been looking at this lenses. i badly need a wide angle lens.

Sigma AF 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM or
Sigma AF 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG ASPH HSM or
Tamron AF 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 SP Di II LD ASL IF (A13) or
Tokina AT-X 12-24mm f/4.0 124 Pro DX or
is it better to get a third party prime?

any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

TIA!

Go for the Tokina 12-24mm f/4... Built like a tank with optics as good as a nikkor! :)

The Sigma 10-20mm is also a strong contender. Won one of last year's TIPA award for best consumer lens and it also covers a wider perspective than the tokina. :)

i remember asking the same question but only for sigma and tokina. most of the replies go for tokina because of built, quality, like nikkor and half the price. :)

That's because Tokina's founders are former Nikon engineers... :)

I'll go for tokina. I have the atx pro for 7 years and it's my workhorse lens.

Hi, im a newbie here.
Just want to share the review i read (popular photography magz) regarding the comparison of these lenses (sigma 10-20, tokina 12-24 and tamron 11-18). Hope this helps. :)

* Conclusions na agad.
"Tokina's 12-24mm offers a lot. First, a constant-aperture f/4 optical system makes it the fastest of the three. Also, as one of Tokina's esteemed Pro series, it's well constructed and will probably last for decades. Anyone using this lens on a copystand will appreciate its favorable light falloff characteristics. Evidence of vignetting disappeared by f/5.6 at all focal lengths except 12mm(f/8).(The other lenses tested showed darker corners until f/8 at every focal length.) FInally, those who shoot primarily in manual focus will enjoy its generous focusing ring, which at nearly 3/4 inch wide, is huge by contempory standards. Pricing : $500, right in the middle of the field.
For photographers who want to travel light, the Tamron 11-18mm is the obvious choice. At 13 ounces, this lens is 3/4 pound lighter than Tokina and noticeably different from the 16-ounce Sigma. Its slim proportions come at a price, though. The Tamron sell for $550. Less is more, as the saying goes, especially when it comes to pricing.
Finally, the Sigma 10-20mm was our top choice for a number of reasons. If ultrawide is your goal, this lens' focal length range has it. As its EX designation indicates, Sigma builds this lens for the pro market, and so it feels unusually rugged. For our money, the Sigma's greatest asset might be its supersilent HSM Motor. Visit a dealer and compare the AF noise of this and Tamron. You'll see what we mean.
Shooters who flip for the dramatic perspectives of wide-angle close-ups will find the Sigma's 1:6.7 maximum magnification a source of inspiration. And, at $479 (P28,500 @ JT Photoworld), Sigma gives you a lot of lens for your money."

My vote goes to Sigma.
Wider + CA free (I hate that purple thing :) )

happy tokina 12-24 owner here. picked this over the sigma due to the following:

> build. its a tank. enough said.
> sharpness. comparable to its nikkor counterpart. the sigma was a bit soft (based from the unit copy that i tried).
> constant aperture
> price (almost half the price of the nikkor)

Personally use the "Popeye" Sigma AF 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG ASPH HSM I bought from Niño. Great outdoor lens ultra wide angle zoom that thinks like a prime lens in the distortion department. It is a rectilinear lens. Took some tests a few months ago against the 14mm 2.8 and the 20 1.8 at JTPhoto and it didn't produce barelling distortion unlike the two primes. Very good contrast and warm colors. The HSM really focuses fast, or at least faster than my 50 f/1.8 prime.

But because of its bulbous front element, attaching filters would be tricky at best, because it will produce severe vignetting. And speaking of vignetting, at a certain aperture and focal length, this lens produce some vignetting on the left corners of the frame. It is fat and heavy but I feel it balances perfectly on my 20D.

And best of all it protects my investment as it is a standard full-frame lens. HTH

i'm considering two wide angle the canon 10-20 and the sigma 10-22,, my mian concern is the pice canon 10-20 goes around 35k ( i think base on amazon ) while sigma goes for 25k ( and it already has a lens hood ),, is the 10k difference worth the price if i get the canon wide angle or should i settle for the sigma? thanks in advance

I was able to try both b4 I bought 1. For me the sigma is better coz of the coverage although the tokina produced warmer shots. Sharpness is pretty much the same and build quality of both lenses are good. Price diff is only 2k. If I were you try both . Im sure after you test them youll be able to decide wc one to get.
