What photographic related equipment/gear have you purchased that you wish you hadn't? Also, how much did it cost you and why do you think it was a bad purchase?

Here's a list of what I have regretted buying in my 2 years into this hobby:
New style Giottos rocket blower. Cost: $8 - A piece of crap. Top part keeps falling off if you squeeze too hard. Should have gotten the old style instead.
Nikon 24-120mm VR Cost: $530. - Images are muddy. Never used it much. Sold for $350 a year later
Nikon 105mm f/2 DC Cost: $650. - Soft wide open and has less contrast than the 105mm VR. Sold for $675
77mm Tiffen enhancing filter. Cost: $35 - Found out that the effect can be easily replicated in Photoshop or in-camera. Sold for $85! (Retail was like $120)
Small crumpler shoulder bag. $65 - Too small for my needs. (Always a problem with buying bags on the internet). Sold for $75
Lowepro Minitrekker backpack. Cost $85. I just realized that I'm not much of a backpack person since I haven't used this bag in almost a year.
77mm Tiffen Soft filter #2. Cost: $35 - I didn't know better when I got this. I thought it would be something cool but who wants blurry images?
Nikon MC-36 remote. Cost: $100 - Too bulky like a TV remote. Sold for the same price and got the smaller and cheaper MC-30 instead
Nikon DR-4 right angle viewfinder attachment. Cost: $85. I thought it would be great not to press your nose against the back of the camera when shooting low but so far, I haven't used it.
Nikon F100 Cost: $325. Bought it bec. it was in "like new" condition and was cheap. I thought of using my full-frame lenses on a film body in order to have the full coverage but I still I havn't used it since I bought it 6 months ago.
Nikon SB800 Cost: $275 - Bought it since it was a great deal but don't really need a 4th one.
Nikon 12-24mm f/4 DX. Cost $750 Bought this to compare against my Sigma 10-20 but didn't really need it. Will sell to get the 18-200VR instead.
Manrotto 684b Neotec monopod with RRS clamp and swivel head. Cost $150. I though this would be a good replacement for my current monopod combo since you can easily adjust the length by just pressing the lever on the side. I actually still prefer my old set up since it's lighter and more rugged..
Nikon AH-4 leather hand-strap. Cost: $45. Bought this as a spare in case I get the D80(which I've now realized I'm not going to yet bec of the Fuji S5). Item came in not so good condition(even my other 1 year old strap was better). In hindsight, I should have asked the seller more questions and pictures rather than purchasing it immediately.
Manfrotto clamps. Cost: $75 bought it because it was highly recommended by "strobist" for placing the flash in various locations but so far, I have not used it.
Set of Kenko extension tubes Cost: $100 - Saw some awesome macro shots using the 200mm f/2 VR and thought it would be cool to replicate that. Summer has come and gone though but I still haven't had a chance to use it. Maybe I'm not much of a macro person but I'm not giving up on this one yet.
Gray Card: cost $12 - One of those that I keep reading about saying that is useful for correcting white balance issues but I found that I can just eyeball the adjustments in Nikon Capture.Care to share yours?

Edit: Updated to include #17

Here's mine. Haven't bought too many stuff yet.

1. First camera bag: smallish lowepro shoulder bag (can't recall the model). Became useless when I bought more lenses.

2. Second bag: Tamron adventure 7. Didn't like the fact that it wasn't conducive to spur of the moment shooting.

3. For the UW camera: switched to threaded wet lenses from bayonet mount lenses. PITA to switch underwater and the WA lens results weren't up to par with the bayonet lenses.

4. For the UW camera: canon housing with the oval lens port. WTF was canon thinking? Had to buy an ike housing which needed new wet lenses (see gripe #3).

BTW, zandy, that's a loooooooot of stuff.

The Canon 10D, checked the reviews and it mentioned that it was a great camera, What I failed to check was that Canon was coming out with a newer model the 20D in a few months time. Ended up a buying the 20D as well and eventually a Mark II 1D, gave the 10D to my brother who suddenly developed photography as a hobby

1. Nikon SU-4. Never got to used it then the SB800 came along.

2. External battery pack for my ex-D1x. The right solution to the wrong engineering design is to buy a new camera. Sold the battery pack for a profit and the D1x for 99T (got it for 240T *sheesh*).

