View Full Version : On Assignment Part V: Photo Expedition To Mount Mayoyao, Ifugao
nino_carandang 09-22-2008, 11:33 AM Hello DPP Readers,
It is our pleasure to announce the fifth installment of DPP's ON ASSIGNMENT series courtesy of Columbia Outdoor Apparel. This challenge may be toughest yet since the lucky DPP members chosen for this mission will be climbing Mount Mayoyao in Ifugao.
The expedition will start on October 21 and will end on October 26.
The mission:
1) Climb Mount Yayoyao
2) Shoot the Apfo'or, Makaliwagha and Lehbong Burial Tombs
3) Shoot Chuyong Viewpoint and the Falls
4) Travel to Cultural Heritage Sites
5) Be part of he Pat-Yay Photo Expedition
6) Cover the rice wine making, native hut assembly and palay harvesting activities on Mount Mayoyao
As always, DPP will be pre-selecting ONE Team Leader for this trip. This means we may choose up to FOUR members from this Forum to go on the trip.
Please take notice of the dates for this trip. The trip will start on a weekday (Tuesday to Sunday) so for those of you who work, you will have to file for a leave, or call in sick - but there will be evidence that you were somewhere else. Only put your name on this list if you are 100% certain you can make the dates. Because if we choose you and you suddenly back out, the ON ASSIGNMENT will be compromised.
This will be a VERY demanding trip so if you don't think you can handle it physically, don't list yourself.
This thread will only be open until October 15, 2008.
As always, to all our members who want to go ON ASSIGNMENT with DPP let us know why you want to take up this challenge.
As a bonus, Columbia Outdoor Apparel, Mountainsmith and Sea To Summit will be giving away special items to equip participants of the ON ASSIGNMENT.
So, START SIGNING UP!

Nino, just because you couldn't keep up with me on our hike to Mt. Pinatubo, you're already assuming I take drugs!!
Celebrex 400mg (best pain reliever after the hike). hehehe....:Dum:

mitzpicardal 09-22-2008, 11:55 AM I have several Columbia pants (convertible and non-convertible), shorts, shirts (long sleeved and short sleeve), caps, hats, shoes, and socks. A Mountainsmith daypack, 50L weekend pack, and a pouch. Plus a couple of Sea to Summit dry sacks. I also have a Columbia sticker on my tripod and panohead case. My wife and son also wears Columbia pants, shirts, and caps. And i also wear regularly my black polo shirt with DPP and Columbia logo. That should be enough to select me for this trip . Right Dino? (read: loyalty award :D). Do i need to ask Grandma Gert Boyle endorsement?

sobrang dali. as in.
it's like this. you go to mayoyao and shoot what you can from the comforts of your inn. you leave it to the team leader to hike his ass to the top in the frigid cold of dawn, let him (or her) take the first light shots and just make sure to prepare coffee or instant pancit canton when he's back.
just kidding! :D
a reasonably fit person can move well in mayoyao. just ask raul echivarre...he has shot there. i mean, joel, if raul can make it, what's keeping you? (don't be an expectator ok, ikaw pa, mr. for-the-love-of-photography! make your pitch.)
koya jake...i'm not the best person to ask right now about "mountaineering" hardships. my thighs are still hurting from a 2-day traverse climb of mt. ugo in benguet. i'm calling it the "durugang-tuhod" trek. hahaha :D

Ansbert B. Bidol 09-22-2008, 04:00 PM @Jake
about the question of Hike, I think you can make it.. In my opinion the hard thing in mountaineering is that one is not prepared not always physically but bringing the right gear/equipment and already planned the climb.. also control your phase and start jogging na hehe :D.. trans("ako nga medyo chubby na nakakaakyat pa rin hehe :D").
Aly_Reyes 09-22-2008, 04:01 PM No correction. I just arrived from the US by then!!! LOL!!!

