View Full Version : Mini Class on Business of Photography
Harvey_Chua 10-22-2008, 10:30 AM I am trying to provide training in the business of photography to our two new Adphoto account executives, and I can accommodate two non-Adphoto photographers (or AEs of other photographers). We hold one-hour "classes" every Tuesday and Thursday from 8am to 9am. I know, it's quite early. :)
If you are interested to join (it's free), just give me a call. You don't need to commit to the whole thing - we might go on for several weeks - you can just "hop in, hop out." I just thought this could be my sharing for people in the profession. Your presence might also lead to a more exciting discussion.
Our current topic is "pricing photography."

Harvey_Chua 10-22-2008, 11:02 PM Oh gee, I did not think there would be more than one or two among you who would be interested in my informal "class." :)
Let me prepare for a "test class" for after the holiday (All Saints' Day). Maybe I can meet with those who have signified their interest in this "class" on Saturday morning, November 8. It can be a two-hour class. It does not have to be 8am anymore. 9am?
What topics would you like me to prepare for?

Dear Raymond,
The applications and practical experiences may be different but I am sure the principles would be the same. Which is why I am opening this mini class to others - I would love to hear how others approach the challenges that we face, and how they conduct their businesses.:)

Marlo Moya 10-24-2008, 05:41 PM I think live webcast can work on ichat, or using yahoo messenger's video chat over isight, its just that a moderator for the main conferencing camera may be needed to keep the broadcast open and stable, as i am sure, bandwidth issues could have time lag on all open webcasts. I hope it could work. But on the other hand, this is tedious work for Madame Harvey which is already too much to ask.

Sorry but I'm technologically-challenged.:D If I were not, I would love to do this as a webcast, for the benefit of those who cannot come, although it would still be great to meet the group.
Maybe between the first and the second "test" class, I can learn how, plus check our internet connection. Would anyone like to volunteer to see how we can do the webcast from our studio?

Try going to www.adphoto.com.ph/business where I have posted a few articles on the business of photography. I'm ashamed to admit that nothing has been added since a few months ago. Your response will definitely inspire me to write again. Thanks.:)

Harvey_Chua 10-28-2008, 12:04 PM Hi all,
Can we close the list at 11? I would like to prepare some handouts (and merienda). The topic will be on negotiating, and we will discuss the "10 lies" (see the other thread) and what to do when you are told these "lies."
See you on November 8 at 9am. You may come earlier (8am) if you want to mingle and chat before the start of "class."
JarodClemente 10-28-2008, 04:44 PM Hi Ma'am Harvey,
I see that the class is already full but I would just like to take a shot if I could still join. I was one of the first respondents prior to the list but was preoccupied to check again DPP and list my name. I was also the one who sent you PMs before but if all else fails, I'll just join the next batch with Cez.
Thanks!

Harvey_Chua 11-06-2008, 08:35 AM Hi to all,
So it's not confusing, let's do another listing for the next class not now, but when we have a date set for it.
I probably would not have time anymore for a second class until after the end of year, and January is devoted to meeting my staff for one-on-one meetings, so I am looking at February.
For those who signed up, just this simple reminder - the mini class on the business of photography is on Saturday, November 8 at 9am, up to 11am. If you wish to just mingle with me and the others, you may come at 8am - I will be ready by then to meet you.
It will be at Adphoto, 3688 Bautista Street, Palanan, Makati City. Landline 8316117, 7571501. My cellphone is 09209207199.
adrianportugal 11-06-2008, 09:56 AM Thanks Mam Harvey... See you on Saturday... :-) P.S. I got erased from the list again.. Supposed to be #9

Hi Rafi,
It's too bad that you could not come. We had a lot of fun, and I also learned a lot from the group. It was a very interesting discussion - we even had role playing!
If plans push through, it looks like my next talk on the business of photography will be in Davao. :)
chuckoreta 11-08-2008, 12:43 PM I just came from the class. :) A very interesting a different side of photography. Recommended to ALL photographers.
Thank you, Maam. Very nice indeed.

adrianportugal 11-08-2008, 07:50 PM Thanks again for the seminar Ma'am Harvey, I learned a lot.... :)
Harvey_Chua 11-08-2008, 09:29 PM As promised, here are my notes.

