hi guys,
w/c would you recommend...
the Canon EF-S f3.5-5.6 28-135mm IS USM
or
the Canon EF-S f4-5.6 17-85mm IS USM lens?
need an upgrade lens primarily for more zoom power than the 18-55mm kit lens on my 350D. will i be loosing much on wide angle shots with the 28-135? is there much difference in the zoom of 17-85mm vs. the 18-55mm?
thanks in advance...! :)

Almost everybody has this quandry when selecting their first lens other than the kit lens.
In terms of image quality, both are nearly the same except for the focal range.
When I first started, I got the EF (not EF-S) 28-135 just because I felt it had less overlap than the 18-55 kit lens. Some have opted for the EF-S 17-85 to replace the kit lens entirely. Any choice you make, it's a good one for the budget you have.
Going a bit more upmarket, there's the EFS 17-55 F2.8 IS for nearly 55k. You get a fast lens good enough for low light indoor shots while maintaining reasonable ISO.
Some will say the EF is a wiser choice because it supports full frame, but I don't know anybody with a full frame DSLR body who even uses non "L" zoom lenses.

I just bought a 30D and went for the EF-S 17-85mm.
Advantege:
- 2nd Gen IS, really good for low light situations in the absence of a flash and/or a tripod (and with the presence of really shaky hands)
Disadvantage
- nakukulangan ako sa zoom range... :)

i was able to try the EF-S 17-85 last year, and i'd have to say, i'm pretty happy with it..
had no problems shooting at night, and di rin naman ako nabitin... :)
i considered getting one before, but got a different lens since i know in a few years i'll be upgrading to a different body that might not be compatible with an EF-S...

consider the 17-40 f4 L, pretty cheap for an L quality lens. you can get it from 30-35k :)

I got mine for php29,500 sa Henry's (17-85mm). They threw in a hood for free. :)
If you need the ultra wide setting of the 17-85mm (which is really cool specially with the barrel distortion), get it. Otherwise, the longer 28-135mm should satisfy your zoom craving (the 28mm on a cropped body is still wide enough for group shots).

hey guys need your advice. If you have the money and you can only buy one lens, will you buy the 24-105 L lens or the 17-80 IS USM lens? I can not justify to my wife buying two.

I know you want the 24-105L (1100USD) but the wifey wants you to get the 17-85 (500USD) and use the savings to bring the kids to school next sem. hehe