So, YOU ARE joining this OA!!
Your "new toys to test" is already a good enough reason to be selected. Nice Pitch Koya Derick!!
jay jallorina 09-22-2008, 04:15 PM i just want to correct a misconception that's brewing. i believe this trip is not a mountaineering expedition. yes, you have to be physically fit...but you are not going to go hiking and climbing all day long. and as far as i know, a lot of tourists have actually gone to mayoyao and enjoyed the rice terraces and culture. there's a wonderful story waiting to be photographed in mayoyao. this trip/assignment is more a question of passion rather than endurance.
i think the locals here are far friendlier and more willing to be photographed than those in batad. this is a more exotic place to shoot than the previous OA venues. the portraiture / documentary angle alone is worth the long trip :)

pitch na bro
@Larry
pitch ka pa rin :p
Alford Ronduen 09-22-2008, 07:34 PM DPP,
Pls consider me for OA5. Here's my justification:
1. I'm familiar with the Ifugao language, the terrain and the culture. I spent my 1st 16 years in Ifugao (mom got assigned there as a doc). I can blend in/communicate with the locals and later shoot their portraits and activities; I'm physically fit to trek mountains and ricefields; I shoot mostly landscapes, and I can make myself available on the said dates.
2. I got KO'd in OA1 and OA2 - one more KO and I'll be 0-3 / struck-out :) I prepared and practiced more for the next OAs. I led a group of photo hobbyists to Anawangin Cove (9 people), Taal Crater (15 people), Batanes (4 people), Callao Cave (went solo) and recently in Batad & Banaue, Ifugao (18 people). My photos from these trips were shared in DPP on the links below. Now, I'm more prepared for OA and confident I can come up with positive results.
Anawangin Cove: http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=12077
Taal Lake/Crater: http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=13531
Batanes: http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=13958
Callao Cave: http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=15197
Batad, Banaue, Ifugao: http://www.digitalphotographer.com.ph/forum/showthread.php?t=17058
3. I have gears which I believe can do the job. A reliable camera body, a landscape and a portrait lens, several filters (ND, GND, CPL, IR), a tripod and a pano head for some panoramic shots. I used all of them in my previous travels except for the pano head, now I'm rarin' to shoot some really wide panos.
4. I love to shoot at dawn and dusk so you can count on me to be outdoors wandering and shooting from ~4:30am to ~7:30pm.
What/How I plan to shoot (aside from the enumerated mission):
- Landscapes: sunrise/sunset light and fogs/clouds will surely add drama to the golden ricefields and vast mountains
- Shoot falls and rivers/streams with filters
- Panoramic shots of the terraces/mountains
- IR shots of the terraces/mountains
- Candid daily life activities
- Portraits of children and elders
- Farm activities (i have some farm photos here: http://acrondue.multiply.com/photos/album/50/The_Farm_Life
- Native houses, products (rice, wine, carvings, etc), tools
- Shoot the shooters (documentary for the OA5 thread)
5. I'm a team player. I'll do my best on whatever the team lead assigns me to shoot.
6. Count on me to be active on the OA5 thread upon returning.
7. I wear Columbia pants :)
8. Finally, it would be an honor to shoot with fellow DPP members and learn from them.
Tks!
Alford

dino_de_leon 09-22-2008, 10:05 PM wow been away a few hours and this many responses already! thanks a lot for your interest guys/ gals. following jay's response on the hike, i assure you all it will not be that strenuous. challenging yes but death defying? nah! having fun outdoors is what Columbia Sportswear is all about...same goes for this OA.
as long as you are physically fit to walk long distances and carry your gears then no problem. the real good thing about this is not only will you get to see the culture of mayoyao, you get first hand experience as well! and document everything at that!
not to mention you get cool stuff from Columbia Sportswear! add Mountainsmith and Sea to Summit...what more can you ask!? some have to pay lots of cash for an opportunity to explore Mayoyao but us in DPP get this for free!
so let's see those pitches! ;D

Ickhoy De Leon 09-22-2008, 11:57 PM whoa!! wanna feel how to make a pitch.... the cranking out your copy points to make your pitch "the" pitch... juicing your brains-out to get that proper balance of style, authoritativeness, and humor to cut-through the clutter ...and the excitement surrounding the "wait" if you get the nod or not.. hhmmmmm.......
Kaya lang..

