Gil Tuzon 10-21-2006, 08:13 AM In my office monitor, focus issue is noticeable on the first one. The 2nd one is ok but too small for viewing - rather than include the top portion, you may want to frame your shot so that you can only the full flower and one bud on the right. Flowers are my next big thing after the birds. See samples below taken from the prosumer Panasonic FZ4 (4 MP) with front end macro lens. See the angles and the light play. With your gear, very much attainable. You just need more experimentations. Pics below all taken from my backyard with natural light. Images in jpg and post processing was mostly level adjust after cropping. cheers, gil http://art4less.smugmug.com/photos/76795742-M.jpg http://art4less.smugmug.com/photos/76795684-M.jpg http://art4less.smugmug.com/photos/76795423-M.jpg http://art4less.smugmug.com/photos/76794766-M.jpg floyd_palma 10-22-2006, 12:25 AM thanks gil, i'll take note of that. great tips for a newbie like me. i like your 2nd pic. the light shining from the left hand side towards the yellow thingy creates a very good expression and mood. pretty cool, huh! i'll post the rest of the Flowers & Bloooms later. i'll appreciate more if you could tell me what see did you that i didn't notice at all. all the best. cheers 2006-10-22/003 http://static.flickr.com/113/283596401_f90c9768a2_o.jpg floyd_palma 10-22-2006, 12:30 AM after your runway which i can call flower runway he he he... and here's another version, a real blooming one. this is nice... very nice. thanks teejay, how's your shooting with raul and the georgeous indonesian babe? i really hope i could join you guys next time. IMHO, it would have been better if whole reflection of the flower is also captured in the photograph. i think Mr. Gil will agree with that. where did you shoot this? http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p108/rmarcelo/Flowers/CopyofIMG_3009.jpg This photo is Raul Marcelo's. floyd_palma 10-23-2006, 10:28 PM 2006-10-23/004 White in Black http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/drakko94510/Orchids098copy.jpg Jonathan Dael 10-24-2006, 09:05 AM http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f44/jdael2005/bw%20lomo%20sepia/IMG_0445copy.jpg floyd_palma 10-24-2006, 09:22 AM great shots, jonathan. keep posting. floyd_palma 10-24-2006, 09:29 AM 2006-10-24/005 http://static.flickr.com/84/236126134_44d04e1e59_b.jpg Teejay Joson 10-24-2006, 02:41 PM thanks teejay, how's your shooting with raul and the georgeous indonesian babe? i really hope i could join you guys next time. ey floyd, i didn't find time to go at the shooting area with raul. quite bz with my wife shopping hehe i called u once in your opis but no luck. call u later man. u have a nice flowers collection. i'll share mine next time. Raul Marcelo 10-24-2006, 03:25 PM floyd: thanks. i have another shot that shows the full reflection. i'll try to post it here later. this was taken last sunday in los banos, laguna. i joined a bird watchers group to UP los banos and one of the members was kind enough to host us for lunch at her house with a fantastic garden and magnificent view of mt. makiling. Gil Tuzon 10-25-2006, 03:54 AM (sorry, I was busy the past few days and thus these late input). 1. Look is the traditional frontal look. Ok for a while but as you gain more experience, the top/frontal look will become boring. 2. Background could be improved. See the dark areas in your background. It is distracting and takes away some of the attention from the subject. If your subject is movable. move your subject. 3. Front of orchid need some light and if natural light can't be obtained, a fill-in flash could be done. See differences between no and with fill-in flash below (used Panasomic FZ20 and built-in flash only). http://art4less.smugmug.com/photos/22195678-M.jpg with uncontrolled (no diffuser/unreduced strebgth) fill-in flash http://art4less.smugmug.com/photos/22195674-M.jpg cheers, gil thanks gil, i'll take note of that. great tips for a newbie like me. i like your 2nd pic. the light shining from the left hand side towards the yellow thingy creates a very good expression and mood. pretty cool, huh! i'll post the rest of the Flowers & Bloooms later. i'll appreciate more if you could tell me what see did you that i didn't notice at all. all the best. cheers 2006-10-22/003 http://static.flickr.com/98/246452360_99c2963b22_b.jpg Gil Tuzon 10-25-2006, 05:47 AM The look was pretty good and especially if you rae reaching out to the pond, you don't have many choices of angles. That is one very pretty subject. I have taken some shots of it at the San Franscisco Conservatory of Flowers about two years ago with my Panasonic FZ10 (bago pa lang noon ako sa long zoom). Sample pics below mosyly taken at low/medium zoom dahil malayo sa edge ng pond and all shots during those moments at this link http://www.art4less.smugmug.com/gallery/92720 Sa image mo Raul, medyo may softness sa gitna. Maybe a slight focusing issue or sinadya