I have a few purchases I've regretted but luckily were able to sell them so I guess I'm ok. A few that I can remember:

1.) Crumpler Tall-e bag, found it too bulky and since compartment was divided, very limited the size of lenses that will fit. Have to agree, problem with buying online and not seeing an actual unit.

2.) Tiffen ND Grad 77mm, not really effective since you're stuck with just turning it, can't move it up and down to follow the horizon. An impulse buy.

I can imagine it being harder for you since eBay is always an option and there are usually great deals there.

i have had little regrets with my gear and the ones i did regret getting i was able to sell anyway so no problem:)

1. crumpler $7mill home: was dissapointed with the enormous size. have to admit it fit all my gear but was to big and not stylish enough. was able to sell

2. tamrac stealth reporter: nice sized bag but found it to boring looking so i got a refund and traded it for a tamrac velocity 7 which i also sold.

3. mcd1 cord for d70s: regrett buying it becasue i sold my d70s before i giot my hands on it. was able to sell though

4. nikon 35-70: got it used and reasonable but it was the old ais version and i hate manually focusing

5. nikon 14mm f2.8: got this lens before i got my d200. had it for a week but was so dissapointed with the pics and was scared to use it becasue of the huge bulbous dome without any filters. sold locally for a profit in another board.

6. nikon 16mm fisheye: was so cool but decided i had to sell it becasue dint really need it and needed money to fund my camera upgrade.

7. nikon tcIIe teleconverter: got this from a 70-200 owner for my 80-200 afd only to find out that it wasnt compatible on afd lenses. my fault for not doing the necessary research. sold at a local forum as well

thats about it the rest of my items i do not regret

Here are some of my purchases which I regret in buying:
1. Cokin 81B Filter (62mm) - I regret buying this piece of crap simply because it was a Cokin. I found out that it was not also doing some color correction but making the images blurry (even when clean) and there was some flaring when attached. I gave this to my gf and I bought a B+W 81B filter instead.

2. B+W 81B Filter (62mm) - I found out that I don't really need a 81B filter when I learned to this Photoshop. I can do these in PP. :(

3. Velbon Sherpa 600R - Just one drop and one of tthe legs was disattached and one of the screws were missing. I replaced with a non-Velbon screw and sold it.

4. Cheap Chinese/Taiwan-made 52mm screw-on Hood - I didn't know why I bought this. I just thought it would look cool on my 52mm primes. Found out that I don't need it also. Still it me.

5. A cheap version of the EL-EN3 charger (for Nikon Batteries) - I went to Barcelona as a sidetrip to my business trip. I found out when I was in Europe, I forgot my charger (and my battery and back-up battery is running low on power). I have to make an emergency purchase. I bought a charger for 10euros (700 pesos). It was overheating during charging. Still with me.

Here's my regret list:

1) Sigma 24-70 2.8 EX DG - slow to focus, filter size is huge (82mm), too bulky, and very soft at 2.8 to 4.

2) Canon kit lens (18-55mm) - after a couple of months it went back to the box, bubble wrapped. Next time I saw it was when I sold the entire kit about year after.

3) Whibal Cards - I want an Expodisc instead but it's so expensive (the Expodisc)

4) Tamrac belt - modules are loosely moving around when covering events. Went with the lowepro after some time.

5) Lowepro lens case 5 - thought it would be a good case for my 70-200 2.8 but it turns out this thing was designed for 300mm 2.8 or 400 f/4 lenses. It's been sitting in my closet for more than two years already.

6) Kodak gray cards - haven't used these cards due to the Whibal cards.

7) Sanyo 2500 mah rechargeable batteries - I got the defective ones but never tried to have them replaced. Drains after a day.

8) Generic PCMCIA CF card reader - my brother's dog can run faster than this thing reading CF cards. Excruciatingly slow.

Hi Folks! I saw this off a thread in dpreview, and I thought it would be great to have here, since it will help people give a bit more thought on where they spend their hard-earned money for photo stuff. What was the most useless photographic accessory that you bought and why?

For me, its the falcon eyes flash bracket. Once I understood how my Canon flashes really worked, I realized I didn't need it. It just made me think about the added weight than the event I was shooting. :)

yeah...will look for some. but that would be a waste of hosting space hehe. my flickr is non-pro. basta. i always removed it when im shooting at light sources. in the end i never screwed it back.

the lens i borrowed had this hoya UV filter. looks multicoated. never produced the same flares as that sunpak one.

