Hi Guys,
Back from Tonga. Trip went great. lots of whales and some good photos. Nino will post them for me soon. I was wondering if anybody out there knows if the quality of your image is effected when using the raw compression . On my d2x a raw file is about 19mb and on raw compression its 9 to 10 mb. :Smoke: cheers

Welcome back Gutsy! :)

Don't worry when using compressed RAW on your D2X as there is no image quality degradation. :) What you loose in compression is actually recoverable DR which is useful in PP... e.g. Shadow and Highlight detail... But if you nailed your exposure, which I have no doubt you absolutely did :) ... You need not be troubled.

All the best...

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your kind comments. Whale swimming is a "must do before " adventure. You don't even have to know how to scuba dive, its all done on snorkel. You don't even have to use bulky strobes, but it is hard work. It takes many hours just trying to get close to the whales and once you do, its really up to the whale if it wants to hang around for you to take its picture. I was told to give myself 7 days for the shoot. i was only there for 4 and got lucky. The pic of the in your face whale shot was actually the last shot just before the whale hit me with its pectoral fin. there is no better feeling than getting bitch slapped by a 4 ton, 20 foot whale calf !!

Gutsy, these are amazingly awesome photos of whales! I wish I could try that too. That close-up photo is sooo nice! :) How big and heavy can an adult whale be? A whale calf that's 4 tons and 20 feet long? That's huge! I wonder how it feels if you get hit by an adult! :D

hi Louie,
Adults can get up to 45 feet and 40 to 45 tons. The females are actually bigger than males. It was the end of the mating and birthing season when I was there, thye females have been there for 4 months already with out eating. They had lost about 1/3 of their weight already. I can only imagine how big they are with their full weight on. I think getting hit by an adult could kill you easily.
