in the digital world as the effect can easily replicated in PP. I would have kept it if it was sharp wide open but it was not.

precisely why i sold it. the dc feature has been rendered obsolete by powerful PP programs like cs2. nothing gaussian blur filter can handle:) Honestly though the 105 dc with the defocus maxxed out still doesnt produce appealing bokeh compared to 85 1.4d. BUT since when did anything compare to the 85 diba zands?
