Hi Jerry,

This was already answered by TJ Parpan in another thread including a brief history and some technical specifications. To summarize, the difference is that the latter works faster and is the newer version now available in the market. It would cost between Php 48.5 to Php 54k in Quiapo. This is a good lens that you will be needing in shooting events and weddings. Best Regards.

it is the same except that the af-s has the silent motor. so the af-s is much pricier.

the 80-200 AF-S is not in production anymore. getting a brand new one will be quite difficult. It's now replaced by the 70-200 AF-S with VR which costs quite a bit more.

Here's what TJ posted in the other thread. :)

A short history of the lens by thom hogan here:
http://www.bythom.com/70200VRlens.htm (http://www.bythom.com/70200VRlens.htm)
And to quote from it:

Nikon has had at least six previous f/2.8 telephoto zooms in this range:

• 80-200mm f/2.8 ED. This manual focus lens was first introduced in 1978 at Photokina. The lens has a unique rotating tripod collar and was a two-ring design, but only a handful were produced.
• 80-200mm f/2.8 ED. The most common of the manual focus versions uses a one-ring design and a full depth of field scale engraved on the barrel. The lens is distinguished by a huge 95mm front thread. Introduced in 1982, again, not a lot of these lenses were made.
• AF 80-200mm f/2.8 ED. The first of the autofocus versions appeared in 1987. Curiously, unlike most early AF conversions, Nikon appears to have made a few optical changes in this conversion, adding an element and making the front element the standard 77mm size used in most pro lenses.
• AF 80-200mm f/2.8D ED IF. The first D version appeared in 1992 and added no rotating front element.
• AF 80-200mm f/2.8D ED IF. A two-ring version of the classic design appeared next.
• AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8D ED IF. In 1999, Nikon added an AF-S version of the two-ring design, making a few other minor changes, as well.
All six of these lenses are universally regarded as being sharp, quality designs. Arguments abound about which of the AF versions is sharper than the other, with the most commonly held view appearing to be that the AF-S is the sharpest, the one-ring next sharpest, and the short-lived two-ring non AF-S as the weakest of the three. Frankly, however, they're all quite sharp and unless your handling is perfect, I doubt you'd be able to distinguish between them.

how come the non-afs version is still available "brand new?"

Hi Chewy,

There are still new units for sale that are probably unsold items. I'm not sure about the comment of Sonny but from what I know, Nikon still manufactures the F-6 Top of the line film-based SLR and the above-mentioned legendary lens fits well to that body as well as the new digital cameras.

Rosalie,

Thanks for the assistance. Can't remember which thread it was.

Jerry,

You're welcome. This lens is still available in Hidalgo. There are only two (2) stores in Manila that sell this zoom lens. Better get one before they ran out of supplies.

hey jerry, back when i was looking for an 80-200 late last year i found some new units of the afd and afs in hidalgo. in terms of pricing, the 80-200 afd is the cheapest in the lot while the 70-200 is the most expensive. the 80-200 afs price is closer to the price of the 70-200 than to the price of the afd.

as to whether the afs is out of production i think i read the same thing in some of the review sites. not sure though.

I read somewhere, it was left in the Nikon line-up since there was no replacement for this price level. It's a very popular lens given the price difference from the 70-200 VR. :)

It is rare to find the 80-200 AF-S brand new now since it has been discontinued. It was replaced with the 70-200 VR. :)

yup. i agree :) back when i found them, both of the stores only had 1 unit each. mind you this was sometime august/september last year, so i doubt they would still have those.

Just ordered the AF-D version and hopefully it would arrive tonight. Matching it with the Beast :). Hopefully NAS would stop after this... :Scared:

Was trying to source out the AF-S version but all i could find were used units through www.keh.com (http://www.keh.com) and www.adorama.com (http://www.adorama.com).

That's a very good combo John. I have the same combo and it works well for my purposes. I know some people have said that the 80-200 AFD is a bit slow focusing and I suppose it is compared to the 80-200 afs and the 70-200 VR, but by no means is it a slacker. It'll serve you well doing sports. Congrats on the combo and good luck on building your portfolio.

i have the afd 2 ring version... what i observed is its a bit slower in focusing compared to afs and afs vr... but the lens is a tack sharp :) sample shots in my flickr... :)

I also have the AF-D 2-ring. It's really sharp, but can't compare in focusing speed with the AF-S version (70-200VR and 80-200). However, I found out that i don't need that speed, if an object is moving against your x or y axis. However, if its moving against your z-axis (object moving away or towards you), then the speed plays an important part.
