Moderators Aly Reyes and Derick Gamboa are the coordinators of this EB. Other team leaders include:
1. Mitz Picardal - city panoramas
2. Joel H. Garcia - street photography and portraiture
3. Jerry Tieng - Binondo and Quiapo
4. Jay Jallorina - nightscapes and urban landscapes
5. Otep Benavides - the metro nightlife
6. Larry Piojo - photojournalism
7. Randy Tamayo - UP/QC and food
Coordinators and Team leaders, start posting what you will be shooting, where and when. If you want to shoot another location, let us know immediately by posting here.

joelhgarcia 10-17-2008, 11:48 AM Hi Nino- Can we request an EB I.D. for this Assignment? An identification of our purpose, can be a big help when things went wrong...you know, Some areas especially in the metro Security is very strict, even police are questioning some prompt DSLR shootings... this is just a plan B: so the shooters have other options incase we encounter that legendary question of "PARA SAAN BA YAN? "
Please advise.

Im thinking Marikina City would be a nice spot to shoot, The Shoe Capital of the Philippines...., The marikina Street scenes are somewhat nice to see in those Pink Bayani colors. They have some River Banks area too...
Quezon City Circle is nice to place to shoot for City street scenes, Plus the Legendary Cubao area.
Of course as per request my Nino C. Intramuros with Manila City Hall Backdrop, then we could drop at Baywalk for the Sunset - i know this place is kinda passe but the beauty of The Manila Bay sunset is still a classic,i know suggestions will coming out in a few days to come.:)

Hi Joanne,
I'm still deciding on dates Oct. 25, Nov. 2, and Nov. 8. Also, since there's a plan to shoot Makati or Ortigas areas, we needed the corporate people to be present during the shoot, and that would mean it has to be on a weekday. So, most probably there would be a weekday shoot if that would be okay with bossing nino.

Nick Tuason 10-17-2008, 01:28 PM READ THIS:
If the teams get too large I suggest we schedule two or three different dates to shoot. Either that or we create a cap for participants. Moderators and Team Leaders I will leave it up to you to decide.
Here is the other thing, this assignment is not a way for you to get a one-on-one lesson from the leader. You can watch, observe, and go along but please do not pull the leaders aside and ask them to help with your compositon or exposure. We need photos for DPP and these leaders will be busy taking pictures.
All of these EBs have to be executed before October 27. I will need to ask your favorite photos no later than October 31. Sorry for the tight schedule but we're notorious for delaying DPP magazine because it takes forever for our readers to submit their photographs after we give a deadline. Moving forward, once we place a deadline we will not make any exceptions for extensions or delays.
Go DPP and let's Shoot the City!

joelhgarcia 10-17-2008, 02:11 PM Guys im thinking Since we have a tight schedule those who are in the lists...maybe this coming week days..you could bring your camera to your work or maybe to your places and if you have a chance to shoot your city territory that would be good, so at least we could have a pool of photos to choose from... also your weekday shoot can be act as a practice so come October 25 or 26 we are ready for the street shoot out for DPP.
Just a suggestion.

street photography kasi is more random, candid-oriented portraits of people going about their daily lives in the city.
photojournalism will focus more on stories and issues...of course with urban life as a central theme.

joelhgarcia 10-17-2008, 02:59 PM Sir Joel,
Do you have any guidelines we can follow for our practice shoot? :) I don't know what to shoot here in Ayala aside from high rise building and traffic:)
Rick- Joel na lang. :)
Street Photography is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as street, parks, malls, conventions and other settings.
Example in Ayala:
Street Scenes- How people fall in line while waiting for the bus to arrive, movements specially the rush hour, people are running just to go to their office or going home, you could do some slow shutter photos to give some emphasis of movements, buses and jeepneys caught by MMDA, vendors along the Ayala sidewalks, Fountains and some flashing lights, Landmark to Greenbelt footwalk bridge, sillohuettes, Interesting signs, Character people along the streets, while doing these subjects play along with Shadows and Light, colors and hues, you could do a series of photos to create a story line...
Maybe your riding a jeepney you could shoot from the inside or bus. BUt most of all be vigilant with your surroundings, DSLR nowadays are redhot items in the eyes of SG and some police, specially when your shooting a private areas and some guarded facilities.
As much as possible if you have a backpack set it up into your front and ready your camera putting it in AV mode make it much easier to shoot set your aperture into f2.8 or f/4 would be an advantage specially in shooting in low light, set your ISO according to lighting condition.
If possible make yourself invisible:D
INVISIBILITY
It is said that Henri Cartier-Bresson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Cartier-Bresson) would wrap a large handkerchief around his camera and pretend to be blowing his nose while he took the picture, or would wrap the camera's body in black tape. There are many variations to the stealthiness theme, some involving the use of waist-level finders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waist-level_finder) in cameras, but the general idea is to keep the subject(s) from being aware that he or she is being photographed. Another aspect of invisibility involves "blending in" with the crowd. Dressing like an archetypal foreign correspondent, wearing a Trilby (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilby) hat, photographer's vest and over-the-shoulder camera bag generally will guarantee that everyone is aware of you. Observe the ways of the crowd and try to dress and behave in an inconspicuous manner, according to the circumstances.