Yup, it also made it impractical to use the cam with the grip on. I could hardly use the vertical shutter release because the flipping angle made it awkward to use. The base became bulkier too. I even tried disassembling the frame to see if I could adjust the flipping angle to no avail. Naging pabigat lang yung grip.

I love the extender! My nose used to get squashed against the LCD and I'd get oil marks all over. It's also easier to compose now with the extender so my view was pushed back.

The only drawback is that i've lost the flatness of the backside of the cam, so it's a challenge squeezing it into my compact walk-about bag. :)

I am not sure Migs. I just got it earlier this year. You're right though, I can't help but smile when it does that :) Bad trip
The defect might not affect tripod as much though since you don't normally move it from spot to spot that often like what you do with a monopod. Also, the weight is evenly distributed between the 3 legs.

but cant wait any longer to save more for 40D. so i ended up loosing some cash value upgrading to 40D.

Heehee, I had to dig into my dry cabinet and see if this was the same one I got without thinking. And yes, I got it for my kit lens with ultra-rotating front element :D

It's still usable though, although one has to focus lock first, then adjust the CPL. :D

haha i've had my fair share of wrong purchases.. actually my first DSLR "kit" purchase was a mistake. I've been naive that time and now I know more.

Let me tell you about my "Kit"

- D80 with 18-135 (nothing wrong with it)
- Toshiba class 4 SDHC 2GB (should've pushed for the sandisk extreme IV)
- 0.5x Wide Angle/macro adapter for the kit lens 67mm dia (yes it gives you 0.5x magnification but it is heavy, it vignettes, gives very noticeable CA, lowers the IQ, not worth the price the salesman gave me)
- the "steinheiser" bag (which I never used cuz it's fugly, but then the shoulder strap was wonderful and the dividers were nice so I repurposed them)
- as well as the "steinheiser" tripod (which can't even hold the camera to a fixed position)

after everything though.. karma does exist and got my 50mm 1.8 at a steal.. :D

I think that's "Steinzeiser" and seems to be a common brand to include in freebies for Singapore camera purchases. I've got a toploading SLR pouch with an EOS 33 I'm using now.

Sorry for the OT, back to your regular programming. :D

most of my stupidest purchases would be bags. when i bought my DSLR, I bought a bag costing 2,500 just to find out that it won't fit my stuff. Then, a week later, I had to buy a new bag worth 2K and realized that it was too big for my gear. Then bought a shoulder bag worth 3.7K even if I knew even before that I don't really like shoulder bags. Then, bought a really big bag worth around 6K that can fit a laptop and my gear (minus the 70-200) but rarely use it. Then, bought a belt pack and I never felt happier my entire life :)

I bought cheap UV filters for each of my lens only to find out that it is not advisable since it degrades image quality. I also bought a relatively cheap tripod. Should have bought Manfrottos instead.

to me, it still is the 350D. It was an impulsive buy. If i have to use the same amount now (pesos), I could buy a better camera, 2-3 more lenses. That's what i get for being an early adopter.
tripods are another thing. I regretted the CDRK suctioned gorilla-pod-like leg and the knock-off gorillapods (hey its cheap at P150). It really cant hold the DSLR so I re-used them insted for our webcams and my DV-Cam (for in-car driving use - for a possible "ROAD-cast vidcast))

For me its one of those Gorillapod (not sure if that was the name of the original) tripods that they sell in Cebu pacific flights to boracay. Cost me 500 pesos for the "pirated" version (because it had a cebu pacific logo on it) It was nice to look at becuase of the design, but really unusable for my P&S. Wow great thread.

1. I was new on photography so I bought first dslr d40x, then went to try lenses, bought a sigma 70-300 apo dg and did not AF on my cam....sold the lens, and then I saw bokeh shots here and bought a nikon 50mm 1.8, I know it doesnt AF and bought it anyway...gave me a terrible headache from manual focusing. I love the lens so i sold my d40x, and got myself a d80.

