View Full Version : Zenphoto
Bobby Timonera 09-25-2008, 07:43 PM Hi,
Not sure if this belongs here, but I can't find no other place to talk about Zenphoto (http://www.zenphoto.org), a photo gallery software.
I'm playing with it these past few weeks, despite my zero knowledge about cms, php & css (only used wysiwyg html editors before). But I'm struggling, and making little progress as I overhauled and updated my TheLandOfPromise (http://www.thelandofpromise.com) website. (I still have tons of pictures to upload, though.)
I'm not comfortable joining their forum, y'know, coz of my total ignorance. Just hoping some Pinoys here are tinkering with it.

Mon Astillero 09-25-2008, 11:09 PM Nice collection you've got there Bobby. I'll bookmark it and take a look. Never been to Mindanao before, but will do one of these days.
Interesting find, this Zenphoto. When I get around to building my own site, this could be an option. Thanks for posting!
Be comfy joining the forum, there are nice people around here.
Carlo Leonardia 09-25-2008, 11:39 PM nice find.
Also been tinkering with a similar system... simpleviewer i think. Its more... simple (hehe) than zenphoto but its also a flash based gallery... low tech nga lng when compared to zenphoto.
Will definitely check zenphoto out and leave my feedback here. :)

I like the challenge of putting up the gallery, coz now I know I actually haven't completely roamed around Mindanao. A few provinces are missing. And I only got a few pictures in some, like Sulu. Man, I wanna travel around that island, if only there are no dangers involved. When I was there, after work, I stayed in the hotel all afternoon. I still can't forget that a good friend of mine was shot in the forehead while he was out shooting the sunset in Jolo alone.

Good alternative for pbase and the like, and on your own domain, and free. Just not easy tweaking for muggles like me.

dan de jesus 09-26-2008, 12:31 PM Sorry this is OT, can't help myself to post this....
Great collection you got there Bob! I hope someday, I can go there in Mindanao (Marawi, Tawi-tawi, Cotobato, and many more) and shoot "Land of the Promise" without thinking of anything, just walk around and shoot. Mindanao is beautiful, "The Land of the Promise" indeed ...I hope in the near future......
Carlo Leonardia 09-26-2008, 12:45 PM Bobby: are you using zenphoto in your current landofpromise site? I just finished installing zenphoto in my host and it does look a bit daunting. I also come from wsiwyg html, and i bet i have even less knowledge in php and css as you.
At least you were able to customize your index already. I'm still trying to figure out how to do that. :D

This ain't no OT, hehe, coz the gallery has been there for the longest time, as I started it in '03. Just wasn't able to update it as often as I want coz of the work involved with html. Only revived by using a new method of publishing and updating the site. :)
I've invited some friends there in Manila to come shoot with me here in Mindanao, through forums long before dpp. It was fun. The long drives, the food, all sleeping in one hotel room. Shoot like crazy. I'm sure they only have good things to say about Mindanao.
Those ole times ...

Yes, Carlo, I'm using Zenphoto now. Like you, it took over a week for me to realize how they were able to insert banners there. Use your kindergarten html skills, as I did. The key is to download the theme files (those ending in php) in your /themes/themename folder, then tinker with them, inserting codes as you go. That's themes/default in my case, coz i'm only using the default theme that comes with Zen.
To insert banner, I created a page in wysiwyg html (FrontPage in my case), place an image for my banner, then I checked on the html code. Then it's just a matter of copying the code in that part of the html page, and pasting it into the php file in your themes folder, then ftp the php file to your server. Of course you also have to ftp the corresponding image file for your banner.
Even just inserting additional text not in the original theme took a lot of effort from this muggle.
Now, nice to recruit more zenphoto users, so we could exchange ideas here.