However, in addition to these notes, a lot of points and stories were shared during the role playing (thanks to Melvin, Jun and Sean) and the discussion and I don't have notes on them. Maybe the guys who attended can share what they learned from this morning's "class."
I also found interesting everyone's story on their worst and best negotiating experiences.:)
Christian Obmerga 11-10-2008, 10:56 AM Firs, let me express my utmost gratefulness to ma'am Harvey for sharing her invaluable wisdom to us, neophytes of the business of photography. The class was indeed one of the most productive discussions that I've been in to lately.
I'll go over my notes later and share what have I learned. I'll probably create a new thread as discussed during the class. It's just that my hands are full as of the moment.
Again, thanks po ma'am Harvey. And to the guys who were there, it was nice meeting you all.
P.s. Jun, pasa mo sa kin pag di bumigay sa asking price mo. Bigyan kita commission nyahahahahahah!
Erwin B. Mallari 11-10-2008, 12:06 PM thank you very much Ma'am Harvey for sharing your experience to us, for the tips how to deal with clients specifically, psychology etc. the next time I deal with Clients, now I know the questions that you'll going to ask (material & time of using photos, enumerates the values, extra work, time to submit, how long will use the photo etc.) with that particular questions, you can prepare what to prepare, & idea of the clients budget also would like to add: avoid day rates & long term %
Erwin B. Mallari 11-10-2008, 12:11 PM I got from this class is not only the facts that I've learned but as well as my inspiration to AdPhoto & the motivation to have my own business of photography
Rolly Magpayo 11-10-2008, 12:44 PM Maam Harvey,
I am so sorry I was not able to attend the saturday's class because I was injured in a minor accident. I was sideswiped by a jeepney and my right arm was sandwiched between the jeepney's side and the taxi's door. I wasnt able to inform you through PM or the thread because I went to the hospital to have my arm checked. I got minor injuries, no broken bones, but my arm muscles are still blue and bandaged because of the open wound. I hope I can join your next class. I wanted to send you a photo of my arm but I think its too gross. btw, my camera's safe
Marlo Moya 11-10-2008, 03:59 PM Geeez Rolly! that was mind-numbingly crazy!!!, show us your photos. Make a new thread. CSI-Manila. It'll be a hit!
Rolly Magpayo 11-10-2008, 04:42 PM Geeez Rolly! that was mind-numbingly crazy!!!, show us your photos. Make a new thread. CSI-Manila. It'll be a hit!
I showed my arm to fellow photographers Al Gonzales, Laurent Lecaroz and Armand Apuntar last saturday. I'm sure you won't like it. Anyway, I think it's getting better now since some parts turned from violet to dark red. hahaha. Funny thing was, due to the intense pain, I wasn't able to confront the jeepney driver. All I wanted was to sit down. I went in the cab and sat down. The jeepney drove-off and I didn't bother to pursue. But if Maam Harvey requires me to submit a photo I definitely will. :BlackEye:
Josephine Roque 11-10-2008, 05:02 PM Thanks Ms Harvey Chua for the notes link :). It is really informative. I wanted to join sana but Saturday is a household day for me. Already bookmarked the link. :D

oh thanks so much for the notes maam! :)
update: just finished reading your notes (blog) and it was indeed educational especially coming from a seasoned entrenpreneur from the business photography! thanks much Maam Harvey!
Harvey_Chua 11-10-2008, 10:42 PM Maam Harvey,
I am so sorry I was not able to attend the saturday's class because I was injured in a minor accident. I was sideswiped by a jeepney and my right arm was sandwiched between the jeepney's side and the taxi's door. I wasnt able to inform you through PM or the thread because I went to the hospital to have my arm checked. I wanted to send you a photo of my arm but I think its too gross. btw, my camera's safe
I am so sorry to hear about your accident. Hey, you don't need to send me any pictures of your arm - I believe you - and I can imagine how painful it must have been. Take care. I hope you didn't have your accident because you were rushing to come to our class. BTW, my husband and my daughter would say the same thing about their cameras. What is it about photographers that make them care more about their cameras than themselves? Listen to Suze Orman (CNBC on Saturday and Sunday 10-11pm - she would say "people first, then money, then things." Ingat lagi.:)
MelvinSevilla 11-10-2008, 11:09 PM @mam harvey.
Thanks for the very interesting and energetic session!
I have to say: I have learned more business wisdom (and how to say the right things) in 2-3hours than more than 5years working. And this business wisdom I learn is not only applicable to the advertising/photography business, but in any industry.
Thanks again. I hope there is a follow-up session. :)
JarodClemente 11-11-2008, 03:39 AM Thanks ma'am Harvey for the great opportunity. The things we've learned in that short span of time are definitely priceless and such wisdom could only be attained after years and countless negotiations if let alone in the normal world.
Also, I salute you with sir John as well for your "advocacy" and "pay-it-forward" attitude. You both are truly inspiring people who think out-of-the-box while being particulars to others who are in need in one way or the other. God bless you!
Harvey_Chua 11-11-2008, 08:58 AM To everyone who came last Saturday:
Perhaps you can share what you learned from your fellow photographers and me, so you can also "pay it forward."
Christian Obmerga 11-13-2008, 09:12 AM Hi guys I created a new thread (http://digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=18914) for us to share what we have learned from last saturday, and from actual experiences. Feel free to air your thoughts :D
