yeah, it's a cool browser. i like it too. if you have the time, try to read the comic strip that tells about the history/technology behind it (quite a long read and technical though).

some observations:

1. you need to re-install several plug-ins/applets like adobe/macromedia flash
2. downloads... you can install right away but can't download the installer
3. can't save the pictures in jpeg (unless i'm doing it wrong)

Hi Jonas....yah its cool! how come U cant download the installer? I did it with my Mozilla and its 475 kb of exe files? I can also save the pictures in jpeg. BTW Im using a Vista! What do U think of the pictures? are they more vivid and sharp than Firefox? ( Im comaparing it right now between the 2) I think this is the beta version....but its nice. Lets keep in touch and update each other on this new browser:)

There was already a thread about Google Chrome but I can't seem to find it now. Speedwise its about the same as my "tweaked" Firefox. It doesn't open maximized when you click on a link to open in another new page. The lack of options also diminishes its value for me. It also eats up a lot of memory looking at Window's Task Manager.

Impressive for a 1st time beta browser from Google... it's fast loading, and page rendering is also very fast. Still needs alot of work obviously since it's still in beta. The memory usage issue is due to the fact that every tab has it's own process in windows. This is a good idea, since some websites crash the browser, this way it will only crash 1 tab.... way cool. hehe. :)

Angelo: was wondering the same thing, I can't even find my own posts about that...

I like Chrome a lot, but so far, without mouse gestures, and inability to log into all my banking sites, I have to switch back and forth from Firefox.

been using it for days now, and seems quite good. tweaking it a little to fit my needs, but the customization is very limited compared to IE8. its just beta for now, hope it will be better on the official release. by then, i may use it as my default browser.

Hi David....how do U find it as a "picture" browser as compared to firefox? :)

hi diego,

i'm still in xp. when i download, my only option is to run the application. when i try to save pictures it saves the file in unknown format without any extension. and when i try to double click on it, it looks for an application that can read/open it.

as to the pictures, they all look the same to me as in internet explorer.

definitely it's faster to load because it's more memory efficient. google really put a lot of thinking and effort into it. example, each tab is mutually exclusive with the other tabs. so if one tab crashes, it does not crash the entire browser. there's an automated garbage collector also in the system such that fragmented memory spaces can be freed and re-used again as you continue browsing.

I actually tried to read through the comic strip tutorial but stopped after 30 or so pages as I had better things to do. :) I remember that one good thing would be that a google chrome window would release the memory allocated to it when you closed the window, unlike Explorer.

i like it. fast & clean... but does anybody know how to move the tabs below the bookmarks bar?

Bing: I don't think you can... Hmm
Diego: Hmm, I never use my browsers as a photo viewer, sorry... Or are you referring to browsing online photos?

My FF3 loads a lot slower than Chrome, but I don't know why, though...

Loading pictures or starting the browser? For faster rendering of web sites it's very easy to tweak Firefox.

Angelo: For viewing/loading... and I don't really wanna bother with tweaking FF... As long as they load my pages, I'm more of a UI guy anyway hehe... Right now, I'm using Chrome unless I'm trying to access java-based login sites.

Hi David...its for browsing online fotos. I find it more sharp, saturated and contrasty than IE, or FF3. Chrome is very fast to load. It uses more RAM....but its OK my Vista is upgarded to 3GBs RAM....hehehe. I dont mind if it is a beta version...as long it is FAST and the FURIOUS ....hehehe:)

Diego: Hmm, out of curiosity, I loaded a photo in LR, IE, FF3, and Chrome at the same time and did a screen cap... All 3 browsers rendered a different color from my LR hehe. Sharpness differences is a given as I don't sharpen my images in Lightroom.

see here (http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/theveed/untitled-3.jpg)

I'll check it again when I get to the office as the laptop display hasn't been calibrated for weeks.

Yah they are...as to my monitor and, if Im not mistaken, UR Chrome, FF are more saturated and contrast than IE! I find the LR ( R lower corner)...a little soft and dull. Thanks for comparing

David Tong

LR has no sharpening applied, and I think the preview hasn't been completely generated yet as well hehe... Just checked my LR file and turns out that's not the right copy that I should've captured for the comparison, this was a "zero" version where all settings were reset.

I'll post another one with the correct virtual copy... But for this thread, the three browsers showed different colors and my intent was closer to Chrome/IE than FF3's rendering for whatever reason.

I'm using it right now. This is soooo replacing that crappy, prima donna browser. i.e. IE.

here's an article that might help out those using multiple browsers or those trying all three and deciding which one to use :

I am not sure, how people are saying Chrome makes the picture viewing experience much better.
If your monitor is not calibrated for viewing photographs, chrome is as bad as FF2 or any other browser. To me, only Safari and Firefox (FF) 3.xx (there is a plugin) supports the ICC profile.

This pic (mine only) provides the difference,

One the left hand side part of the pic: Thats how Flickr shows the picture in Google Chrome.
One the right hand side part of the pic: Thats how Flickr shows the picture in Firefox 3.xx with "Color Management" plugin installed and colorvision defined profile selected.

Want hear other people experience...

me too.. IE8 Beta 2 is good. im using both IE8B2 & Chrome now, cant choose yet what will be the default.

David Tong

Both are far from being finished, though... But IE8 is taking the lead for me... I checked the memory usage when viewing YouTube videos, FF3 consumes 3x more memory than IE8 or Chrome...

Interestingly, when I activate FF3's color management, the colors are not close to PS/LR either... I'm not the only one as well...

Update, June 21, 2008 : We've received a small but steady stream of reports, primarily from Mac users, that enabling colour management in Firefox 3 causes certain hues in pictures with embedded profiles to display differently than either Photoshop or Safari, and in some cases the difference has been described as dramatic and that Firefox seems to be the one rendering the affected colours incorrectly. We've not seen this problem, either in the release version of Firefox 3 nor in daily use of betas over the past several months, but it's becoming clear that some users' machines are affected and that it's negating the benefit of turning on colour management in the new Firefox.

All this color issue is pretty annoying hehe.

I am starting to like google chrome with its omnibox and the how it gives a snapshot of the the most frequently visited websites when you create new tab

Now that I've used it more often, I find that it totally sucks in playing embedded movies and music.

chrome user here as well, i agree with everyone that its faster, i have some problems on loading Java pages though, and also, I can't clear the browsing and downloads history automatically..unlike in FF3 where you can set it to clear everything when you close it out, or maybe I just don't know how to do that in Chrome.

Anyone who knows how? TIA

You have to clear it manually which for me is a deal breaker. The lack of options is not good, I hope they improve on this when it goes from Beta to Final.

Google says that Chrome is the fastest web browser today, much faster than Safari.

I've tried and it is fast, but it's not as fast as I hope will be. Dont get me wrong... Then i've done a little tweaking in my firefox version 3 and it becomes much more faster than Chrome and Safari :)

my only wish is that it becomes color managed the same way firefox 3 is.