mo para sa effect. Halos andiyan ka na. Practice lang. Dahil bago pa ako sa FZ10 noon, panay program metering mode lang ako. later on, I mostly use spot metering for better light control. http://art4less.smugmug.com/photos/3249038-M.jpg http://art4less.smugmug.com/photos/3249044-M.jpg http://art4less.smugmug.com/photos/3249050-M.jpg enjoy, gil hi mr. gil. i'm a newbie as well and am interested in birds and flowers, at the moment. am posting one for your comment/s. thanks. http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p108/rmarcelo/Flowers/CopyofIMG_3009.jpg Gil Tuzon 10-25-2006, 05:57 AM Medyo may softness pa rin and the color white is easy to over expose and get CA on the edges. YOu may want to try spot metering and meter on the brightest area. This will underexpose the rest of the area but will minimize the overexposure and CA. You can also do matrix metering but under expose. I don't like matrix (or pattern metering) when there are lots of white as it will make an average most of the time and the tendency http://art4less.smugmug.com/gallery/448502/2/18066081 This link has the pics of spot metering tutorial I did some time ago on the effect of spot metering. Sorry, the texts were mostly in the old postings I did. The arrows pointed to the area where I spot metered. I used the Panasonic FZ20 here where the EVF (electronic viewfinder) gives you the actual meter reading as opposed to the OVF of the DSLR. http://art4less.smugmug.com/gallery/448502/1/18066071 The daffodils in this link only shows the basic effect of different angles. Sorry, again the texts were in the old postings in dpreview. cheers and happy shooting, gil http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f44/jdael2005/bw%20lomo%20sepia/IMG_0445copy.jpg Raul Marcelo 10-25-2006, 10:54 AM hi floyd. here's the other shot of the lotus. i'm finding it hard to post the picture here, so i'm attaching the URL instead. http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p108/rmarcelo/Flowers/Copy2ofIMG_3016.jpg Mon Corpuz 10-25-2006, 11:32 AM My share, hand-held shot on a 10D + Sigma 70-300 DG Macro. Gil Tuzon 10-26-2006, 08:00 AM gil, does the sunlight have anything to do with it aside from the very wide opening that i used (f/2.8 because i read somewhere this would give nice background blur)? i took those pictures noontime, with the sun overhead. your lotus photos are crisp and sharp. perhaps i should use a smaller opening (around f/8-11) since i will have the speed because of the available light? btw, i like taking bird pictures as well, but have very limited success in it. Yes, shooting wide is a recipe for good bokeh (creamy blur) but depending on the lens you use. Remember that sharpness is also a function on shooting small aperture opening. If you use a good prime (I use a good 100mm f2.8 1:1 macro on my KM 5D/A100) and even using 2X TC (which would give me f5.6 effective), I still get good bokeh. See this link for http://art4less.smugmug.com/gallery/1256577 for sample shots using a f2.8 dedicated macro lens with 2X TC. As for the sun, noon time is tough as the rays are directly above but for that lotus flower, should result in exciting shots. MY posted pics were done with the prosumer with small sensor and thus greater DOF (thus the visible background). The link I indicated here have pics done by the DSLR. You don't ahve to go to f8-11 to get crisp center area. f2.8 to f5.6 should be ok if you will use spot/center area focus and spot metering. As for birding, you have local experts like Romy Ocon who is posting here. You could learn a lot from him and a very nice/accommodating person. cheers, gil floyd_palma 10-26-2006, 10:52 PM (sorry, I was busy the past few days and thus these late input). 1. The latest additions to your thread are just getting better and better. One more tip, if you can't move your flowers to have a nice (blurred) background, try painting a piece of board and place it behind your subject (It's like a mini-canvas :)). (I prefer a darker colored background.) Although your flower looks sharp, some could even be outstanding shots if you have just picked a nicer background. Also try using a reflector if you're shooting at noon. To eliminate those harsh shadows and improve on the color saturation of your flowers. I believe that it is common practice for orchid culturists to tag their collection for added appreciation and value. Thank you for sharing such beautiful images. Cheers! benrose victor_vesuna 07-09-2010, 06:55 AM try the backlight technique it works well for orchids, you may use a few drops of glycerine by using a medicine droper you can also focus on the lower petals instead of the whole flower for artistic results benrose 07-09-2010, 07:30 AM try the backlight technique it works well for orchids, you may use a few drops of glycerine by using a medicine droper you can also focus on the lower petals instead of the whole flower for artistic results 07-08-2010 @Dr. Victor Vesuna This is my lucky day.