2. Camera bags: since I have a brand new dslr (d40x) before i want to protect it and bought myself a bag that can fit only a body and kit lens... sold it after 2 months, then bought one, a Lowepro imitation NIKON sling bag, I dont like it because its so thin and flimsy, so now I have a kata dr-467.

3. Extension tubes for macro: since I dont know anything about macro i bought a set of KET, after a month i realized why not buy a full manual ET instead because its cheaper, sold the KET and bought the other one, after a couple of months I bought another KET because its easier to operate and now im selling the manual ET.

4.Lenses: sold my kitlens 18-55 to try a telephoto, so i got myself an 18-135. after six months i sold my 50mm and and 18-135 to buy myself a sigma 18-50 2.8 Macro, since i dont have anything to use my KET I bought a used 18-55 again!...gulo no? hehe now I love my 18-55 with KET, very sharp than my 18-135. Now im selling my Sigma 18-50 Macro (because i thought its a true macro lens grrr!)

5. Flash shoe cover for P250.00, I should have let it stay naked.

There you have it!

B+W UV-Haze 1x MRC Filter... not genuine?

i bought another unit of this filter yesterday from another store coz the store where i use to buy is under renovation.

the problem is, i already knew that theres something wrong with the unit im planning to buy but i still made the purchase.

when i got home, found out that they are different even if it has the same part number and description.

so just this morning, i tried refunding it with the store i bought it and had an argument that their filter is not genuine. i managed to prove my self and had the refund. but thing is, i still made a stupid purchase.

I don't really regret the stuff I purchased, more like, the timing of it. Hahahah

I got my d80 a couple of months ago. I asked my mom to buy for me in the US, since it was a bit cheaper at that time there compared to here. I opted to buy there since my mom's friend was actually going back here in the Philippines so I can get the camera in a jiffy.

After a few weeks, I got the camera. I was really happy about it since I got quite cheap. A couple of weeks after that, recession in the US dropped the economy and lo and behold, blackl friday sales everywhere.

Should've waited a couple more weeks. Hahaha

Oh well, at least I'm happy with what I got, for now!

Another is a 950nm IR filter. I bought it without checking first how it would perform on my 7D. True enough, it turned out that it required very long exposures. Too long for me.

haha..nice thread.. :)

my stupidest cam gear purchases:

1) screw-in petal lens hood for my kit lens - bought it because i think it looks good on my lens but i can't take the vignetting specially as 18-20mm..after a few weeks sold my kit lens then the hood..

2) pop-up flash diffuser - didn't have the time to use it since i bought a speedlight a few days after..

3) cheap tripod (worth 700) - so excited to buy a tripod but didn't have a budget so i opted to by a cheap one at Hidalgo.. after a few weeks, the screw that prevents the head from moving left to right went loose.. so now i have an instant "specialized" panning tripod..hahah

4) my D3000 - an impulse buy, had a D40 before then when i knew that there was a mark down on its price at Hidalgo i immediately sold my D40 and bought one without reading its reviews.. though not so stupid purchase but felt sad that after buying it, i read Ken Rockwell's review and he said the it's Nikon's worst DSLR ever.. felt devastated knowing that D40 is better than D3000 at high ISOs and flash sync speed.. but now i really love my D3000and upgrade is not yet on my mind.. :)

my CDR king cheapo tripod. it was also an impulse buy since i was going to travel and don't have a tripod yet. got it for 1.2K. the receptacle was so darn small. placing my cam even with just the kit lens, the ball head was wobbly. stashed it away for good. my bro's 700php plasticky tripod was even better

I am using this on my kitlens... i love it, you'll get an instant UWA and a macro at the same time for the price of around 2K...
18mm will be 8.1mm and at 55mm=24.75mm.
cons: it's a bit heavy... that's why i'm only using it on my kitlens...

