Hmm... it's called the E-P1, and recently Oly's been coming out with ads commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Olympus Pen 35mm half-frame camera. I guess the "P" stands for Pen.

I want this so badly... will probably put off my getting an E-620 until this one comes out so I can decide between the two.

ang sarap baunin nito around. way more portable than a Lumix G1. the question is how much would it debut?

joelcontreras

Rumors say around $999 with the 17mm 2.8 pancake lens. Price should go down once more become available.

David Tong

That's not a bad price at all...

GeraldBARIA

Any chance well see a nikon or canon equivalent of these mft format?!

Samsung is developing something a step further..a prismless APS-C format Hybrid system. (http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/digitalcameras/0,39001469,62051759,00.htm)

This is waaayyy exciting.

I still find the Olympus design much much cuter though.:)

I'll be waiting for a review of this cam before buying... now am thinking which one to buy... the E620 or E-P1... if the image quality is as good as the E620 I'll definitely buy the E-P1... :D

David Tong
06-16-2009, 04:31 PM
It's priced so well, results-wise, I don't think this'll differ too much from Oly's entry level cams, which is great.

The pancake lens is ridiculously affordable :D :D :D

A clear Xmas present now :D

$799.99 (with 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 lens)
$899.99 (with 17mm f2.8 lens and optical viewfinder)

*drool* :D

makes me want to buy a 25mm pancake lens just to join the bandwagon :))

Sir David, In a way I can feel your excited for this product.. I cant wait for your first set of photos once you finally get your hands in one of these.:)

GeraldBARIA
06-22-2009, 04:51 PM
I showed the picture of this to my friend and told him how cute I find this camera. He said it sucked! It looks bad because it looks like a digicam. He said one of the reasons why he wants to buy a dslr is because its big and black..that size and color makes anyone holding it in front of their faces look cool.hehehe Making dslrs look like p&s takes off that main distinguishing factor of them..kind of makes sense huh. I gues that reflex mirror is on the brink of extinction...lets enjoy how heavy and attention grabbing our current dslrs are..if this EP-1 design becomes a big hit, they might not exist anymore 3 years from now.:(:(:(

David Tong
06-22-2009, 05:01 PM
Hehe, big and black.... that's how he likes it? (sorry, couldn't help it...)

The mirror won't disappear anytime soon hehe... Unless human hands start to shrink, I don't think the SLR body design will change much.

GeraldBARIA
06-22-2009, 05:12 PM
Hehe, big and black.... that's how he likes it? (sorry, couldn't help it...)

Wahehehe!

I do have a question about the black color though? What's up with that? Does it have some light scattering effect or something if we give out dslrs a different color? Like the white pentax k2000?

David Tong
06-22-2009, 05:15 PM
Simple, reduce possibility of glare/reflection especially during film days... not to mention it just is a practical color to use... unless you buy cameras to suit your clothing.

GeraldBARIA
06-23-2009, 07:21 AM
Ahh..so there's is a technical reason for that. I really find the white dslr cool..Im actually thingking of getting one of those skins that you can personalize the design of and have it cover your gadget (cells,cameras,ipods..etc). But Im concerned about this color issue.:)

daniel go
06-23-2009, 09:27 AM
Seems like the E-P1 is made up of plastic with a thin metal/aluminum cover. Pretty disappointing for its price point but I still like it though. :)

David <-- Once you go black (and big), you don't go back :)

Me, the DSLR look is getting old. A lot of people has that now (whether wannabee or serious hobbyist). Film is the cool thing now including lomo (overrated or not) and small cameras that have that range finder look is definitely kewl :D

EP-1 Hands-on
http://blog.duncandavidson.com/2009/06/quick-olympus-e-p1-hands-on.html

Let’s cut to the chase. Would recommend the E-P1 as a general purpose all-around enthusiast camera based on what I experienced today? The answer is a totally unqualified yes, especially if you’re looking for something smaller than an SLR. Put it this way, cameras like the Canon G10 are no longer of interest at all to me at all. Do I want to replace my Nikon D700 bodies with the E-P1 for my professional work? Ha! No way. Do I want a Digital PEN for all those times where the bulk or noise of my Nikon or Canon gear is too much? Oh yes. Yes indeed.

Olympus marketed a model with a fixed mirror decades ago. Do you remember the model?

David Tong
07-03-2009, 09:45 AM
Noel: Exactly the model this EP-1 is commemorating, the Olympus Pen F.

Daniel:
SGD1600 with twin lens kit and optical viewfinder, 8GB and extra batt included.
SGD1400 with 17mm and accessories
SGD1250 with the 14-24 and accessories
SGD250 for the flash

All prices include 7% Tax

Quite tempting... If I could sell my useless Xacti and my extra unopened printer hmm... hehe

Once the demo units arrive, Axis Global (Olympus Phils.) in cooperation with Olympus Club of the Philippines will be having a soft launch/sneak peak of the EP-1. Hopefully by our next Monthly meeting (July 15). We will invite guests for them to have a hands on experience of the EP-1.

Let's just hope that those demo units arrive soon, Grey units may be well on their way to Philippine shores as i speak.