Rolly Magpayo 09-23-2008, 10:37 AM My Pitch:
For DPP: Im a Photographer, Painter and an Art Director. I have the necessary equipment and the skill. I will produce great photos
For the Group: I'm a well traveled person, I'm a Mountaineer, trained Mountain Search and Rescue Volunteer. I can cook, I'm good with navigation and I have advanced skills to survive in the outdoors. I'm a good leader and a great follower (Ask Dan Pagulayan). I will be an asset rather than a liability.

Nino,
Now, Rolly's a guy you'ld want to be part of the team, if not Team Leader or Vice Team Leader.
He's the go to person in the following areas (in addition/complementation to what he pitched):
1. Livening up the group -- he never runs out of stories
2. Guidesmanship -- he knows the Mountain Province a lot (he's had ages of experience in altruism in that part of the world)
3. Leadership and Organization -- EBs galore under his belt
4. Photoshop -- what can I say? He's been at it since version 3 (or earlier?)
5. Photography skills -- ehem! excellent!
6. Photo gear -- respectable enough, but look at his output, not his pana
7. McGyver situations -- you'll be surprised
GO, ROLLY, GO!!!!!
I VOTE FOR DAN TO BE THE TEAM LEADER!!!! :)
Thanks a lot!!!! I hope DPP chooses the best for this assignment. COmpared to those who already pitched, my skills are close to amateurish. I think I should now withdraw (with all candor, sans regrets).

I second the motion of Rolly to be Team Leader or at least part of the team for this adventure. He's got loads of experience in this type of trekking and he's fit for this kind of adventure. Just visit the link he's posted and you'll be amazed at the places he's been to. Not the usual touristy spots but those places that are very hard to reach. GO ROLLY GO!

err... photographers should be the ones doing the pitching and not the equipment. :)
jerrytieng 09-23-2008, 09:09 PM This will be a kick-ass team and nothing beats a photo+mountaineering trip (okay it's not an expedition) with DPP folks you love hanging out with.
I want to go as I want to learn how to do landscapes from Jay.
I love to cook so I'll gladly take that assignment.
Koya Derick needs to see more of his own country so bring him along so I can also learn how to deal with the government from him.
I'd love to learn how to do proper panny's and HDR images from Mitz.
I can help Kuya Aly carry his macro lens.
I also know how to properly apply Band-Aid.
I've trekked a couple of mountains in B.C. but nothing serious in the Philippines so this will be the chance to rectify that.
I love capturing the rough/raw beauty of our countryside and share the images via DPP because I'd like to show our countrymen how beautiful the Philippines is and hopefully convince them to stay and reverse the brain drain...
Whether I get selected or not, I'll invite myself and pay my own way. I won't miss this for anything!

In line with this, I just want to highlight the trek to Pat Yay from Mayoyao. If you think Batad, Hapao, Hungduan or Bangaan is picturesque enough...wait till you get a view of the two! This will be an exclusive hike as well for those joining the OA and will be led by a good friend of ours in the likes of Regie Pablo (Mt. Everest Summiteer).
And again don't worry it will not be a "killer" hike. Challenging? Yes! Fun? HELL YEAH! :D
nino_carandang 09-25-2008, 09:51 AM hi dino, maybe you can give them a preview of sights (and sites) to see during the trip?

Yes it's drink all the rice wine you can! Just make sure you'll still be sane enough to do your photo assignments or walk in a straight line the next day.
And yes this event will coincide with that of MFPI's. We are the co-presentor of the event also :)

yes that pat-yay village :) as to regie it's only about 4hrs...perhaps add another hour or more for the photo opps...might spend the night there as well.

4 hours? Is he sure? (and i don't mean to question Reggie ha).
Mayoyao is some 30 kilometers east of Batad / Bangaan.... about 3 to 4 hours by van. Eh Pat-yay is in the opposite direction... around 3 hours walk from Batad itself.
Anyhow...I do agree that the rice terraces in Pat-yay is expectacular! :)
Can i still have my Columbia polo patched with a DPP logo? I've had it for a number of months na :)