joelhgarcia 10-17-2008, 03:35 PM Thanks for the inputs Joel. More or less, I already have an ideas on what to shoot. So that's what you call it.. street photography. Will try that later after office.:)
Rick- theres a lot of styles in street shootings eh, like DPP Raul Echivarre, he said to me, Dont think just shoot....then think later...:) Also he is more on a waiting side. He sit in a corner or a bench and wait till the frame evolve into something and click it.
For me, im more on extra observant type, before i click my shutter i have some visuals in my head, i anticipate things to happen, when i could feel it coming, i ready my eyes into my viewfinder and wait all my elements to fit into places then press the shutter. for me i would like my street photography to have a sense of purpose, a story to tell, to let my viewer to stop for awhile look at the photo and think.:) In not an expert on this, many DPP forumers are much better than me in this field, maybe they could share some of their experiences on SP. Im just sharing some of my inputs for this thread.:)
jay jallorina 10-17-2008, 03:36 PM Actualy Jay- Street Photography and Photojourn can be consider as one eh....For me, i shoot street photography, but as much as i can, i want to inject some PURPOSE, stories why i took a particular street frame.
of course all photos have stories. and that's why, indeed, they can be considered as one...street and photojournalism :)
street photography is a subset of photojournalism. but whereas street shooting relies on a candid approach (where you may or may not engage in a relationship with your subject), true photojournalism entails direct involvement and concern for the issue one is documenting. that's why the admin split the two, one team for street shooting and another team to tackle a relevant issue/story in the city. both genres call for different approaches kasi.
shooting a war is photojournalism - but even if this was a house-to-house CQB in the streets of mogadishu, you can't classify it as street photography.
______
Street photography is a type of documentary photography that usually features people in candid situations in public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions, and other settings.
Photography intended to describe or document in pictures the events of individuals, groups of people, governments, history, and so on. Photojournalism gives us newsworthy photographs wherein the primary motivation is to recount a story not assist a story, the photographer never disturbing the natural events in the scene.

BTW, for PHOTOJOURNALISM EB. We only have the 25th and 26th of October dates as based from Sir Nick's announcment few pages back to meet the 31st deadline. Let's decide on the final dates asap.

hey. That's exactly the point! Road Rage would be a nice subject in your photos. I am hoping to get a shot of those drivers shouting swear words at each other, or a jeepney already in the middle of the opposite lane.

Illl join Jay's group for urban landscapes and nightshots.
Jay, saw an article on infrared mono on urban landscapes, shooting desolated buildings, alleys. You got me excited with this idea. For nightscapes, I can arrange a shoot in some of the buildings in filinvest, shaw and makati.
The second group, it was a hard choice between photojournalism and street portraiture/ photography. But i think i wanna go back shooting portraiture. I hope I can join team JoelG. Btw, joel, I can have access in binondo area, old chinese houses, delpan bridge, etc. (*edit, ooops i think this is Jerry tiengs area of shoot.)
Hope the dates of the shoot will be a free in my schedule.

joyperez_melendres 10-17-2008, 04:29 PM Actualy Jay- Street Photography and Photojourn can be consider as one eh....For me, i shoot street photography, but as much as i can, i want to inject some PURPOSE, stories why i took a particular street frame.
Also if our Team Street Photography can find/capture a really good Photojourn images we cannot just let it go.... of course we will shoot and document it.:)
I don't think they can be considered as "one", Sir Joel. Street photography, documentary photography, and photojournalism are not one and the same.
Let me just share some insightful info from Mark Hancock:

And this one: http://photo.net/street-documentary-photography-forum/008kMN

Winston Baltasar 10-17-2008, 04:31 PM Want to try it in our "Citi"?:)
Rick, I forgot you're with the Citi Camera Club. How's about we raid your office at PBCOM with cameras ablazing! Now that's a shoot! :D

Hi Joy- thanks...bottom line, if we encounter a documentary or photojournalism images during our Street photography we will shoot it anyways if we find it good and appealing to the goal of DPP EB shoot out.:)
paolo melendres 10-17-2008, 04:39 PM hmmm ... if each team would be doing a little bit of everything (like team SP shooting PJ and NS shooting portraits), wouldn't it be easier to just assign areas to the groups to shoot in?
joel has a point: if i were assigned to team PJ and i see a good opportunity to take an environmental portrait, i would probably take the shot but that photo would not be in sync with the theme of my group.
just an idea
