Sorry guys, not sure if this has been discussed but I can't keep up with the volume of discussions here. Anyway, I've uploaded some black and white photos that I've scanned to my flickr: http://flickr.com/photos/nikonographer/
Much to my surprise when I viewed these in my uncle's PC, the photos were not at all black and white. They're more of blue and white! Did I do something wrong? Here's the workflow:
Scanned my negs with Epson R24something... it's a flatbed with neg scan capability. Saved the images and opened them with CS2. I noticed that the color space is dot gain or something like that and in grayscale. So I converted it to RGB and set my workspace to sRGB, convert to workspace. When I tried the save for web function and reopened the image in CS2, it tells me that the image doesn't have an imbeded profile. This is why I don't use the save for web feature. Anyway, is there something wrong with my pics or could it just be my uncle's monitor (from a Compaq laptop)? Please advise. Thanks in advance.

Hi Pocholo,
Your Photos are black & white and there's nothing wrong with your images as well as your uncle's monitor. Please try this:
1. Use the Color Management Feature of your computer and set it at 1998 Adobe Gamma.
2. Kindly reset your workflow to RGB.
3. Go to Studio 58 and bring your digitized file and have it printed there using their Archival Inkjet Printer and Lysonic Paper for the final printout. You can have a test print using the Durst Lamda Laser Printer but you will already see the difference between an original black and white image and a desaturated color image in the monitor upstairs which is also calibrated.
4. If you find the third option to be expensive, you can always bring your original black and white negatives and have it printed the traditional way.
If this doesn't work. Let me know or you can ask Ronnie, one of the graphic artist at Studio 58 to check what's wrong with your digitized file. Have fun shooting black and white and try to simplify your workflow.

Your pics are fine Pocholo. At least, they look fine here on my calibrated LCD monitor. :)

My monitor is set to Adobe RGB 1998. Your monos are b/w to me. I like the generous cropping of some of your pictures.
And the muted post production treatment of the previous set. Great consistency.

It's b+w bro! :) You may need to calibrate your uncle's PC. Like what Eric said. Thanks.

Hi Eric.
Thanks for the inputs. My monitor and colorspace is always set to Adobe RGB '98. I only convert to sRGB when I upload because the default of web is sRGB. I realized this when I uploaded using RGB and noticed a color shift on my colored photos in flickr. I was then advised to use sRGB for web stuff.
This is my first time to scan black and whites since they're usually archived and printed so I'm not yet familiar with the conversions for consistency. I tried uploading my bw in grayscale but came out too dark on the net so I converted them to rgb. This is the gray area for me - no pun intended :)

To all,
Thanks for the tips and comments. I really appreciate it.
Mon,
I must admit some of the photos are a tad generous in cropping because of the lens and rangefinder. Kinda hard to nail it at times.
Thanks again guys.