as for your polo...sure just send it in any of our stores :)
jake_amora 09-25-2008, 12:04 PM Thanxs Tok, Pao and Sir Aly!
jake_amora 09-25-2008, 12:07 PM I will start my pitch by saying that today is my Birthday. And I would not want any greater gift than to be part of the next On Assignment Team of DPP. But no, I will not anchor my pitch solely on the pretence of birthday gifts. (but it would really be nice though if it was handed as gift…) so on with my pitch…
Reasons why DPP should chose me:
I have the gear. My lens line up includes canon 10-22mm, 28-135mm IS, 50mm 1.8 and a sigma 70-200 2.8 which will allow me to adopt to different shooting challenges whether it be a magnificent landscape or documenting the traditional rice wine making. Plus I have a tripod and filters that is needed for some landscape shots.
I have the mindset. Shoots with great landscapist in the likes of Norman Aquino, Jay Jallorina, Randall Cipriano and the rest of the chizmaxx boys kinda develops this mindset. If I am going to shoot a landscape I expect to get wet, I expect to get dirty, might risk my gears for damages, I might fall, I might get hurt but one things for sure… I will nail that shot in the way that few people will be able to. I also shoot a lot of street and photojourn shots during my past photoshoots with fellow dpp members here. So switching from landscape to portraits to documentary shots is not really a problem for me.
I have the hiking experience. Traversing mountains is nothing new to me. Although I am not really what you will call a mountaineer but my line of work had taken me to the mountains of Palawan, Mindoro and Batangas. I work for a telecommunications company and part of my work is visiting telecommunication towers that are located on top of mountains.
Lastly,
I have the drive. I have been doing photography for almost 2 years now but not everyone in our family approves of it. They say that its just a waste of time, money and energy and I’ll never get anything out of it. And in a sense they are right, I have never gotten anything out of photography since I started doing it except for some small bruises on my knees and elbows, pats on the back and a smile on my face which was all fine by me. The only thing that kept me going all this time was my strong love for photography. But then after two years I felt tired and wanted to give up. Only to realize that I love it too much to really give it up and so now I am going for my second wind. This time I want something solid for them to also see that this is something that I love doing and have a chance to be good at it. For now I have realized something… This is not my hobby. This is my art.
And did I mention it’s my birthday today?
danpagulayan 09-25-2008, 12:21 PM Nino, Jake is done with his pitch. Close the thread na!!!:Grin:
There you have it. Team members-to-be who are:
- landscapists
- portaitists (is there such a term?)
- whatever-ists
- hikers/mountaineers
- able-bodied
- willing
- know the place
- have the gear
- have their own free time (or have been allowed to do so by ....)
- driven (except Aly, who has a driver :))
- in dire need of excercise :D:D:D
(Just kidding..):)
Darryl Ong 09-25-2008, 12:50 PM My lens line up includes canon 10-22mm, 28-135mm IS, 50mm 1.8 and a sigma 70-200 2.8

