It would be good to find out what other photographers use as their workhorse lens? or
all around lens?

I use my 28-70 f 2.8 .. love this lens..

It's the 17-55 DX 2.8 for me.
When I do use 2 bodies, the other lens will definitely be the 70-200 VR 2.8.

Is this a Nikkor lens, AFS? If so, this is what they call the "Beast"...

"The beast is the nickname for the Nikon 28~70 AFS F2.8 zoom because of it's weight and big lens hood! It is a very beautiful and sharp lens....

Hi dodie,

Can you tell me where did you get your 24-85 and how much?

I've been thinking of that also...

Where you able to compare that with the 28-70 f2.8?

About 80% of the time my 60mm f/2.8 micro is the lens attached to my S2. It's my "default" lens. Love the colors of a prime for portraiture work and for fun-walking-round images, it's awesome because you can come up so close. Plus something about working with a fixed focus length makes you work harder for your shot. I acquired this shortly after my 55mm 2.8 (no longer in production) succumbed in a quiet natural death.

:) I only found out recently that the 28-70 has the nickname, the "Beast". It really describes this lens so well. Weight-wise its not much bigger than the 17-55 but when using it, can really feel the weight difference.

In HK, I would recommend you try Man Shing (got mine there, look for Frank) and Wing Shing over at Mongkok, Tin Cheung (2 floors-lots of stuff) and New Sankyo (look for Tony), both located at TST are also very competitive.

Enjoy your trip.

I use the Sigma 18-50/2.8 for events coverage. It was my first lens since I bought my camera as a body only kit. Pretty underrated since it doesn't have all the niceties of Nikkors (Mainly AF-S SWM and M/A), but it's served me well enough. Only problem is reach, so I added a 105VR for the long shots.

Sir Levi,

Colors are definitely warmer with the 18-50 than with any of the Nikkors that I've tried, so it tends to be a little tricky shooting with both this lens and Nikkors on a shoot. The newer 17-70 does better in that respect but it's not a constant-aperture lens. Sharpness is good to very good at the center at all apertures and only gets better as you stop down from 2.8. It would be a worthwhile upgrade if you're still using an 18-70, except you lose the niceties of AF-S. If only Sigma would come out with an HSM version ....

Hi guys, Hi Levi,

The 18-70 can also shame some of the prime lenses I use for the studio! If I use f8 to f16 I see NO difference with the 50mm to my eye! I was mildly astonished at this.

This is 18-70 is weak wide open -compared to expensive f2.8 zoom lenses. But I'm yet to get a client who can guess rightly what lense I use.

If I have funds, the 18-200VR is a great, great lense to have...no more changing lenses! LOL

B-)

i choose the 17-55 over the 17-35:) id love to get the 17-35 though in the future when budget permits.

Ok naman yung 17-55 DX Carlo, as it takes on both 17-35 and 28-70 (with respect to focal length usefulness), as the DX King of events... :)

yeah i know but when i shoot landscapes i always think in the back of my head what if i had the 17-35:) the 17-35 is known to have superior resistance to ghosting/flaring and ca as compared to the 17-55. the 17-35 outperforms the 17-55 when shooting landscapes and architeural scenes.

:D he he he... You'll still avoid shooting directly at the sun naman eh even if you have that high resistance... The thing I like most about the 17-35 is the focusing distance... Very useful indeed. :)

Mine would have to be my 28-70 f/2.8 - I plan to use it until the AF breaks down or the lens fogs up forever. Super sharp and worth lugging around (just have to remember to remove the cam + lens from my neck every now and then).

I wouldn't say I like one more than the other since I use both of them. But I agree with you that on a dSLR, the Beast is not wide enough hence my 17-55 gets more use as my "normal" zoom. The 28-70 I use for more specific shoots. :)

It's excellent for portraiture, but is a bit long for DX bodies ( 85 = 127 @ 1.5x crop), sharpness IMHO is better than it's little sister. You definitely have to try one to see for yourself. Peace!

The 17-55 is almost like the 28-70 for digital with the 1.5x crop put into consideration. But the 28-70 seems to be more sturdy in construction as well.

I wouldn't mind having a 17-55 if I had extra cash.

Since I'm stuck with a 28-70, I'll make do with it, its really good sharp and fast lens. Besides, bling factor is a 10 out of 10 because its enormous. They don't call it the Beast for nothing. hehe.

I have to concur with the 85 f/1.8 being a very good lens. My friend lent me his lens to try. Galing! Kaso I don't get to use it much, in fact once ko palang nagamit. Hirap kasi di akin baka madisgrasya. Kaya its just in my drybox.

Hope to buy it when I have extra cash. Bet the f/1.4 would be even better pa. But I'd get a 50 f/1.4 and 85 f/1.8 instead for the price of an 85 f/1.4.

Hey Earl, I've also thought about the FF factor. Had a chance to purchase a mint 17-35 for $850 this weekend to pair with my 28-70 but declined at the last minute since I realized I couldn't possibly let go of my 17-55 because of it's more usable range.

Also, I don't think I'd be able to afford a FF Nikon at the time it is launched so that is still a few years down the road. :(

Marton, the Zeiss 85 is something on a "YOU NEED TO WANT IT." basis. Really, if you lust for this lens, you should also highly consider the AF-D Nikkor version... It's hard to tell the difference between both when it comes to bokeh, but a slight upper hand goes to the ZF when it's about contrast. :D I'll try to dig in my files if I can find something which is not binded by a copyright clause... And I'll try to post later.

I think it's because it zooms or "creeps" on its own if you tilt the lens slightly downward that's why they call it that. :)

It's reminiscent of the old Tamron 28-300 designs... Which has a similar creep and worse case can be like a push-pull zoom lens... But I believe it wouldn't be that worse naman, or go to that extent coz it has other mechanics inside of it and it's not that cheap really...