I also have this 2x tele-converter, don't buy it. this is the most stupidest cam gear i purchase... I also planned to use it on my 55-200mm, the effect? a very soft, dreamy effect photo, the quality is very poor.:)

Thanks for the feedback. I guess Il just get it na lang. Someone is selling it to me 1.7k packaged na. wide angle and 2x tele. I need the macro anyway. if it is really bad i can just sell it. (sana)

those stupid Energizer 2500mAh rechargeable batteries (the green ones) my fiancee bought from canada. she even made 'pakiusap' to her friend to send it to me through her package so that i can use it in my friend's wedding.

it turned out it didn't even lasted for at least 50 shots
all full charged and 50 shots?? are you sh*tting me?
kept it in my cabinet ever since..

yup the green one i have this one as well bought it at Best Buy in California, thinking my P&S cam was busted, it was the battery thats causing it

bought my 1st dslr a nikon d80 with 18-55 and 55-200vr combo then as i passed by a camera shop i saw the 18-135 lens and i thought, WOW! thats one huge lens and i look at my 18-55.. hmmm.. i bought the 18-135, only to find out after a week that its still a kit lens for the d300.. bought it for 12k.

none yet..

but i think the 35 1.8, i have let go 2 of these just because i want mid tele. but in the end, i always caught up buying it again since i long for tis usefulness and versatility. not realizing the money i've lost before selling it for a low-low price.

why not? does it affect image quality?

ANYTHING that obstructs the glass affects the image quality... I really don't see the benefit of UV filters either , lens hoods will give better protection.

Yes it does (It makes my lousy photos lousier! :D ) ...but some say it does not.

And I like the effect of glare on photos, it makes a ghostly creepy effect. :D

Some use the UV filter to protect their lens... if you're caught between stone-trowing riots. :D

The Filter Flare Factor:

Do you use a "protective filter" on your lens? I encourage you to take that filter off your lens and leave it off.

1. UV Filters
2. My 4th, 5th, 6th .... camera bag. (I think you only need 2-3)
3. The Nikon 70-200 VR for use on a DX body ( large, unwieldy, and expensive considering that it's a pretty boring focal length on APS-C, in my opinion) :p

UV filters indeed, specially Phottix and Sunpak, they are the worst!

dr.mark.dimalanta
10-23-2010, 08:55 AM
UV filters have a tendency to degrade the quality of your lens coatings to that of the UV filter. If you were to use one for any reason, the only justification would be for protection, because they do nothing to improve, and actually hurt the final image quality.

They are the number one selling trap, when buying a first time SLR. It's always funny to hear the sales pitch from slimy salesmen in NYC.

Use your hood for added protection.

For me, my most useless thing I had ever purchased was... cheaply made card readers, they fail soon after purchase.

1. I just cant see any effect on my images.

3. Just an add on's with my other filters(ND8 + CPL) when I practice Long Exposures yet you still need to zoom a bit to avoid Vignetting

a 10 meter long seamless blue background

it's not the paper kind but some sort of non-woven fiber
it creases like h@ll so easily. and since I don't have my own car
it gets folded up and I wind up with these huge lines going through it
what I wound up doing would be crumpling up the whole thing
before a shoot which got me a nice textured effect

It's got to be my macro reverse ring.

First of all the ring is too tight, setting it up is a pain. Second of which is that I don't do much macro photography. I can't even select a good aperture for my shots (you literally "flip over" your lens using rings) so I'm stuck at f/22 [probably] for my D40.

At some point I considered selling it for a dirt-cheap low price/giving it away but I just kept it in my bag so that I can have other options. :Dum:

Nikon D40 - I was once Blinded by Ken Rockwell's fanboyism, his Megapixels dont matter and Cameras dont matter philosophy got me into buying this camera body, a great cam for its price but the 6MP resolution and the 3pt. AF was the limiting factor and ended up selling it after only a few months with a semi-pristine 4,000 shutter clicks . I had the budget to buy a Canon 450D way back then...regrets regrets lol

18-200 VR - No comment :D

50mm 1.8 AF-D Nikkor - Too tight for crop body use and it doesn't perform well at wider apertures, so I asked myself, "what's the point of owning this lens if I can't use it wide open?"... I traded it for a camera bag :)

... i've got too many accessories and i think some of them are out of impulse. so for this year, i will try to listen to my friend when she tries to kick the sense in me.

i'm currently using a d3000. don't get me wrong - i do love the IQ of nikon, but what i regret is buying a dual lens package instead of looking into a d90 (which would not limit me in terms of lens choices since d3000 only auto-focuses on AF-S lens). right now, i'm still waiting if i would be given an old canon 30d... if so, this would help me determine what system i would really want to invest in (since eventually, i'd want photography to be my sideline). i should start being not impulsive this time. wish me luck :)