Yes it does! Going to Mayoyao we will be taking the Santiago, Isabela route :)
mic_narra 09-25-2008, 03:52 PM here's my pitch
Why DPP should pick me
Passion – is what keeps me driving. I wanted to join in this photo expedition to learn more about photography. It’s not only inside the studio, inside the bar or in the garden will flowers and insects. I wanted to experience photographing mountains and waterfalls and other landscapes I’ve never seen before.
Endurace – I experienced walking under the heat of the sun in the deserts of Ilocos Norte (Sand Dunes) just to get at the other side of the desert (which is a beach). My shoes got broken that time.. still I survived. I know climbing the Mt. Mayoyao is different but I believe in myself that I can make into the top. (I hope it’s not difficult to climb not like Mt. Mourdor :D)
Experience – In my 9 months in photography I know in myself that somehow I developed my skill, even if it’s a little. I’d learned a lot about it even if I don’t have any workshop. Reading and practicing makes me more skillful. I’m promising that I’ll deliver great images like you’ve never seen before.
Gears – Even I only have 1 lens… I’m good to go. (of course I’ll try to borrow some lenses from my colleagues)
nino_carandang 09-25-2008, 03:55 PM here's my pitch
Why DPP should pick me
Passion – is what keeps me driving. I wanted to join in this photo expedition to learn more about photography. It’s not only inside the studio, inside the bar or in the garden will flowers and insects. I wanted to experience photographing mountains and waterfalls and other landscapes I’ve never seen before.
Endurace – I experienced walking under the heat of the sun in the deserts of Ilocos Norte (Sand Dunes) just to get at the other side of the desert (which is a beach). Even if my shoes got broken I survived.
Barefoot? Somehow I expected that.
jampangilinan 09-25-2008, 04:02 PM @MIC - ahaha! atlast, GO MM! if ever... I'll wait for this.. "I’m promising that I’ll deliver great images like you’ve never seen before." hee hee!
mic_narra 09-25-2008, 04:03 PM Barefoot? Somehow I expected that.
lol! yeah.. actually i'm faster when running in barefoot. :P
totie.bruno 09-25-2008, 04:19 PM go, go, go mic!!! :)
Spam Jalandoni 09-25-2008, 05:45 PM lol! yeah.. actually i'm faster when running in barefoot. :P
you should be :D hehehe that mordor experience should be a big help :D hehehehe
LeandroLosaria 09-25-2008, 06:28 PM Some said i was a trying-hard photographer
Some said my photos were "unreal"
Some said that my photos sucked
Though it stung at first, now, I just use these comments to push myself even further, to learn more, and to take better photos
I have already ran from baton-wielding, angry (PBCOM) sekyus
I have already been "picked-up" by roaming SLEX patrol men
I have waded through waist-deep murky waters
I have lied flat on mud while seeing other photographers' incredulous looks
I have also clung onto walls with a threat of a 50-foot drop
Just for that one shot that i have envisioned in that moment
I work well with a group
I am goal-oriented
I am a team player
I know i can do this
Intensity-wise i know i have what it takes
Skill-wise i know i can bring home great photos
Passion-wise ... T*ngn*, 101%!
I believe I deserve this
nina de guia 09-25-2008, 07:18 PM Leandro, hehehe.. i believe in you.. go go! hehehe
ronaldmayuga 09-26-2008, 06:54 AM I want to be a part of this challenge because in 5 months in this addictive photography, I never experienced visiting provinces or other places for the purpose of shooting landscapes and other subjects. Most of my landscape photos are taken inside Mega Manila only.. I want to experience a different level of photography.
Having the Canon 450D and the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens, I am proud to say that I produced great results using the said lens. Given the opportunity to be a part of the team, I will do my best to give great photos and will not be a burden to others. Being a member of the ON ASSIGNMENT 5 team is a dream of every photographer especially landscape photographers.
I am currently working now at Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC near star city) as a Satellite Engineer. In my 3 months in the said company, I already experienced lifting heavy devices like modules, modulators, etc. And climbing AM and FM towers which are hundred feet from the ground – this is the reason why I can say that I am mentally and physically fit.
Lastly, I love challenges. I do not easily give up. I fight for what I believe is right. I can learn easily and am very willing to learn from the group. GOD bless to everyone.:)

OT- @an average of 194 posts per month from you for the past 3 years, you can get the differentials in 7.2 months w/o Earl posting from today. So far those are the variables - you post more, or Earl stops. So far, Earl's post have not been moving.:Grin:

RANDY WHERE'S YOUR PITCH? :D
Goodluck!!
Roark.L.Masbad 10-06-2008, 02:08 PM here goes nuthin' ... :D
I love the outdoors. Having been born in the shadow of Mt. Apo and regularly going up for clean-up climbs in the past, the mountain treks for this assignment will be easy for me. And I don't have qualms of camping out if need be.
I am a team player and a trooper. No one gets left behind. I believe every team member should have all the chances to take great photographs and to be at the same place at the same time to do so. I may not be able to help you carry your gear but I am a great motivator. I can easily adjust with the rest of the group. I think i know first aid. Jerry can put the band aid and I can help him with that too.
I am passionate in learning new things. The "assignment" and the opportunity to shoot with other photographers is another great venue for someone new to this craft (like me) to learn more. Just as our community here in Davao would say - learn, share, express. And the opportunity to learn from a landscape master and fellow photographers is something that a fellow 'scapist cannot pass up.
Oh, and I already have the permission slips from the necessary "authority" for this trip. :D
I am Roark "Wacky" Masbad and I am going On Assignment.
